HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-12-07 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board December 7,2009 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:03 p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2009, in the Large Conference Room of the Parks Facility Building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Randy Jones, John Elder, Carroll Scott, John Raab and alternate Alex Horton. Members absent: Jeremy Tompkins and alternate Johnson Obamehinti. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Randy Smith, Recreation Superintendent Michael Davenport and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Council Member Leon Hogg and Jan Hogg, Kim and Michael Raab, Jenni Elder and Darrel Knobloch. INVOCATION Chairman Owens gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the November 2, 2009 regular meeting. Alex Horton made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by John Elder. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Randy Jones said Kiddie Carr and J. A. Carr parks both looked good and the basketball net had been replaced at Kiddie Carr. Carroll Scott said he walked both McCormick Park and the Preserve at McCormick Park and they were both in good shape. John Raab said both West Park and Wilshire Park were in good shape and clean. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 December 7,2009 John Elder said Reflection Park and the Villages of Bear Creek Park were nice and clean as usual. Alex Horton said both Bob Eden and Trailwood parks overall looked great. The handicapped fountain by the volleyball court was not working. Chairman Owens said both Heritage Park and South Euless Park were clean and well maintained. Chairman Owens thanked the Board Members for their reports. II. Business of the Tree Board Carroll Scott reported on the following for November 1 —30, 2009: • There were 963.00 total man hours o Horticulture 189.00 o Forestry 24.00 o Greenhouse 106.00 o Special Projects 620.00 o Training 24.00 • Trees planted - 18 • Tree related purchases - 76 • Trimmed trees in school zones for Public Works • Removed trees at Carr Park • Planted Red Oaks and Chinese Pistachio trees at the Redi-Mix building • Removed broken limbs at Trailwood Park and the Villages of Bear Creek Park III. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report—Michael Davenport Recreation Superintendent Michael Davenport commented on the following: • Thanked Terry, Randy and Linda for helping prepare the dinner • The Christmas Parade was a great event with 125 float entries and only 4 failed to show. He also thanked B&B Wrecker Service for carrying the City Council members. • Thanked Terry for coming in early on Saturday morning to distribute the light towers which were not delivered until late Friday. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 December 7, 2009 • The Heritage Park Christmas Celebration is this Saturday, December 12th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Heritage Park and there will be lots of school choirs singing Christmas carols. • The Midway Recreation Center will close on December 20th for the remodel. • Heidi and Blake will be at the TRAB (Temporary Recreation Activity Building) and the hours will be: Monday — Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and closed on Sundays. • 232 hot lunches were served at the Simmons Senior Center during November • Thanked North Main BBQ for hosting the Senior Luncheon • The seniors have a trip scheduled for Saturday, December 19th to the Las Colinas Symphony b. Parks Report—Randy Smith Parks Manager Randy Smith commented on the following: • He thanked Terry and staff for helping with dinner tonight • The parks staff has been very busy the last couple of months working at the Redi-Mix facility. The staff has designed the SmartScape landscape as well as the irrigation systems. They will also be adding a gazebo at this location by the end of the month. • Parks has ordered the shelters for the dog park and they will be installed in a couple of months. • The Parks Department appreciates all the support that has been given from the Board Members. • Next year we plan to redo all the medians with SmartScape • The Christmas Tree Recycling event is scheduled for Saturday, January 9th and we should have our new chipper truck by then to demonstrate. • Staff also put up the Christmas Tree which usually takes two days Chairman Owens said the parks department is the best around and we have many talented individuals on our staff. c. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Ray McDonald mentioned the following: • He thanked everyone for serving on the Board and assisting staff with all our projects over the years. • The parks guys are a great group and all of them are very talented and enjoyable to work with. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 December 7,2009 • He thanked John Elder for all his support and friendship during these past few years. • He said he is looking forward to working with our new Board Member Darrel Knobloch as well as working with each of the Board Members. • He reminded the Board Members that Midway Recreation Center will close for the remodel as of December 21st and it will be closed until the middle of May. We also hope to have the fitness center open in August and then the Senior Center should open the end of 2010. Chairman Owens thanked everyone for their reports tonight. IV. Other New Business Chairman Owens said he will do the 2010 park assignments and send to Linda for e-mail to the Board Members. He thanked John Elder for his dedication and service during his tenure on the Park Board and said he would be greatly missed. Chairman Owens said he is looking forward to working with our new Board Member Darrel Knobloch. John Elder said he will be traveling extensively for his company during the next year and he hopes to get back on the Park Board in the near future. V. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Council Member Leon Hogg said the only council meeting in December is tomorrow night. The City Council will take a tour of the Redi-Mix facility tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. and then reconvene back to city hall at 4:30 p.m. for Pre Council. He thanked all the Park Board Members for serving on the Board and said he is looking forward to next year.
