The meeting was called to order by Chairman Alice Ernest at 7:00 P.M. The first
order of business was the Volunteer Record Roll Call. Volunteer hours were sub-
mitted to George McKinney. Those who did not have them will see that Dottie
McKinney receives them. Please put down everything you did relating to our
program and record all hours. We need this information for our entry to Austin.
Minutes of the January, 1987 meeting were not approved since they were just received
prior to the meeting. They will be approved at the next meeting.
The "Bee" Committee was pleased that Gary Kennedy and Betty Yarbrough attended our
meeting as we hope they will become permanent committee members. Betty is currently
a member of the KTB, Inc. The active participation of both Gary and Betty is most
welcome.
Patsy Phillips reported that expenses for Arbor Day, film purchase and development,
quick copier and an "Adopt a Spot" Main street sign totalled $234.12. We now have
a balance of $4256.05. Cost for a new order of "Bee" stationery and envelopes was
submitted along with some supplies and stamps for mailing.
Helen Ligthtbody reported that she sent some 40 letters thanking individuals/groups
for their participation and assistance in making our Arbor Day 1987 Observance so
successful. We received letters from Mary Ellen Shoop and Willie Mae McCormick
commending us on the Arbor Day presentation, Helen presented a copy of the "Bee"
display she would like to see appear in our next Activities Issue. It was approved
for submission into the mail out by the Committee.
Betty Yarbrough mentioned she has an area in the Library which could display our
activities. It was recommended that we could use the same design for some posters.
Karen Kennedy volunteered to work on the display and poster design - display is
also an area needed for our entry to Austin.
Carolyn Park mentioned that a reporter from the Dallas Morning News spent much
time 2/7/87 talking to different individuals and pictures were taken. Copy of the
article was presented for recording in our scrapbook. A slide presentation which
was requested by Karen Kennedy will be presented to South Euless on March 12, 1987.
M Bank had a meeting of a new group which comprised of individuals from Hurst,
Euless and Bedford. Carolyn reported on the activities of the "Bee" committee to
this group. She also attended a meeting of the Trailwood Garden Club discussing
"Bee" activities and thanking them for their most generous participation in our
Arbor Day activities.
Bob Phillips reported that the beds were prepared for planting in the Main Street
project in front of the water well lot. Three trees (red oak) planted by the
Parks and Recreation Dept. , and some nursery stock plants will be planted. Dis-
cussion was held as to whether the Committee should do this as a group effort.
Because we need to move on with our entry program, the Committee decided to meet
`.. 2/21/87 at 10:00 A.M. (weather permitting) to plant the shrubs. Everyone that
could come would be appreciated. BRING YOUR OWN SHOVEL. Bob mentioned that he had
dead "We're Building a Beautiful Tomorrow"

not yet received the plants and equipment from the Highway Dept. for our Highway
10 project. Delivery was anticipated shortly. A juniper tree has been selected
to be placed in the City Hall area near the flagpole. It is approx. 20 feet tall
and of 10" caliber. He has City approval to move it and the cost to move, trim,
treat and replant the tree will be $750.00.
Some concern was shown that entry time is drawing close and we have much mt®re to
accomplish for the deadline. Clean up projects such as Highway 10, Texas Trash All,
Sparkle Week, Youth projects are programmed and we need to coordinate some of
these activities.
Marge Crow, historian, mentioned that she does not have sufficient pictures on the
litter lots. We need to document much of these activities for our entry. Litter
cleanup counts 30 points. The three lots selected on Main Street were cleaned up
periodically with a count made in three categories: fast food particles, cans and
bottles and other items. It appeared that while the count varied some, the pattern did
remain pretty similar and the litter problem will be a continuous effort. Marge
reminded the Committee that we need material on Law Enforcement and Recycling.
Karen Kennedy was unable to determine who specifically handles the newspaper bins
for recycling at different areas in the metroplex. After discussion, it was determined
that we leave a letterhead note in one of the collection areas requesting they
contact the "Bee". Since cleanup is our big point earner, we need pictures (properly
identified and labeled of these efforts. Marge is preparing the material in the
scrapbook in a temporary manner so that items can be moved or placed in more effective
areas for the official entry being sent to Austin. After the entry is completed,
the scrapbook will be compiled in a permanent manner. Some pictures she has that
are duplicates will be sent to those participating with a note from her thanking
them for their participation and hopefully they will retain the pictures for their
own use.
George McKinney attended a Joint meeting of Grapevine officials, City Manager,
City Staff, Chamber of Commerce executires, High School Superintendent and many
principals. The primary purpose of the meeting was to put together a total
package for the City of Grapevine for their entry into Beautification next year.
They are planning now for that effort. He also attended a meeting at the City of
Forney. This Groupe comprised of Chamber of Commerce, Businessmen and Newspaper
representatives who plan to use the same format that was used for their Winning
Beautification Entry and apply it toward other economic programs.
Carolyn Park visited with Donna Hibbitts, HEB School Administration and was pleased
to learn that the "Waste in Place" programisprogressing very nicely. The plans
for next year indicate much more participation within the school system, both within
"In-Service" training and classrooms. It will be used in the Science Program.
She would like the HEB School system to have copies of "WIP" for use by each grade.
The "Bee" initially purchased $465.00 worth of these books for the HEB School
System last year. It has paid off, but it is difficult ?grail classes to work from
one book. Discussion among the Committee noted that this program could only grow
and since we now have more awareness, it would be a worthwhile investment to
provide additional copies of the "WIP" text to the schools. Mr. Phillips made
a motion that we provide $500 for purchase of additional "WIP" books for the HEB
School System. The motion was seconded by Karen Kennedy. The motion was approved
unanimously.

Harrison Lane Elementary is doing a recycling program right now .
Newspapers are collected once a month and they make approximately
$500 per month. One fifth grade is collecting cans for recycling. Cans are
being collected by Aluminum Recycling in Richland Hills. Carolyn is going to
the schools next week with posters and ask that they coordinate their activities
with Sparkle Week of Euless. We will probably have another poster contest.
Bob and Patsy Phillips are segmentizing Main Street for our "ADOPt A SPOT"
program. 34 areas (spots) have been programmed on the project.
Some 2500 lbs. of letter were picked up at the "Main Street" cleanup by the
Committee. Discussion was held to place the "Adopt a Spot" on the Water Bill.
In new business we discussed awarding Franchot Thomas a plaque for his many
outstanding efforts toward our projects. His continuous conscientious work
was inspiring to us.
It was determined that we would have to meet perhaps more frequently than once
a month in order to accomplish all our efforts prior to the deadline for our
entry this spring.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:30 PM.
