ATTENDEES: Alice and Marland Ernest, Patsy and Bob Phillips ,
Dottie and George McKinney, Helen Lightbody , Marge Crow,
Cheryl Jones , Betty Yarbrough, Althea Staks , Wadette Matthews
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Ernest at 7:00 P.M. Copies of KTB Update
were provided. Volunteer hours were turned in to Dottie McKinney.
Treasury Report by Patsy indicated payments made for stamps, stationery, pictures,
and $500 for "Waste in Place". Balance to date $3528.86. Plaque for Franchot Tone was
discussed and a motion was made by Bob Phillips, seconded by Marge Crow that we
proceed with the plaque purchase.
Carolyn Park was absent but Chairman Ernest provided an update on her activity.
She is coordinating our activities with Mary Ellen Shoop.
Marge Crow presented an updated scrapbook for review. New material was submitted,
newspaper clippings and coverage anegrogressing. The pictures that Marge forwarded
to those participating in the groundbreaking ceremony at Arbor Day were well received
and a letter in response was read from Ebby Halliday.
The "BEE" brochure which Marge has been working on, along with other committee members,
is progressing nicely. Prices for typesetting, copying and quantities needed were
's-- discussed. George McKinney suggested that if we provide him with the proposed printed
copy, he would attempt to arrange the typesetting. Marland Ernest made a motion that
we proceed with this brochure, it was seconded by Helen Lightbody, and approved by the
Committee. This brochure should be most useful in all areas.
Althea Staks mentioned she had responses from 7 youth groups to her program. Some
interest was shown in adopting Bear Creek Park and Westpark for their projects. She
had a contact from a Nursing Home for assistance in beautification in their area.
It was determined that this would be an excellent project for the youth groups.
Alice Ernest mentioned that the youth groups at First Baptist Church, Euless were
working on some projects that could be coordinated with our beautification efforts.
These projects would benefit both the youth and the citizens. Volunteer hours would
be kept on their activities.
Paper drives which are held monthly at Shady Brook Elementary are effective. : It was
discussed that this project could be utilized to the benefit of the "BEE” program.
Discussion indicated that some four states now have laws requiring that all paper,
aluminum cans and bottles must be recycled because the landfills are full and space
becoming less available to provide more landfills.
It would be desirable if we could provide an area for these items for pickup - similar
to the Shady Brook Elementary paper collection. Proceeds from this project could then
either be used by the "BEE" and its projects or for other worthy projects within the
City. Proceeds from this type of collection could be noteworthy.

Betty Yarbrough reported that the display made by Karen Kennedy in the Library was
one of the most interesting they have had in local activity. They have a sign/poster
also displaying the "BEE" activities. The Committee truly appreciated this effort by.
Karen.
Marland Ernest met with Captain Wilson of Euless' and other staff members regarding
the litter problem and enforcement thereof. He feels that progress is being made and
more progress is forthcoming. The brochure which we are printing will include some
current litter laws for the benefit of citizens. To date one (1) citation was given
for violation of litter laws.
Alice Ernest mentioned that George Zahn and his wife attended PTA meetings and
presented ribbons to those winners in the poster contest who did not get plaques.
He also presented a tree to Oakwood Terrace.
George McKinney was been active in three workshops during the past month. He mentioned
that Donna Hibbits was most appreciative of the contribution made by "BEE" toward the
purchase of additional "Waste in Place" books. The HEB School System will benefit.
The greatest achievement he is pleased to report is that the "Waste in Place" program
will be mandatory in the HEB School curriculum. Lets keep up the good work.
A workshop is scheduled for 3/25/87. Those who can attend are urged to do so. Their
will be other workshops for those who cannot attend this one. Much work needs to be
done prior to our entry date for Austin. We look forward to seeing you all at the
workshops and the next meeting 4/20/87.
Last but by no means least, we were pleased to hear from Cheryl Jones, Program Supervisor
on the Recreation Staff. Cheryl presented a copy of a display she will submit in the
next Activities Schedule. We were very impressed with the work she has done and
feel that with this in the schedule, we will achieve much more awareness among our
citizenry. We are proud of the cooperation we are getting from all departments within
the City and feel that the City will be rewarded in turn by the active participation of
of its citizens. We all stand to gain by these efforts. We also are appreciative of
the note on the Water Bill.
A reminder to all that the "SPARKLE WEEK" pickup by the City begins April 1, 1987
and continues through May 4, 1987. Please refer to the Mayor's newsletter for the
date of this pickup in your area.
Meeting was adjourned at 9: 30 PM.
