This "summer learning loss" is equal to a month's loss in overall knowledge and two month's loss in reading skills. Fortunately, our wonderful city provides many free or affordable activities that are designed to keep kids engaged and to help counteract this learning loss. For mental stimulation, the HEB Reads! challenge encourages children to read books over the summer. The Simmons Center and the Euless Library have interactive presentations in June and July that touch on astronomy, birds of prey, science experiments and more. There are even fun week-long summer camps at the rec center. For physical fitness, your children can participate in organized team sports, swimming lessons, dance lessons, martial arts classes or even the ice skating academy. Ector Dr. All HEB residents are invited to attend the Texas Nature Trackers (TNT) presentation to learn about TNT and its role in the Texas Parks and Wildlife's research and conservation efforts. As part of the Wildlife Diversity Program, TNT tracks the status of wild populations of plants and animals throughout the state. Dr. Tania Homayoun will introduce the TNT program and explain how TNT uses the iNaturalist mobile app to support the Wildlife Diversity Program's conservation work on Texas Species of Greatest Conservation Need. She'll discuss TNT projects and data needs, as well as how this framework enables iNaturalist users and bioblitz (living species recording event) participants to be active partners in conservation. About the Speaker: Dr. Tania Homayoun is a Texas Nature Trackers Biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife. Through TNT, she engages naturalists of all interests and ability levels in collecting citizen science and crowd-sourced data on Texas' unique flora and fauna with a particular focus on species of greatest conservation need. Previously, Tania worked for Audubon Texas, with the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center and later the Conservation Science Team as its Urban Conservation Program Manager where she worked to develop and deliver conservation plans, educational programs/trainings, and activities supporting biodiversity and sustainable communities. Tania holds bachelors degrees in Ecology/Evolution/Conservation Biology and Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin and a PhD in Conservation Biology from the University of Minnesota, where she studied the impacts of urbanization on landbird communities. She is an avid birder and always has room for one more native plant in her patio garden. The event is free, but you must register to attend. The tot area features a zero-depth entry pool with a tot playground. There is also a lazy river where inner tubes are provided. The main pool features two flume slides and one run out slide as well as a lily-pad walk (48" height requirement). The facility also includes a bathhouse, concession area, deck space, picnic tables, lounge chairs, shaded areas and plenty of parking.
