HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-03-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes March 14, 2011 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Betty Fuller, Barbara Collier, Beth Gathings, Bill Byers, Bill Golden, David Massey, Don Martin, Donna Mickan, Doris Brown, Doyle Brown, Faye Stinneford, Gary Parker, Glenn Walker, Helen Payton, Iris Elliott, James Gathings, Leah Bennett, Mavy Wright, Perry Brockmeyer, Robert Nail, Shirley Mercer, Veva Lou Massey, Weldon Cannon and Norma Lively. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg Council Member Linda Martin STAFF PRESENT Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES Don Martin made a motion to approve the minutes. Mavy Wright seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported a beginning balance of$6,437.24. $45 was spent on engravings and $39.65 was from the donation jar. The current balance is $6,431.89. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. The following people volunteered to docent during open house on Saturday, March 12, 2011: Faye Stinneford (1-3 p.m.), David Massey (3-5 p.m.), Leah Bennett (1-3 p.m.), Joe Cannon (3-5 p.m.), Donna Mickan (1-3 p.m.), Bill Byers (3-5 p.m.), and Beth Gathings (3-5 p.m.) 2. The following people volunteered to docent during open house on Saturday, April 9, 2011: Helen Voss (1-3 p.m.), Barbara Collier (1-3 p.m.), Iris Elliott (1-5 p.m.), Doris Brown (1-5 p.m.) and David Massey (1-3 p.m.). Jan Bellamy also volunteered to docent from 3-5 p.m. 3. The City's senior program will be touring Heritage Park on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. The following people volunteered to docent: Betty Fuller and Leah Bennett. Jan Bellamy also volunteered to help docent. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS HPC MTG 031411 Page 1 1. Fuller House & Himes Log House Displays: Mavy Wright will not do new labels until the Ruth Millican museum is set up. 2. McCormick Barn Displays: Bill Byers hasn't had new displays to work on. 3. Library Displays: Betty Fuller indicated that the Committee's artifacts will need to be removed from the Library display cases to make room for the completed history wall tiles. 4. Website/Library Photo Display: James Gathings will be helping Gary Fieldsend with the Flickr account. They have not met regarding the project. 5. Evolving History Project: Doris Brown reported that Helen Payton gave her newspaper articles for the project. Mrs. Fuller indicated that she's already scanned some of the articles and they are in the photo albums at Fuller House. 6. Photo Album Sub-committee: Several people worked on the photo albums during open house. 7. Ruth Millican Center: Helen Voss and Betty Fuller visited the White Settlement museum. Mrs. Voss and Mrs. Fuller have a lot of ideas for the Fuller House and Ruth Millican displays. Several ideas were discussed about where to acquire inexpensive display cases. Council Member Linda Martin mentioned a website called freecycle.com as a possible source. Mrs. Fuller discussed the idea of having display cases on rollers. The possibility of drawing up a master plan for the building was discussed by some members. 8. Plaque Sub-committee: No new names have been added to the plaque. 9. Local Marker Sub-Committee: Robert Nail indicated he hasn't made up his mind about the previously discussed Fuller House local marker application. 10. McCormick Barn/Outdoor Update: Bill Byers will talk with Ray McDonald about the barn door. 11. Himes Log House: Betty Fuller inquired as to who donated the trunk inside the Log House? Bill Byers indicated that Gene Whitener donated the item. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported and/or discussed the following: • The Committee will be touring the Coptic Church after today's meeting. • Open house flyers were distributed to the members in case anyone knew of businesses where the flyers can be posted. • Reported that over eighty "lost" graves were recently located with David Allen's help and the use of a ground penetrating radar. Nineteen graves have been identified and sixty-six remain unknown. A map identifying the newly found graves was on display. Stones will be used to mark the unknown graves. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported that everything at Heritage is well insured. 2. Reported that the DFW Writers Club has been moved to the Simmons Center. HPC MTG 031411 Page 2 3. Asked if docents could survey open house visitors to find out how they heard about Heritage Park, whether from T.V., Euless Today, signs, etc. OTHER REPORTS 1. Don Martin noted that the well on Simmons Drive is being fixed. The owners seem to be paying for the work themselves. 2. It was reported that the Texas State Historical Commission is being considered for cuts due to State budgetary reasons. Several key members expressed their concerns about this possibility. ADJOURNMENT Faye Stinneford made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Doris Brown seconded the motion. Motion approved. The members proceeded to the St. Abanoub Coptic Church for a tour.
