HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-04-05 MARY LIB SALEH EULESS PUBLIC LIBRARY MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY BOARD THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2018 ITEM NO. 1 CALLED TO ORDER A regular meeting of the Mary Lib Saleh Euless Public Library Board was called to order by Chairman Snitz at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018, in the Conference Room of the Library, 201 N. Ector Drive. Those present included Chairman Barney Snitz,Vice Chairman Allan Gibbs, Board Member Jim Hamilton, and Alternates Leslie Kane and Magen Brown. Board Members Mike McGehee, Chris McAllister, and Carol Kveck were not present. STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT Sherry Knight, Library Administrator Mollie Snapp, Administrative Assistant VISITORS LuAnn Portugal ITEM NO. 2 APPROVED LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES Chairman Snitz asked for a motion to accept the minutes, with revisions, of the regular meeting held March 1, 2018. The motion was made by Alternate Kane and seconded by Board Member Hamilton. ITEM NO. 3 WELCOMED VISITORS Chairman Snitz welcomed all visitors present. ITEM NO. 4 PRESENTED LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT ❖ Classes and Events Update Library Administrator, Sherry Knight, summarized the accommodations being made to the library in anticipation of the transition to the temporary location. Ms. Knight also gave an overview of upcoming events taking place within the next few weeks including: "National Library Week," "ELF Book Sale," "League of Women Voters Candidate Forum," and "Harry Potter Party" and also followed up on the outcomes of the "Seuss Much Fun" event, which occurred on Saturday, March 3, and on the ongoing program: "DIY Stations." Ms. Knight proceeded to discuss the upcoming summer reading program,in collaboration with HEB Reads! and introduced the"Merge Cube;"a favor that patrons will receive when they sign up for the summer reading challenge. The inaugural summer reading event, "HEB Reads! Kickoff," will be held on May 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will introduce the "Think Tank;" a STEM-based mobile learning center that will be utilized by HEB ISD, Euless Public Library, Hurst Public Library, and Bedford Public Library. Library Board Minutes,April 5,2018,Page 1 of 3 Library Board Minutes,April 5,2018,Page 2 of 3 ❖ Remodel Update Ms. Knight reviewed the preparations that the library is making in anticipation of the transition to the temporary location at 1100 Westpark Way and the corresponding improvements being made there. The library is proposing the purchase of a book locker,which will remain on the city campus at 201 N Ector Drive in consideration of residents' convenience. Board Member Hamilton asked about the volume that the book locker could hold. Ms. Knight replied that there would be 17 locker slots in total and that it would be completely self-service and easy to use. Board Member Hamilton inquired about security measures in consideration to the book locker and Ms. Knight divulged that the locker itself was very secure. ITEM NO. 5 REPORTS Library Board Chairman Chairman Snitz gave an overview of events happening at other city departments. Chairman Snitz inquired about the current size of the collection and weeding. Ms. Knight reported that the library continues to weed items as part of regular library operations; however, the collection will not shrink significantly between now and the move. The collection has been compacted onto as few shelves as possible; therefore, shelving is readily available to relocate to the temporary location. Board Member Hamilton inquired about the location of future board meetings and Ms. Knight clarified that they would be held at the temporary location at 1100 Westpark Way. Chairman Snitz inquired about the quantity of parking spaces available at the temporary location to which Ms. Knight stated that staff would be parking offsite, thereby offering maximal space to our patrons. Library Board Vice-Chairman Vice Chairman Gibbs thanked those in the board who have made contributions to the Bubble Wall fundraiser and vocalized an invitation for all to participate in the fundraising. Vice Chairman Gibbs encouraged everyone to attend the concluding ELF Book Sale. Vice Chairman Gibbs described his experience at the Texas Library Association (TLA) Conference and mentioned a potential vendor that could be a source of income for the Euless Library Foundation by buying donated and weeded books and turning them into art at letterlounge.net. Vice Chairman Gibbs also looked at furniture and acquired a few program ideas. Ms. Knight and Administrative Assistant, Mollie Snapp, spoke of their experience at the TLA Conference, as well. Library Board Minutes,April 5,2018,Page 3 of 3 Library Board Members Alternate Brown shared her review of the"Seuss Much Fun"event and shared her appreciation of the self-expressing crafts and the DIY Stations available to her son. Alternate Kane gave an update on the success of the Lonestar Planner Club program and noted that attendance is rising. ITEM NO. 6 PUBLIC COMMENTS LuAnn Portugal of Euless,Texas inquired about the ability to reinvest the current materials budget for the return to the current location in 2020. Ms. Knight stated that the library's material budget is sufficient to meet community needs and should continue to be for the foreseeable future. Ms. Portugal advocated her desire to make sure that children are continuing to be passionate readers,as they have been in the past. Ms.Knight confirmed that circulation is still high and steady in the youth and young adult categories and that the library is still providing patrons with the written format, as well as other available formats and mediums. Ms. Portugal invited all board members to come and listen to the Euless city council candidates speak at the League of Women Voters Candidate Forum taking place at the library on April 18. ITEM NO. 7 ADJOURNMENT Chairman Snitz asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Board Member Hamilton and seconded by Alternate Kane.
