HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-10-11 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 11, 2010 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Gary Fieldsend, James Gathings, Beth Gathings, Susan Ellis, Iris Elliott, Norma Lively, Don Martin, Helen Payton, Bill Byers, Bill Golden, Helen Gleghorn, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Doris Brown, Helen Voss, Faye Stinneford, Robert Nail, Barbara Collier, Betty Fuller and Donna Mickan. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg Perry Brockmeyer STAFF PRESENT Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant APPROVAL OF MINUTES Barbara Collier was present at September's meeting. Doris Brown made a motion to approve the minutes with the addition. James Gathings seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Robert Nail tendered his resignation as treasurer. The Committee expressed their heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Nail for the wonderful job he has done over the years as treasurer. Barbara Collier will replace Mr. Nail. Mrs. Collier reported a balance of$6,628.41. Two-hundred dollars was from memorials and forty-one dollars and sixty-nine cents was from the donation jar. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. There was no open house on Saturday, October 9, 2010 due to the Greek Festival. 2. Bill Byers, Iris Elliott and Weldon Cannon volunteered to docent during Wilshire Elementary School's tour on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. 3. Susan Ellis, Donna Mickan, Helen Voss, Betty Fuller and Doris Brown volunteered to docent during Midway Park Elementary School's tour on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. 4. Barbara Collier, Betty Fuller, Helen Voss and Doris Brown volunteered to docent during North Euless Elementary School's tour on Wednesday, November 3, 2010. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1 . Calloway Cemetery ni M mr 101110 n age i • Bill Byers took photos of the road work done at Calloway. The road looked great and the Committee was complimentary of the work. Mr. Byers expressed his appreciation to Ray McDonald for cleanup work he had done at the cemetery. It was also mentioned that Jimmy Payton had one of his workers do some work at the cemetery as well. The Committee expressed their appreciation to Ray McDonald and Jimmy Payton for their support. • The Board's annual meeting will be on Thursday, November 11, 2010, from 10 a.m. to noon at City Hall. The meeting is open to the public. 2. School Marker Dedication: Weldon Cannon will meet with everyone involved before the dedication. He expressed some concern about the safety of people who may park across the street at his property. He asked about the possibility of acquiring police officers to help direct traffic. Two golf carts will be on site to help transport attendees as needed. Staff will do a press release for the event. 3. Plaque Sub-committee: Faye Stinneford displayed the plaque and the Committee was happy with the end results. Donna Mickan made a motion to include memoriam and honorarium of S25 or more on the plaque. No one opposed. Motion approved. 4. Ruth Millican Center: Helen Voss indicated that the building will soon belong to the Historical Preservation Committee. 5. James Gathings' friend fixed the "record player." He didn't charge to fix the instrument. Council Member Leon Hoag donated approximately one hundred records that can be played on the "record player". 6. Mr. Gathings spoke with the Mayor about allowing the Committee to display Mr. Saleh's medals. The Mayor was agreeable to the idea but suggested the idea of including the medals as a part of a memorial for veterans. After a brief discussion, Bill Byers made a motion for Betty Fuller and Weldon Cannon to work with the library on the best way to display the medals. Helen Voss seconded the motion, motion approved. Gary Fieldsend and Beth and James Gathings also volunteered to help Mrs. Fuller with the display. 7. Bayless Well: After several attempts, Susan Ellis finally spoke with the owners of the well. It turns out the family isn't doing too well; Mrs. Ellis indicated some reluctance to provide funding- to fix the well at this time. The Committee was agreeable in their reluctance as well. Bill Byers made a motion to put a hold on the work until further review. Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion approved. 8. Euless Baptist Church History: Mavy Wright completed the historical write up about the church. 9. Library Tile: There are still tiles available for sale. 10. Painting of the Beacon: Helen Gleghorn displayed the completed painting. She has an article with descriptions she plans to type up to include with the painting. The Committee complimented Mrs. Gleghorn on the beautiful painting. 11. Evolving History: Weldon Cannon's name was added to the Sub-committee. James Gathings' name was 7erno ed. H C VETG i0 _i ) Page 2 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Reported that Veva Lou Massey, Leah Bennett and Mavy Wright were unable to attend today's meeting due to various reasons. 2. Betty Fuller expressed heartfelt appreciation to City Council members as well as the City and its staff for their generous support; she mentioned the City Secretary's office, Ann Pope, Kim Sutter not to mention the Mayor and the City Manager's office, etc. The Committee gave a standing ovation as a way of expressing their appreciation for everything the City does. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported that the new senior center is coming along well. There will be free fitness classes for seniors if anyone is interested in joining. OTHER REPORTS 1. Weldon Cannon discussed that one of the requirements included in the local marker program was that a person must be deceased at least fifty years before they can qualify for a marker. This was one of the requirements for a Texas State Historical Marker which he felt was appropriate to include in the local marker program. The Texas State Historical Commission recently changed their requirement from fifty years to ten years. Mr. Cannon feels it appropriate to change the local marker requirement to be consistent with the Texas marker requirements. Mr. Cannon would like to further discuss the topic in the future. ADJOURNMENT James Gathings made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. Motion approved.
