HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-12-03 • Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board December 3,2007 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2007, in the Large Conference Room at the Parks Maintenance Building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll Scott, Randy Jones, Stacey Hollinger, John Raab and alternates John Elder and Everett Hartzler. Members absent: Boyce Byers and alternate Sonja Adams. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Johnnie Green, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Recreation Superintendent Randy Smith,Athletic Supervisor John Douthit, Athletic Coordinator Ryan Alexander and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Alex Horton, Elaine Green and Billy Owens. INVOCATION Chairman Owens gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the November 5, 2007 regular meeting. Carroll Scott made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by John Raab. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports John Elder said both South Euless and Heritage parks were nice and clean. John Raab said both J. A. Carr and Kiddie Carr parks are in good shape. Carroll Scott commented on the new benches in the gazebo at McCormick Park. He said the Preserve at McCormick Park was in good shape. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 December 3,2007 Stacey Hollinger said he has attended lots of games and tournaments at The Parks at Texas Star athletic complex these last months and said the facility is always in great shape and always has lots of activity at the park. Randy Jones mentioned that everything looks good at Wilshire Park and West Park had lots of activity in that park. Everett Hartzler said Reflection Park always looks good. The Villages of Bear Creek Park always has lots of activity in that park. He did inquire as to when the dog park will open. Ray said bids should be opened on December 20th and then work should commence shortly after. Chairman Owens said everything looks great at Midway Park and the park has had lots of activity. IL Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens said the December 2007 Volunteer of the Month is Mr. Wally Bliss and the members of the Cowtown Cruisers. He said Mr. Bliss has led his car group in the participation of our Christmas Parade of Lights events for the past several years. Without people like him, this fabulous Christmas event wouldn't be as great as it is each and every year. We appreciate his coordination of all those in his group and we appreciate each and every member. Since they were not able to be present tonight their plaque would be delivered to Mr. Bliss when he returns from his trip. III. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman John Raab reported on the following for October 22"d through November 22nd: • There were 183 man hours • One tree was purchased • Trimmed trees around the amphitheater in the Villages of Bear Creek Park, around the sundial at City hall and around the Police and Courts building • Removed a fallen tree at Midway and Trailwood parks • Installed edging,rocks and mulch in the Harwood Road medians • Helped with putting up the large Christmas tree at City Hall • Planted a multi-trunk Live Oak at the Police and Courts building Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 December 3,2007 IV. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald commented on the following: • He said to look at the pictures in the packets and see the great work that has been done by the Parks Department • Dan Dearborn did a great job with the gazebo • The Parade of Lights this past weekend was a great event and there were lots of people in attendance and everyone had a great time • Heritage Park Celebration is this Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and this is another great family oriented event presented by our staff. • He mentioned it has been a pleasure working with Stacey all these years and he wishes him well in his future endeavors. V. Other New Business Chairman Owens reminded Board Members to get out to staff events and said that the Heritage Park Celebration is a great event for families. He also thanked Stacey for serving all these years and wished him well. We have two new members starting in January and they are Alex Horton and Jeremy Tompkins. Chairman Owens wished everyone a Merry Christmas. VI. Input from City Council Members and Visitors There were no Council Members in attendance tonight. Stacey said he has had many great years and has really enjoyed working on the Park Board. He is very proud of being a part of this great community and he appreciates everything that Ray, Johnnie and Terry have done with our parks system. Our parks are always in great shape and we receive many nice compliments on them. He will miss everyone and said it has been an honor to serve on this Board and to serve the citizens of Euless. Chairman Owens expressed his appreciation to the Parks and Recreation staff for everything they do for this Board and wished everyone a Merry Christmas. There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 7:28 p.m. C Chairman Attest
