HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-10-04TEEN COURT ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES MEETING OF OCTOBER 4, 2018 STATE OF TEXAS § COUNTY OF TARRANT § CITY OF BEDFORD § The Teen Court Advisory Board of the cities of Hurst, Euless and Bedford, Texas met at 6:00 p.m. at Bedford City Hall on the 4th day of October 2018, with the following members present: HURST: Lorrie Dickerson, Brandon Herrera EULESS: Robin Edwards, Renu Sloan BEDFORD: Kelley Hall TEEN REPRESENTATIVES: Hurst Council Liaison — Cathy Thompson Bedford Council Liaison — Dan Cogan Euless Council Liaison — Eddie Price HEB Teen Court Coordinator — Mindy Eichorst HEB Teen Court Assistant — Also present: Hurst City Secretary — Rita Frick Euless Staff Liaison — Bedford Court Manager — Hurst Court Manager — HEB Teen Court Teen Liaison. Bedford Administrative Services Director - CALL TO ORDER Vice Chairperson Lorrie Dickerson called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. with a quorum of five Board Members present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Consider approval of the following Teen Court Advisory Board minutes: a) June 7, 2018 Regular Meeting Renu Sloan made a motion to approve the June 7, 2018 regular meeting minutes and Robin Edwards seconded the motion and all were in favor. 2. Introductions There were several new people at this meeting. City of Hurst Advisory Board Member Brandon Herrera was present. City of Hurst Councilmember Cathy Thompson and City of Bedford Councilmember Dan Cogan were also present. OLD BUSINESS 3. Discuss the 2018 annual Teen Court Scholarship Gala. Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst explained since there were not that many Advisory Board Members at the June meeting she wanted to wrap up the 2018 Gala at this meeting. Ms. Eichorst handed out a sheet that had updated expenses and deposits from the Gala. Ms. Eichorst congratulated all of the Board Members for their hard work on getting sponsors, donations, and people to attend the Gala. There was a total of over $4,000 that was raised at the Gala. Ms. Eichorst advised this was the first year a seating chart was needed due to the amount of sponsors and attendees. Ms. Eichorst advised the Board Members that Teen Court has not received any college contact information from one of the Teen Recipients so the scholarship monies have not been disbursed. NEW BUSINESS 4. Discuss and possibly take action on dates for the 2019 Teen Court Scholarship Gala. Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst advised the Board Members that after the last Advisory Board Meeting she had contacted the Hurst Conference Center and checked on the dates that the Board Members had chosen. Ms. Eichorst mentioned the only date available was Thursday, April 18, 2019, so she reserved it. Approximately two weeks prior to this Advisory Meeting, Hurst Conference Center reached out to see about possibly changing the date of the Gala, due to a scheduling conflict. They provided other dates to choose. Ms. Eichorst provided other venues in case those dates were not going to work. She reached out to thV Bedford Public Library and they had the Board Members' first choice date of April 11, 2019 available. They would not charge for the venue, but the Advisory Board Members would need set up and take down tables and chairs at the beginning and end of the event. She also reached out to the Texas Star Conference Centre in Euless. They had April 11, 2019 available too and were willing to accommodate a third banquet room for the silent auction. After much discussion, Kelley Hall made a motion to move forward with reserving the April 11, 2019 date at the Texas Star Conference Centre and Robin Edwards seconded the motion. All were in favor. Ms. Eichorst mentioned she would talk with All for G0000000d and check availability on April 11, 2019. She also mentioned that if anyone knows of anyone local that might want to speak at the Gala to bring their ideas to the next Advisory Board Meeting, 5. Discuss and possibly take action on the Scholarship Application form. Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst provided a copy of the Teen Court Scholarship Application to the Advisory Board Members. She mentioned that it had not been revised for a long time and there were opportunities to improve the application. There were a few things that have changed over the years such as the GPA scale, consideration of homeschooled students, word count on essay, and reason for scholarship. City of Euless Councilmember Eddie Price mentioned the quality of the submission and the amount of hours spent volunteering needed to be considered. Each of the Board members took a current application home to review it and bring back some revisions to discuss at the next Advisory Board Meeting. 6. Discuss and possibly take action about the Adult Volunteers and Years of Service. Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst mentioned that there were four adult volunteers that have been volunteering for over 10 years with HEB Teen Court. In 2019, two will have volunteered for 25 years, one will have volunteered for 14 years, and one will have volunteered for 11 years. Ms. Eichorst suggested that they be honored at the 2019 Gala. Councilman Price suggested they also be honored at a City Council Meeting in whichever city they live in. All Advisory Board Members were in favor of honoring them at the 2019 Gala and at their residing cities. 7. Discuss and possibly take action on a date for the next Teen Court Advisory Board meeting. The next Advisory Board meeting will be on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at Bedford City Hall. REPORTS Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst went over the Coordinator's Report for the months of June, July, August and September 2018 and provided the Finance Report. ADJOURNMENT Kelley Hall entered a motion for the meeting to be adjourned. Lorrie Dickerson seconded the motion and all vpted in favor.
