HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-09-13 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 13, 2010 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Betty Fuller, James Gathings, Donna Mickan, David Massey, Weldon Cannon, Robert Nail, Mavy Wright, Helen Payton, Leah Bennett, Doris Brown, Bill Golden, Faye Stinneford, Beth Gathings, Susan Ellis, Iris Elliott, Shirley Mercer, Bill Byers, Helen Voss and Norma Lively. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Perry Brockmeyer Doyce Tipton STAFF PRESENT Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant APPROVAL OF MINUTES Under Other Reports, item number 4, Bill Golden donated various items from Euless Baptist Church, not South Euless Baptist Church. Donna Mickan made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction. David Massey seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported a balance of S6,386.72 DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. It was reported that open house in July had ten visitors, August had twenty-five and September had eight visitors. 2. Bill Byers, Faye Stinneford and Norma Lively volunteered to docent during open house on October 9, 2010. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Euless School Contact List: The list was circulated for updates and corrections by the members. 2. ?cquisition and Donations: • Doyce Tipton donated one of the two original door handles from the Euless School building. • A corn Sheller was acquired for the museum. • James Gathings offered to donate a limited edition 1914 Texas Pacific lithograph. The Sub- committee accepted the donation. HPC MTG 091310 Page 1 3. Plaque Sub-committee: Faye Stinneford will have the plaque done by the next meeting. 4. Bayless Well: Susan Ellis will get together with Bill Golden regarding the well. She will get in contact with the owners and report back at the next meeting. 5. Display Sub-committee: Staff had the display signs made and posted with several of the outdoor farm implements at Heritage Park. Mavy Wright thanked the staff for their help. She will continue working on the project. 6. Website Sub-committee: Mrs. Fuller reported that the last display she saw at the library was of the Euless post office. 7. Photo Album Sub-committee: Mrs. Fuller asked everyone to continue bringing new photos. 8. Calloway Cemetery: • The road at the cemetery will be worked on and gravel will be used instead of asphalt. • A new fence will be installed. • David Massey has about two-hundred names on the cemetery contact list. He asked for the members' help in acquiring more names for the list. • Bill Golden has not received any new updates or changes to the "lost burials" at the cemetery. 9. Historical Marker: • School Marker Dedication: Weldon Cannon reported that the dedication will take place on October 24, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at South Euless Elementary School. It was discussed that golf carts may be necessary to transport attendees from the parking lot. Staff will acquire golf carts for the event and help the Committee where ever needed. Mr. Belcher, the Principal of South Euless Elementary school and his staff are taking care of the arrangements for the event. • The Euless School Marker is the sixth Texas State Historical Marker in Euless. Weldon Cannon is responsible for acquiring four of these markers. • Mrs. Fuller will submit a local marker application for the house on South Main Street after the school marker dedication. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Mrs. Fuller visited with the Stover's over the summer. She gave a brief update on her visit. The Committee's continual prayers and thoughts are with the Stover's. 2. Helen Gleghorn, Joe Cannon, Gary Fieldsend and Don Martin were unable to attend today's meeting. 3. Thanked the City for all the support they provide the Committee. Complimented staff on the advertising in Euless Today, etc. 4. Mrs. Fuller and Helen Payton will attend a meeting with local elementary school teachers at Old Bedford School. Upcoming elementary school tours will be discussed. HPC ivITG 091310 Page 2 5. Mrs. Fuller is still interested in acquiring a display horse to display the fly net. 6. Library historical tiles are still available for sale. 7. Thanked the staff for having the Log House re-chinked. 8. Reported that Helen Gleghorn completed the painting of the beacon. 9. Members were informed that "accident/incident" forms are located inside the hutch in the Fuller House. One of these forms has to be completed for each accident or incident that occurs at the property. The completed forms are to be given to the staff. 10. The Committee agreed that staff no longer has to mail a Sub-committee member list with the minutes. STAFF REPORT OTHER REPORTS 1. Faye Stinneford reminded the members about the Committee's donation jar. Money raised from the jar will be deposited into the Committee's account. 2. It was reported that the McCormick property on the southeast corner of Main and Mid-cities has been sold. 3. David Massey noted that it's a very difficult process to acquire a Texas State Historical Marker. He expressed a new found respect for Weldon Cannon and the amount of work he puts in to acquiring one of these markers for Euless. 4. James Gathings spoke with the Mayor about displaying Ray Saleh's military medals. He will speak with her further and report back at the next meeting. He also has a friend who can fix the Victrola on site for free. ADJOURNMENT David Massey made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved.
