HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-09-10 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 10, 2018 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson, Mavy Wright,called the meeting to order at 10:01 a.m.The meeting was held at the Euless City Hall, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown,Al Browning, Bill Byers,Joe Cannon,Weldon Cannon, Gary Fieldsend, Norma Lively, Don Martin,Anniece McKanna, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Linda Pool, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver, Helen Voss,Any Weinzapfel and Mavy Wright. STAFF PRESENT Director of Parks and Community Services, Ray McDonald, Recreation Manager Frank Ocampo and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale. VISITORS PRESENT Mary Francis Hunt (Weldon Cannon and Joe Cannons' cousin) APPROVAL OF MINUTES Andy Weinzapfel made a correction to the minutes. On page 3,item #2c, it should say, "Andy Weinzapfel is still working with Pikes Peak on culturally modified trees." and not"on Yate Trees." Peggy Vandiver made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction. Andy Weinzapfel seconded the motion. All were in favor, minutes approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $11,061.30. There was a bill for$19.82 and several deposits in the amounts of$10 (money jar), $23 (Moneybox),$35 (White County Historical Society) and $100 (Arnett family member) totaling$168. Doris Brown made a motion to ratify the spending by Gary Parker and pay his bill of$19.82. Helen Voss seconded the motion.All were in favor,motion carried. The current balance on September 10, 2018 is $11,209.30. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docents and Volunteer Report/Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. There were 12 docents and eight visitors at the September open house. b. A group of 10 to 20 people from Denton will be touring the facility on Monday, November 5, 2018. c. Handed out the docent sign-up sheet for Saturday, October 13, 2018 open house. H PC MTG 100818 Page 1 of 3 d. Linda Pool mentioned that there was a shortage of staff to cover all the areas at the Christmas open house last year. She encouraged all the members to sign up to serve as docents. 2. Acquisition—Weldon Cannon donated two items to the museum: a. Old Western Hills Inn keys he purchased online. b. A Bird's Fort Bicentennial Medal. c. He filled out and submitted a donation form for the items he donated. 3. Facebook—no report 4. Plaque—no report S. Display Signs—no report 6. Publicity/Program/Speakers—Mavy Wright a. Quanah Parker's great-great-grandson, Lance Tahmahkera will give a presentation during open house on Saturday, October 13, 2018. • Will meet with staff to test the speaker and mic for the event. • Staff to provide chairs and help with set-up. • Staff will be onsite to reserve and block off parking. • The Greek Food Festival will be on the same date. Staff will contact the Greek Church to remind them of our parking needs. • Will submit a request for$50 donation to Mr. Tahmahkera. • Discussed donating an additional $100 to Mr. Tahmahkera's charity of choice as was done in the past.After a brief discussion, Faye Stinneford made a motion to donate another$100 to Mr. Tahmahkera's charity of choice in addition to the $50 to Mr. Tahmahkera.Al Browning seconded the motion.All were in favor. Motion approved. • Joe Cannon made a motion to take the donations out of the committee's funds. Helen Voss seconded the motion.All were in favor, motion approved. 7. Historical Albums—Work on the albums are ongoing and consistent,though progress is slow. 8. Heritage Park—no report 9. Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel discussed possibly metal detecting the Mosier Valley Cemetery. He also discussed a possible tour of the cemetery.After a brief discussion, majority of the members were agreeable to going on a tour after the October regular meeting. Gary Parker made a motion to schedule a tour for the committee to visit the cemetery. Helen Voss seconded the motion.All were in favor, motion approved. Mavy Wright will schedule the tour. The City will provide a bus to take the committee to the location. 10. Inventory—no report 11. Historical Tree Program—no report CHAIRMAN'S REPORT HPC MTG 100818 Page 2 of 3 1. Will contact Barbara Collier to remove the Constitution display before the October regular meeting. 2. Reminded the committee of the 9/11 Memorial service to be held the next day, Tuesday, September 11 at 9 a.m. COMMITTEE REPORT 1. Weldon Cannon and Andy Weinzapfel discuss information about Veda Johnson. She was the first black teacher in the HEB-ISD; she was a member of Euless Historical Preservation Committee and a descendant of the Lee and/or Mosier family. Gary Parker discussed contacting the Fort Worth Historical Society for information about Bob Ray Sanders' daughter regarding Mosier Valley. 2. Weldon Cannon reported the following: a. Made a decision to donate his manuscripts and research documents, etc. to the University of Arlington. He wants his materials to be in a safe, secure facility and accessible for global research. b. Will donate copies of some materials to the city. c. Inquired about various copies of historical research papers he gave to different staff members over the years. d. Indicated that he repeatedly asked for more security over the years for the Museum or Euless Library. 3. Members expressed concern about possible fire at Heritage Park and if there is a fire prevention plan in place. Staff will review the fire prevention plans and report to the committee. 4. Gary Parker indicated potential issues with the fence line along the north end of the parking lot between the new housing addition and museum. He said there is a dangerous drop off at the end of the grassy area. Staff will look into the concern. STAFF REPORT 1. "No Smoking" signs were installed at Heritage Park. 2. Aware of the structural damage inside the Fuller House. Engineers are scheduled to check the house and make sure it is structurally sound for use.Action to fix the issue will occur once engineers meets with staff. 3. Discussed quotes for additional cabinets, previously requested by the committee. Sunshine Cabinet off Highway 820 quoted $900 per cabinet in the past. Staff will contact them for more information. ADJOURNMENT Al Browning made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Gary Parker seconded the motion. Motion carried.
