HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-10-04 MARY LIB SALEH EULESS PUBLIC LIBRARY MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY BOARD THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2018 ITEM NO. 1 CALLED TO ORDER A regular meeting of the Euless Public Library Board was called to order by Chairman Snitz at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 4, 2018, in the Conference Room of the Euless Public Library, 1100 Westpark Way. Those present included Chairman Barney Snitz, Vice Chairman Allan Gibbs, Board Members Carol Kveck, Mike McGehee, Jim Hamilton, Chris McAllister, and Alternate Magen Brown. Alternate Leslie Kane was not present. Chairman Snitz confirmed that a quorum was present. STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT Angela Jones, Senior Librarian, Youth Services Mollie Snapp, Administrative Assistant VISITORS LuAnn Portugal ITEM NO. 2 APPROVED LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES Chairman Snitz asked for a motion to accept the minutes of the regular meeting held September 6, 2018. The motion was made by Board Member Hamilton and seconded by Board Member Kveck. ITEM NO. 3 WELCOMED VISITORS Chairman Snitz welcomed all visitors present. ITEM NO. 4 PRESENTED LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT ❖ Temporary Relocation and Remodel Update Senior Librarian Angela Jones gave an update on operations since the opening at Westpark on September 17 with patron numbers,use of the library,the addition of the book locker,and available book drops. ❖ Classes and Events Update Ms. Jones gave an overview of the children's programs and classes being held at the Simmons Center at 508 Simmons Dr., and explained how the library is building connections within the community to aid children in preparation for entering school. Library Board Minutes, October 4, 2018, Page I of 3 Library Board Minutes, October 4, 2018, Page 2 of 3 ITEM NO. 5 REPORTS Library Board Chairman Chairman Snitz listed the events going on in the city on October 6 including the Fire Open House and Junior Anglers Fishing Event in which the library will be participating. Chairman Snitz inquired about the library's involvement at Trunk or Treat and Ms. Jones assured him that library staff would be present. Chairman Snitz inquired about the STEM Kits and Ms. Jones explained that they were science, technology, engineering, and math related kits including a reading material,manipulative, activity, and links to additional resources online. Library Board Vice Chairman Vice Chairman Gibbs inquired about the parking spot reserved for the 40-year employee in the parking lot at the library and Administrative Assistant Mollie Snapp informed the board of the employee and her history with the Euless Public Library. Vice Chairman Gibbs inquired about the status of the after school traffic at Westpark and Ector and Ms. Jones explained that the students seemed to have found other after school activities. Library Board Members Board Member Kveck spoke of the success of the children's programs at the Simmons Center. Board Member McGehee spoke of a recent trip made to Minnesota and inquired about the items in the Annex. Ms. Jones discussed how simple it was to retrieve items out of the annex. Board Member Hamilton complimented the new, slimmer, DVD cases and informed everyone of another event, taking place on October 6: "Junk in the Trunk." Board Member McAllister inquired about a replacement for the language program that was removed from the TexShare databases and Ms. Jones suggested that DuoLingo was an excellent, free substitute. Alternate Brown stated that she enjoyed the back-to-back programs at the Simmons Center. Ms. Jones stated that she has also received feedback that parents enjoy spending more time in one place. ITEM NO. 6 PUBLIC COMMENTS LuAnn Portugal stated that she was excited to see that the library was keeping up with the latest releases during the relocation and commended staff for continuing to keep business moving as normal. Ms. Portugal inquired about the staff parking and Ms. Jones stated that staff was shuttled to and from the parking lot during the day and night shifts. Library Board Minutes, October 4, 2018,Page 3 of 3 Ms. Portugal inquired about the status of the new hours and Ms. Jones stated that the library has only received positive feedback from patrons. LuAnn updated the Board on the latest developments around the City. ITEM NO. 7 ADJOURNMENT Chairman Snitz asked for a motion to adjourn.
