HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-12-13 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes December 13, 2010 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:10 a.m. The meeting was held at the Texas Star Golf Course, 1400 Texas Star Parkway, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Mavy Wright, Iva Nail, Robert Nail, Michele Burger, Doris Brown, Shirley Mercer, Weldon Cannon, Faye Stinneford, Barbara Collier, Don Martin, Bill Golden, Helen Voss, Donna Mickan, Norma Lively, Iris Elliott, David Massey, Bill Byers, James Gathings, Helen Lightbody, Beth Gathings, Doyle Brown, Gary Fieldsend, Helen Payton, Helen Gleghorn, Joe Cannon, Leah Bennett, Betty Fuller and Tom and Sue Stover. Iva Nail seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer. Barbara Collier, reported a beginning balance of$6,252.74. There was a total deposit of S68.40 which included a S50 memorial for Myra Skinner. The current balance is $6,321.14. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Open House, November 13, 2010: Barbara Collier reported that one of the families that visited was from India and they knew what many of the farm equipments were. 2. Iris Elliott, Barbara Collier, Doris Brown, Helen Payton, Bill Byers and Betty Fuller volunteered to docent during South Euless Elementary school's tour on Tuesday, December 14, 2010. HPC MTG 121310 Page 1 3. Heritage Park Christmas on Saturday, December 11, 2010 had a great turnout. Some of the visitors were Muslim, some were from the Greek Orthodox Church, etc. The staff thanked all the members who volunteered to docent at the event. 4. Gary Fieldsend, Donna Mickan and Jan Bellamy volunteered to docent during open house on Saturday, January 8, 2011. 5. Helen Voss, Robert Nail, Faye Stinneford, Bill Golden, Betty Fuller, Mavy Wright and Jan Bellamy volunteered to docent during Meadow Creek Elementary school tour on January 26, 2011. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Calloway Cemetery: • David Massey handed out a newsletter and a photo of the new fence at Calloway. There are currently one-hundred and eight six names on the cemetery's mailing list. • Five graves have been identified on the "lost graves" list. Mr. Stover indicated that tombstones may need to be made for some of the graves as needed. • There was a recent funeral at the cemetery of a descendant of the Sutherlin. 2. Plaque Sub-committee—Faye Stinneford reported on the following: • Three new names were recently added to the plaque. The members were encouraged to give their money to Barbara Collier, and then let Mrs. Stinneford know to put the name/s on the plaque. • The Chairman/Vice-chairman recognition plaque has been made. 3. Ruth Millican Center: Helen Voss will be meeting with Gary McKamie regarding the building. She is excited about turning Fuller House into a "working"house and making it look like it used to. 4. Display Sub-committee: Mavy Wright will begin working on displays next month. She thanked the staff for their help with the signs. 5. Library Display/Flickr: The current library display is of the Estelle Lodge. If anyone would like to help identify photos on the Flickr account, please contact Gary Fieldsend. 6. Historical Marker Sub-committee: • Weldon Cannon indicated that David and Veva Lou Massey are working on a "Historic Cemetery" designation for Calloway Cemetery. It was mentioned that the Commission already cashed the check for the marker. It was discussed that the Texas Historical Commission is very much underfunded and does not have the man power to properly staff the program. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Betty Fuller reported and/or discussed the following: • Reported the possibility that the display cases at the Library may have to be emptied in order to display the history wall tiles. • Dr. Weldon Cannon was introduced and presented to the new members and the Committee. It was noted that Mr. Cannon is the city's "resident historian." • Mrs. Fuller gave thank you cards to the Committee and all the staff present. She thanked them for everything they've done and wished them happy holidays. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported and/or discussed the following: • Will turn in a work order to fix the drawer inside the Fuller House. HPC MTG 121310 Page 2 • Staff will provide Jan Bellamy with a docent packet to read before next month's tour. • Gary McKamie thanked the Committee for everything they do for the City of Euless and the preservation of its history. • The staff members present thanked the Committee for everything they do on behalf of the City and wished them a merry Christmas and happy new year. OTHER REPORTS 1. Various Committee members thanked Betty Fuller for having done a wonderful job over the last five years. Some thanked the City for the luncheon and its support of the Committee's many projects while others congratulated Bill Golden and wished him well as the new chair. Several people thanked the Mayor for her generous support over the years and several members thanked the staff for their help with the Committees various project. Many members expressed their pride in Euless and all its achievements. 2. Donna Mickan noted that today's meeting is Mrs. Fullers 50th meeting to chair. Everyone congratulated her. 3. Today is Norma Lively's birthday and everyone sang and wished her a happy birthday. 4. Council Member Leon Hogg mentioned that Mary is the January employee of the month. The members congratulated her. 5. Vada Johnson was a descendant of the founding families of Mosier Valley. She passed away last month and Weldon Cannon remembered her. She was a member of the Historical Committee and was the first black teacher in the HEB-ISD. 6. Jan Bellamy is new to the City. She read about the Historical Committee on the website and is very interested in helping the Committee. 7. David Massey had seen a video about "Diversity at Trinity High School." He talked about all the different countries represented at Trinity and how inspiring the video was. 8. Bill Byers presented Betty Fuller with a gift in recognition of a job well done. Bill Golden together with the rest of the Committee thanked Mrs. Fuller for the wonderful job she has done as chair for the last five years. 9. Mayor Mary Lib Saleh thanked the Committee as well as Betty Fuller for the fantastic job they've done in the preservation of the history of the area. She reminisced about when Vada Johnson was assigned to the Historical Committee. Mayor Saleh said the closing prayer as well as blessed the food. ADJOURNMENT James Gathings made a motion to adjourn the meeting. David Massey seconded the motion. Motion approved.
