A Historical Preservation Committee Minutes May 10, 2010 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Leah Bennett, Helen Payton, Weldon Cannon, Helen Gleghorn, Bill Golden, Veva Lou Massey, David Massey, Robert Nail, Betty Fuller, Donna Mickan, Iva Nail, Mavy Wright, Bill Byers, Barbara Collier, Susan Ellis, Iris Elliott, James Gathings, Beth Gathings, Doyle Brown, Faye Stinneford, Norma Lively and Don Martin. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg Perry Brockmeyer Jimmy Payton Billy Owens David Allen CALLOWAY CEMETERY PRESENTATION 1. Jimmy Payton together with David Allen gave a presentation about GPS mapping of the Calloway Cemetery. The program identifies location of graves, etc. It can also include photos of the deceased, photos of each headstone, death certificates, etc., etc. Furthermore, the program makes information about the deceased easily accessible for research on the internet. Mr. Payton acknowledged Bill Golden's dedication and all the time he has put into the project including photographing every head stone on the property. Mr. Payton also recognized Bill Byers' contributions to the project. The program will not go live on the internet until the Board decides it's ready for public viewing. He thanked the Historical Preservation Committee for spearheading the census and taking the lead in the mapping of the property. 2. Mr. Payton indicted that the tabernacle is over 100 years old. The structure was almost lost during the snow storm in January. It has been repaired. STAFF PRESENT Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services Ofa "Mary'' Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bill Byers made a motion to approve the minutes. James Gathings seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORTS Treasurer Robert Nail reported a balance of$6,386.72 HPC MTG 051010 Page 1 DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Helen Voss, Leah Bennett, Iris Elliott and Betty Fuller were docents during open house on May 8, 2010. Seventeen people signed in on the sign in book at the Fuller House. 2. David and Veva Lou Massey, Donna Mickan and Bill Byers volunteered to docent during open house on June 12, 2010. 3. Helen Voss, Gary Fieldsend and Doris Brown could not attend today's meeting. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Display Sub-Committee: Mavy Wright and staff have been working on signage for Heritage Park. Mrs. Wright and Bill Byers will proof the current signs and return them to staff to put on weather proof displays and install them at Heritage Park. 2. Evolving History: Barbara Collier met Chris Barker for information about the project. Susan Ellis and Mrs. Collier will begin collecting information about the commercial development of Euless. They are also interested in tracking crime rates at different periods in Euless' history. 3. Acquisition/Donation: • Barbara Collier gave Bill Byers photographs of several different farm implements she's interested in donating. Mr. Byers indicated his interest in acquiring three of the items for Heritage Park. The items are in Oklahoma. • Betty Fuller acquired a coffee grinder from an auction of"stuff' that belonged to Iva Nail's father. The grinder is original to the Fuller House and Mrs. Fuller has donated the item to the Museum. 4. Historical Marker Projects: • Weldon Cannon and Betty Fuller met with the Mayor regarding the Euless School marker dedication and a preliminary program was developed. Mr. Cannon also met with the Principal of South Euless Elementary school and gave him the preliminary program. 5. Photography Sub-Committee: Mrs. Fuller reported that a photograph of Mosier Valley School is the current Library display. She gave a reminder that in the recent past the Mosier Valley marker languished in the basement of the Tarrant County Court House until she succeeded in convincing everyone involved to allow the marker to be reinstalled. Mrs. Fuller briefly mentioned her friendship with Vada Johnson who was a prominent Mosier Valley descendant. 6. Photo Album Sub-Committee: Betty Fuller asked if those who docents during open house could help put photographs into the photo albums. 7. Bayless Well Project: Susan Ellis and Bill Golden will schedule a time to go inspect the well. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Indicated that there are still tiles available if anyone was interested in purchasing one for the Library history wall. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff thanked the Committee for volunteering to work the historical tables during Arbor Daze. 2. Thanked Mr. and Mrs. Ellis for putting out the open house signs each month. HPC MTG 051010 Page 2 OTHER REPORTS 1. Iva Nail mentioned that Pat May is very interested in the Calloway Cemetery; David Massey will add her name to the Calloway mailing list. 2. Council Member Leon Hogg informed the Committee that Mr. McKamie said they could meet with Mike Brown, Police Chief, regarding the previously discussed photos. 3. Billy Owens thanked the Committee for allowing him to "sit in" during the meeting. 4. Veva Lou Massey spoke with the City about possibly moving the regular meeting to the Council Chambers as the Committee seems to be outgrowing the Pre-Council Chambers. 5. Weldon Cannon displayed a Star Telegram article about the Fort Worth Court House getting a much needed "face lift" and he reminded everyone that Mr. Euless was the first sheriff to occupy that very same building when it was built. 6. Faye Stinneford discussed prices and sizes for the plaque project she was asked to oversee. The plaque will display names of donors to the Historical Preservation Committee. Various decisions need to be made regarding guidelines, wording, etc. A three person sub-committee to include Robert Nail, Faye Stinneford as Chair and Donna Mickan was set up to review the details and report back to the Committee in June. 7. James Gathings wondered if paving the road at Calloway Cemetery would take away from its historical feel. 8. Mavy Wright is very glad to see Iva Nail at the meeting. Other members were also glad to see Mrs. Nail. 9. Bill Byers thanked Ray McDonald for having stacks of brush removed from the Calloway Cemetery. ADJOURNMENT David Massey made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Iva Nail seconded the motion. Motion approved.
