HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-02-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes February 14, 2011 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Bill Golden, called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, TX. MEMBERS PRESENT Betty Fuller, Leah Bennett, Perry Brockmeyer, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Beth Gathings, James Gathings, Helen Gleghorn, Norma Lively, David Massey, Donna Mickan, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss and Mavy Wright. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg James Cannon STAFF PRESENT Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator Ray McDonald, Director of Parks & Community Services APPROVAL OF MINUTES Donna Mickan made a motion to approve the minutes. Helen Voss seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Barbara Collier, reported a beginning balance of 56,415.34. There was a total deposit of S21.90 from the donation jar. The current balance is 56,437.24. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT L Meadow Creek Elementary school had one-hundred and fifty four people who toured the facility on January 26, 2011. 2. Open house on Saturday, February 12, 2011 had twenty-eight visitors. 3. The following people volunteered to docent during open house on Saturday, March 12, 2011: Faye Stinneford (1-3 p.m.), David Massey (3-5 p.m.), Leah Bennett (1-1 p.m.), Joe Cannon (3-5 p m ), Donna Mickan ( 1-3 p.m.), Bill Byers (3-5 p.m.), and Beth Gathings (3-5 p.m.) STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1 . Calloway Cemetery: Bill Byers thanked Ray McDonald and his staff for doing an excellent job maintaining the cemetery. He further reported that the sign is still being worked on. HPC MTG 021411 Page 1 • 2. Plaque Sub-committee—Faye Stinneford had Betty Fuller and Bill Golden's names added to the chairman plaque. A couple more people were also added to the honorary plaque. 3. Ruth Millican Center: Helen Voss spoke with Gary McKamie regarding the acquisition of the Ruth Millican Center. She indicated that the City was not aware that the Committee wanted the City to purchase display cabinets, etc. Mrs. Voss and a few others will tour a museum in White Settlement for decoration ideas for the Fuller House. Bill Byers mentioned the idea of having an area dedicated to the military. The members were agreeable to the idea. 4. Acquisition Sub-committee: A discussion was held regarding acquisition of furniture for the Fuller House. Some members discussed acquiring early photos from inside the Fuller House for ideas about the furnishings it used to have. Robert Nail will see if Mrs. Nail has photos of the inside. 5. Historical Marker Sub-committee: Michael Davenport will be working on a marker for Robert Nail. Mr. Nail will mail in his application soon. It was discussed that Helen Porter's house is the oldest house in Euless and could be eligible for a local marker. 6. Historical Wall: Betty Fuller indicated that as the completed tiles come in, the Committee's artifacts in the display cases at the Library will need to be removed to make room for the finished tiles. 7. McCormick Barn Door: Bill Byers will talk to Ray McDonald about installing the barn door. Old photographs of the barn showed it had a door. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Bill Golden reported and/or discussed the following: • Susan Ellis, Don Martin and Weldon Cannon could not attend today's meeting due to various engagements. • Will check with the Porter's to see if they have photo's from inside the Western Hills Inn. • The Calloway Cemetery Sub-committee was brought up for discussion. It was discussed that it has met its purpose and should it be eliminated. Robert Nail made a motion to eliminate the committee, no one opposed. Motion was approved. • The Committee will take a tour of the Coptic Church on South Main Street after the March meeting. • Brought up for consideration the idea of instituting a Dobkins Cemetery Sub-Committee. Dobkins Cemetery is privately owned and no one really takes care of it. It has about twelve graves. The members will consider the suggestion and discuss it at the next meeting. • Displayed a sign that he placed at different businesses around Euless advertising Heritage Park. The Committee liked the sign and thought it a great idea. Mr. Golden offered to have signs made if any of the members would like to help place some at other locations. • Spoke with the teacher in charge of Trinity High School's LB program about having students in the program volunteer as docents. More docents may be needed once the Ruth Millican Center is open. The teacher was very receptive to the idea. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported and/or discussed the following: • Michael Davenport thanked Donna Mickan for the birthday cake. OTHER REPORTS HPC MTG 021411 Page 2 1. Chairman Bill Golden opened the meeting with discussion about Henry Murray "Tubby" Huffman. Mr. Huffman, a long time resident and influential citizen of Euless, was laid to rest at Calloway Cemetery on Saturday, February 12, 2011. Quite a few of the members had stories and many fond memories of Mr. Huffman. A very interesting oral history recording of Mr. Huffman has been transcribed and is posted on the History page of the City's website. Mr. Huffman is David Massey's uncle and Mr. Massey was very thankful to the members for their kind words. 2. Doris Brown brought up a point about the value of the player piano inside the Fuller House. The question of how much insurance the Museum has was discussed. Staff will find out the answer and let the members know. 3. James Cannon was introduced to the Committee. He is a relative of the Cannon's and his grandfather owned the EZ-Way Market. He showed several photographs of his family including some taken inside the store. 4. Michele Burger reported that Thelma Mathews recently passed away. She was owner of Al's Hamburgers. Mrs. Mathews had a long history with Euless. ADJOURNMENT James Gathings made a motion to adjourn the meeting. David Massey seconded the motion. Motion approved.
