HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-08-06 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board August 6, 2018 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 6:58 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018 in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Randy Jones. Other Board Members present: John Raab, Steve Doty, Jason Reyes, and Mohib Nawab. Members absent: Roger Sickler. Staff members present: Parks Manager Terry Boaz, Recreation Manager Frank Ocampo and Administrative Secretary Jordan Peterson. Visitors present: None. INVOCATION Mr. Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Jones asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the May 7, 2018 regular meeting. Mr. Reyes made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Mr. Raab. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Jason Reyes—South Euless & Heritage: No items to report. e. Mohib Nawab— Bob Eden &Trailwood: No items to report. f. Randy Jones— Parks at Texas Star: No items to report. g. Volunteer of the Quarter Chairman Jones announced that the volunteer of the quarter was Cub Scout Pack 387. This pack has volunteered with the city for several years and for numerous events over those years. Each time we reach out, they never hesitate to sign up and help out wherever they can. This year they assisted in handing out free trees at our Arbor Daze event, which is always done with such a positive and friendly demeanor. Due to their consistent dedication to the city of Euless we are happy to award them volunteer of the quarter. They were not present for the meeting, the plaque will be delivered to them. III. Beautification Award a. Chairman Jones announced the July 2018 Residential Yard of the Month winner is Mr. John and Joyce Wallace at 1812 Kynette Drive. This yard offers many different species of plant material such as Boxwoods, Turks Cap, Holly Bushes, Texas Sage and a large Tilapia tree to add shade to the landscape. With the hot summer days, this lawn is always well maintained and trimmed. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace will have their plaque delivered to them. b. Chairman Jones announced the July 2018 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification award winner goes to Lazy Dog Restaurant at 2521 State Highway 121. Lazy Dog takes pride in their landscape and it shows. The different species planted are Vitex, Knockout Roses, Burford Holly, and Mexican Feather. There is assorted rocks to add variation throughout. Lazy Dog was not able to attend the meeting, their plaque will be delivered to them. C. Chairman Jones announced the August 2018 Residential Beautification award winner goes to Duane and Yong Jahn at 100 Yellow Rose Trail. This landscape was created with the hot summer temperatures in mind. The drought resistant plants that beautify this yard are Red Yuccas, Knockout Roses, Juniper, Loropetalum and Moss Ross to name a few. The Jahn's were not able to attend the meeting, their plaque will be delivered to them. d. Chairman Jones announced the August 2018 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification award winner goes to Legacy Bank Texas at 3040 State Highway 121. This business maintains a trash and weed free property. In addition, they have many different plant species to add color. They include, Pitto Sporum, Giant Liriope, Burford Holly, and Knockout Roses. Legacy Bank was not able to attend the meeting, their plaque will be delivered to them. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Jason Reyes reported the following for June: a. Total man hours for June 1-30 = 582 • 321.00 Horticulture • 189.00 Forestry • 72.00 Greenhouse • 0.00 Special Projects • 0.00 Training Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 r Trimmed trees behind resident's homes at golf course. Trimmed trees around Bob Eden tennis courts. Y Raised trees at Trailwood Park. i- Raised trees on McCormick Median and Blessing Branch Park. Worked with HEB Summer Youth Work Program at Pauline St. greenhouse. Tree Board Chairman Jason Reyes reported the following for July: a. Total man hours for July 1-31 = 818 • 293.00 Horticulture • 256.00 Forestry • 60.00 Greenhouse • 129.00 Special Projects • 24.00 Training Trimmed trees behind resident's homes at golf course. ➢ Trimmed trees around Bob Eden tennis courts. ➢ Raised trees at Trailwood Park. Y Raised trees on McCormick Median and Blessing Branch Park. Worked with HEB Summer Youth Work Program at Pauline St. greenhouse. V. Staff Report— Frank Ocampo a. Summer camp overview. Enrollment total was 1,738 participants. b. Aquatic Park attendance and revenue remain steady as compared to previous years. c. Wilshire pool attendance and revenue has decreased since last year. VI. Directors Report— Ray McDonald a. Library temporary location landscape work done by Parks. b. Wilshire pond algae treatment was successful. c. Villages of Bear Creek bridge replacement. d. John Douthit, Athletic Supervisor retired. e. Overview of council budget work session and projects in PACS department approved. VI1. Other New Business No new business. VIII.
