HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-04-12 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes April 12, 2010 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Gary Fieldsend, Iris Elliott, Ralph Williamson, Joe Cannon, Glenn Walker, Don Martin, David Massey, Bill Golden. Shirley Mercer, Beth and James Gathings, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss, Barbara Collier, Weldon Cannon, Robert Nail, Donna Mickan, Betty Fuller, Mavy Wright, Doyle Brown, Helen Gleghorn, Helen Payton and Leah Bennett. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Leon Hogg Perry Brockmeyer Gary Parker STAFF PRESENT Gary McKamie, City Manager Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services Michael Davenport, Recreation Superintendant Ofa "Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES Faye Stinneford made a motion to approve the minutes. Helen Voss seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORTS Treasurer Robert Nail reported a balance of S6,357.30. Mr. Nail reported that the funds the Committee has were raised by the Committee and/or donated as memorial's of various people and occasions. Mr. Nail discussed the possible need to increase this fund. The Committee was agreeable to the suggestion and a brief discussion was held. Donna Mickan made a motion to place a donation jar at the historical tables at Arbor Daze. Helen Payton seconded the motion, motion approved. Mr. Nail asked if Glenn Walker might come up with some fundraising ideas and Mr. Walker was agreeable to the idea. Faye Stinneford was asked to see about a plaque to commemorate donor names, etc. and she agreed to work on the project. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. David Massey reported twenty-five visitors to the Museum on Saturday, March 13, 2010. 2. Twenty-five visitors visited on Saturday, April 10, 2010. Helen Voss suggested that the baby cradle in the front living be moved to another room. Members were agreeable to the suggestion. �,rT . 3. Helen Voss, Leah Bennett, Iris Elliott, Joe Cannon and Betty Fuller volunteered to docent during open house on May R, ?nth. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Display Sub-Committee: Mavy Wright will give staff wording for display signs for the Museum. She will also include description cards for the outdoor farm implements. 2. Calloway Cemetery: • Bill Golden reported on the following: a. David Allen and Jimmy Payton will give a presentation about the cemetery at May's meeting. b. A list of people known to be buried at Calloway cemetery was passed out. Exact locations of these people's graves are unknown. Members of the Committee were asked to contact Mr. Golden if they know exactly where any of the people on the list are buried. • David Massey reported that the Board of Trustees raised its funds through mail outs, etc. The funds will help with various projects at the cemetery including repairing the Tabernacle and paving the driveway. 3. Evolving History: Barbara Collier met with Susan Ellis and came up with a list of things they think are important to acquire for the project. Mrs. Collier asked for historical information about various Euless businesses. She was given contact names of people who may be able to help her. 4. Acquisition/Donation: • Perry Brockmeyer donated an old Yankee drill. A donation form was given to him to complete for the item. • Helen Payton donated a large scrapbook with newspaper articles, etc. about First National Bank. • Mrs. Payton also donated a photograph of cotton pickers to the Museum. • Mrs. Payton reported that an old ice box has been acquired for the Museum as well. • Betty Fuller acquired old photographs of the McKelvey Pony Farm that will be included in the Museum's photo collection. • The first TV set ever owned in Euless has been acquired and displayed inside the Fuller House. 5. Historical Marker Projects: • It was discussed that a Sub-Committee to include Weldon Cannon, Donna Mickan, Betty Fuller, Michael Davenport and Bill Golden will be established to oversee the local marker project. • Weldon Cannon reported that the Euless School marker has arrived. He and Mrs. Fuller looked over the marker and everything seems to be in order. The dedication ceremony will be held around September or October. • Mr. Cannon is working on a couple more State Marker applications including one about "Euless and Aviation". 6. Photography Sub-Committee: Gary Fieldsend reported that the current Library display is a history piece about Arbor Daze. He further indicated that the Flickr account has a lot of traffic. i „7, a,• 7. RMC Sub-Committee: Helen Voss reported that Gary McKamie is agreeable to converting the Ruth Millican Center to a museum once various other factors are considered. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Mrs. Fuller reported on the following: • Weldon Cannon won the Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Awards from the City of Euless. • Would like a fake horse to display the horse fly net that is a part of the Museum's collection. • Thanked Helen Gleghorn and everyone who was involved in getting the quilt displayed. • Thanked Mr. Stover and everyone who worked on the Euless School contact list. • Asked if anyone had existing photos of Buddies' Grocery Store and the Hwy 183 tunnel. The Trinity High School graduating class of 1970 is having a reunion and was interested in acquiring said photos. • A new sign up list for docents to work the Arbor Daze tent was passed around. STAFF REPORT 1. Michael Davenport thanked the members for volunteering to work Arbor Daze and pointed out that Ralph Williamson is on the cover of Euless Today. COMMITTEE REPORTS 1. Mrs. Fuller and Mrs. Mickan reported on Tom and Sue Stover's medical situations. Members were given contact information and information about how to best help the Stover's. The members were deeply concerned about both Mr. and Mrs. Stover and wished them well. 2. David Massey emailed Ray McDonald about broken hand rails at the steps leading up to the Log House. Hand rails were installed on both sides within two days and he expressed his appreciation to Mr. McDonald for the quick response. 3. Helen Gleghorn is working on a painting of the old airport beacon. 4. Election is approaching and Faye Stinneford asked the Committee to vote for Mr. Stinneford. 5. Helen Voss acknowledged and thanked Betty Fuller for all she has accomplished as Chair of the Committee. 6. Ralph Williamson is moving to San Antonio and this is his last meeting. Helen Voss wished Mr. Williamson a fruitful life and expressed her hope that he makes many new friends at his new home. ADJOURNMENT Donna Mickan made a motion to adjourn the meeting. James Gathings seconded the motion. Motion approved.
