HomeMy WebLinkAbout1986-09-15 • "We're Building a Beautiful Tomorrow" uLe MINUTES OF MEETING HELD SEPTEMBER 15, 1986 "BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY" COMMITTEE "BEE" The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm. Attendees were: Chairman Ernest, Patsy Phillips, Bob Phillips, Marland Ernest, Althea Staks, Carolyn Park, Karen Kennedy and Helen Lightbody. Chairman Ernest introduced Althea Staks and Marland Ernest as new members of the board. Marland will be working in the area of law enfor- cement. Karen Kennedy was introduced as a guest; she is interested in recycling. Volunteer Record reporting was discussed and committee members turned in the hours from the begining of our year to present. We propose to do this monthly and make reporting and recording less tedious. Patsy Phillips reported the treasurer's report giving the previous balance of $532.40 and the only additional expenditure being the purchase of the plaques for the "Yard of the Month" program. Alice Ernest reported that the "Yard of the Month" program is completed for this year. Letters were sent to all involved which told how the yards were judged. The evaluation via point system concentrated on lawn and foundation planting, color, maintenance and overall design. Carolyn Park reported that an update was sent to Ellen Shoop, KTB Inc. She and Alice Ernest presented a program acquainting the Trailwood Garden Club with the "BEE". 300 litter bags "Litter Feeds Fire" have been purchased for. the Fire Department to be distributed to public schools during Fire Prevention week. A meeting is scheduled with Donna Hibbets, Asst. Superintendent of Elementary Schools of HEB School District, with regard to their particip- ation in our Arbor Day Program. Alice and Carolyn Park met with State Forester. They reported that it was a good meeting. Bob Phillips reported that the Highway Department has promised new signs which are larger than originally placed. Discussion was held relative to picking up trash on a combined effort by volunteers at least twice during the year. Use of orange vests and trucks to pick up trash was mentioned. Utilizing the "Sparkle Week" project was also discussed. Discussion was held regarding all those that worked on the Highway 10 flower beds getting together to meet each other. It was determined to have a picnic (Bar-B-Q) at Kiddie Carr Park on September 27, 1986 at 6:00pm. Letters were sent to all participants of the Beautification Committtee. City officials, City Council and Parks and Recreation Board Members were also invited. 201 N. Ron Tipton has decided that due to his workload, he would not be able to work as much with the Committee but would assist those working in this area with the background he has acquired during the past year. The Beautification Committee has truly appreciated Ron's efforts. Carolyn Park reported that we will be needing someone to donate chairs to be placed in our new gym at our Arbor Day activities. Invit- ations will be mailed out statewide. Ebby Halliday, Chairman of Keep Texas Beautiful, Inc. this year will be one of the speakers. Alice Ernest and George McKinney met with our City Manager regarding funds to be allotted this year for the "BEE". The City Manager has promised that 55,000.00 will be allotted this year from the same fund as last year. Discussion was held that we establish a budget for the moneys so that each program committee will have some idea of what they can work with for their projects this year. We need some control that the funds will he channeled to the most needed areas. Discussion was held with the attempt to get an official "BEE" costume which would be used to promote our program during Arbor Day and other "BEE" functions. The decision was made by all members present to enter the Governor's Community Achievement Awards Program this year. We will be very busy try- ing to improve on entry of last year. Helen Lightbody presented to the Committee a program on matching funds which deals with the planting of wildflowers on highways, etc. Some research will be done in this area. Meeting was adjourned at 9:OOpm.
