HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-05-02 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board May 2, 2011 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011, at the Euless Family Senior Center by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Randy Jones, John Raab, Alex Horton, Darrel Knobloch and alternates Travis Riffle and Tiffany Smith. Members absent: Carroll Scott. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Recreation Superintendent Michael Davenport and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Jeffrey French, Brandon French, Bill and DiAnn Golden and Nancy Smith. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the April 4, 2011 regular meeting. Randy Jones made the motion to approve the minutes and Darrel Knobloch seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Darrel Knobloch -J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park—reported no items of concern Randy Jones- Bob Eden Park,Trailwood Park—reported no items of concern John Raab -South Euless Park, Heritage Park—reported no items of concern Alex Horton - Midway Park, Blessing Branch Park—reported no items of concern Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 May 2, 2011 Tiffany Smith—McCormick Park, Preserve at McCormick Park—reported no items of concern Travis Riffle -West Park, Wilshire Park—graffiti at West Park and sputtering fountain at Wilshire Chairman Owens- Parks at Texas Star Athletic Complex—reported no items of concern Chairman Owens commented on the following recent Special Events held in April: • April 2nd —Texas Trash Off at the Villages of Bear Creek Park — 300 people participated in the event • April 21st—Hands of Time at the Senior Center—200 seniors participated Chairman Owens mentioned upcoming events: • May 14th — Movie in the Park — 8:30 p.m. - Villages of Bear Creek — admission is 1 canned food item to benefit the Tarrant Area Food Bank • June 25th — Movie in the Park— 8:30 p.m. - Villages of Bear Creek — admission is 1 canned food item to benefit the Tarrant Area Food Bank Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports tonight. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens presented Jeffrey French with the May 2011 Volunteer of the Month plaque. He said Jeffrey has volunteered for the following: helping to rebuild the tabernacle at the Calloway Cemetery; helping locate and reset several unknown tombstones of former Euless residents; helping photograph all of the tombstones at the cemetery; helping to trim and shape the Fig tree at the Fuller House as well as storing items at the Fuller House and helping with its upkeep; and tending the garden at Heritage Park. Jeffrey thanked the Board Members for the award and said he enjoys volunteering his time by helping the community. Ill. Beautification Award of the Month Chairman Owens mentioned that each year from May through October we do a residential and business/civic/governmental Yard of the Month award. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 May 2, 2011 Chairman Owens said the May 2011 Residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Todd and Nancy Smith at 302 Shenandoah Drive. This yard is beautifully landscaped with a stone border along the front of the house. The owners have a variety of shrubs and colorful plants which include pink and white Petunias at the entrance to the porch. This owner takes great pride in the work that has been done in their yard. Thank you for helping to beautify Euless. Chairman Owens said the May 2011 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award of the Month goes to Seramont Apartments at 2500 Hwy. 121. They have planted bright pink Petunias that stands out with the surrounding greenery of shrubs and Fountain Grass. The property is well maintained and a great attraction to the surrounding businesses as well as to their residents. The property grounds are green, well manicured and are truly an asset to the community. It is efforts like yours that make Euless a great place to work and live. Thank you for contributing to the beautification of our city. Chairman Owens said they were not able to attend tonight's meeting and the plaque would be delivered to their business. IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Vice Chairman Alex Horton reported on the following for April 1st—30th: • Total man hours- 656.00 o 260.00 Horticulture o 18.00 Forestry o 87.00 Greenhouse o 291.00 Special Projects o 0 Training • There was 1 tree planted and 1 tree related purchase V. Recreation Report—Michael Davenport Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 May 2, 2011 Recreation Manager Michael Davenport reported on the following: • Summer camp/summer program registration • New program offerings for summer b. Parks Report—Randy Smith Parks Manager Randy Smith reported on the following: • Ector Drive median project • Color change outs • Trailwood retaining wall c. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald reported on the following: • Informed Members about Burn Ban as it relates to our parks • Light poles on Midway Field #3 • Detailed class information can be found on the website Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports. VI. Other New Business Chairman Owens reminded the Board Members that a Work Session and tour of the parks has been scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Saturday, June 11th. We will meet at the Senior Center and take the senior bus for the parks tour. After the tour we will return, eat lunch and start the Work Session for updating the Parks Master Plan. VII.
