HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-06-06 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board June 6, 2011 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2011, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Randy Jones, John Raab, Carroll Scott, Alex Horton, Darrel Knobloch and alternates Travis Riffle and Tiffany Smith. Members absent: None. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Recreation Superintendent Michael Davenport and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Mrs. Shireen Jaffer, Steve and Loretta Doty and Council Member Leon Hogg. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the May 2, 2011 regular meeting. Darrel Knobloch made the motion to approve the minutes with a correction to Travis Riffle's report. His report should have included -.:graffiti under the bridge at West Park and the fountain at Wilshire was sputtering. John Raab seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous. I. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park—reported no items of concern Travis Riffle -West Park, Wilshire Park—reported no items of concern Tiffany Smith—McCormick Park, Preserve at McCormick Park—reported no items of concern Chairman Owens- Parks at Texas Star Athletic Complex—reported no items of concern Chairman Owens mentioned that Michael Davenport will give the update on special events. Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports tonight. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens presented Mrs. Shireen Jaffer and Pack 758 with the June 2011 Volunteer of the Month plaque. He mentioned that for the last two Texas Trash Off events that they had over fifty volunteers that helped for each of these two events. The group also volunteered for the 2011 Greet the Soldiers event. Mrs. Jaffer thanked the Board Members for the award and said the kids are working on the Presidential Award and they are currently attending the Longhorn Council Summer Camp at the park. Ill. Beautification Award of the Month Chairman Owens stated that each year from May through October we do a residential and business/civic/governmental Yard of the Month award. Chairman Owens said the June 2011 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Russell Cheatham at 808 Parkhill Drive. This yard is beautifully landscaped with a brick border along the front of the house. The owner has a variety of shrubs and colorful plants which include pink and white Begonias, a hanging basket of Petunias as well as some golden-colored Lilies along the front bed. This owner takes great pride in the work that has been done in the yard. Thank you for helping to beautify Euless. Chairman Owens said the owner is not here tonight and the plaque would be delivered to his home. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 June 6, 2011 Chairman Owens said the June 2011 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to Stevie Boy's Car Wash at 302 S. Industrial Boulevard. They have planted purple and white Petunias at the entrance to the property. Along under the Crepe Myrtle trees they have planted some drought tolerant plants on each side of the driveway. This property is well maintained and a great attraction to the surrounding businesses as well as to their customers. The property grounds are green, well manicured and are truly an asset to the community. It is efforts like yours that make Euless a great place to work and live. Thank you for contributing to the beautification of our city. Chairman Owens said they were not able to attend tonight's meeting and the plaque would be delivered to their business. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Carroll Scott reported on the following for May 1st—31St: • Total man hours- 1023.00 o 201.00 Horticulture o 660.00 Forestry o 103.00 Greenhouse o 38.00 Special Projects o 21.00 Training • There were no trees planted or tree related purchases V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald reported on the following: • Work Session for the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan • Sting Soccer Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. VI. Other New Business Chairman Owens reminded the Board Members of the Work Session and tour of the parks scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Saturday, June 11th. We will meet at the Senior Center and take the senior bus at 9:30 a.m. for the parks tour. After the tour we will return, eat lunch and start the Work Session for updating the Parks Master Plan. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors There was no input from the audience. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Owens gave the benediction.
