HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-02-05 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board February 5,2007 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, February 5, 2007, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll Scott, Randy Jones, John Raab, Boyce Byers and alternates John Elder and Everett Hartzler. Members absent: Stacey Hollinger and alternate Sonja Adams. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Johnnie Green, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Billy Owens and Bill Byers. INVOCATION Randy Jones gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the January 8, 2007 regular meeting. Randy Jones made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by John Elder. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member's Reports Boyce Byers said the only Special Event in January was: • Saturday, January 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. - the 18th Annual Christmas Tree Recycling event at Midway Park. The weather was rainy but several people came out and enjoyed the day, received free hot dog and hot chocolate as well as a free bag of mulch. Upcoming Events: • Friday, February 9th from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. - Valentine's Day Concert featuring Trout Fishing in America- Midway Recreation Center. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 February 5, 2007 • Wednesday, March 14th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Easter Egg Stuffing Party - PACS building • Saturday, March 17th at 7:30 p.m. — St. Patrick's Day Party with Beatlegras - Texas Star Golf Course • Saturday, March 31St from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. —Nighttime Easter Egg Scramble— Parks at Texas Star • Saturday, April 14th from 8:30 a.m. to Noon—Annual Texas Trash Off—Showplace Lanes • Saturday, April 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 29th from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. —Arbor Daze—City Hall Campus Carroll Scott said he walked the Preserve at McCormick Park on Sunday and the park was in very good shape. He mentioned some light bulbs were out in the fountain on the west end of the park. Ray said the fountain company had been called and they will be out sometime this week to replace the bulbs. John Raab said the basketball court at Kiddy Carr Park was in good shape. J.A. Carr Park was also clean and in good shape. He did notice that a split rail on the fence was broken and another post was also down. There were many walkers in the park at Simmons. John Elder said he visited South Euless Park a couple of times during the month and the park was clean on all visits. He said Heritage Park was also in good shape. Randy Jones inquired as to the status of the water fountain at West Park. He said both West Park and Wilshire Park were in good shape. Terry Boaz said the fountain at West Park is on the list to be replaced soon. Everett Hartzler said he had no report tonight for Reflection or the Villages of Bear Creek parks. Chairman Owens said everything looked good at Midway Park as well as Midway Recreation Center. He had no report for Blessing Branch Park. He did inquire as to the status of the outside wall tile project at Midway Recreation Center. Ray said the advertisement to bid the wall tile project will be in this weekends paper and once those bids are received then the project will be contracted out. Carroll Scott said he recently walked Trailwood Park and the park looked good. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 February 5,2007 II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens stated the February 2007 Volunteer of the Month is Quik Trip Corporation and Operations Assistant Kathryn Cox. He said this local business has recently become involved with sponsoring some of our special events. These include sponsoring the 2006 Christmas Parade of Lights, donating items to the 2005 and 2006 Bicycle Rodeo and donating items to the 2006 Texas Junior Angler Fishing event. Although just starting out with us, they have voiced excitement about joining us for future events that we will be implementing. Ms. Cox was not able to be present tonight and her award will be delivered to her. III. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman John Raab reported on the following for January: • Recycled Christmas trees at Midway Park. • Balled, burlaped and planted fourteen(14) Chinese Pistache trees at Softball World. • Collected Eves Necklace seeds for the upcoming growing season. • Held the annual Christmas Tree Recycling event on Saturday, January 13th and gave away ten (10) Desert Willows during the event. • Balled and burlaped seven(7)trees to transplant at J.A. Carr Park. • Balled and burlaped two (2) Red Oaks for transplanting in the Harwood medians. IV. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Update—Suzanne Hendrickson Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson mentioned the following: Midway Recreation Center • Memberships sold - 505 • Current memberships—4,242 • Class hours provided—240 Facility Reservations • Total reservations— 101 Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 February 5,2007 Parks at Texas Star — the last day to register is February 18th and most will register at the last minute. The season will begin on Monday, April 2nd. Registration numbers as of today are: • "A" League—65 individuals • "AA" League—9 teams • "AAA" League—22 teams Upcoming Special Events • Friday, February 9th at 7:30 p.m. at Midway Recreation Center — Valentine's Day Concert featuring Trout Fishing in America. Simmons Senior Center • Attendance— 1,184 • Trips— i • Meals served - 265 b. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald mentioned the following updates: • The plaque that was ordered for Ed and Marie Harrison has been delivered and we need to schedule a date to do the presentation. • The slope erosion project for McCormick Park was funded by council last year and an e- mail was received from our engineering department that construction for this project will start in early summer and last three to four months. The project will include gabions being added on the north side of the creek and on the east end if enough funds are available. The staging area will be located at Joyce Court and we will try and keep the walking trail open during the construction work. • We received the survey results from Raymond Turco and Associates for the Parks Master Plan. Mr. Turco plans to make a presentation to the Board Members at the March meeting. • We have not received anything yet from the company that is doing the aquatic study but should have some information by the next meeting. • Arbor Daze is returning for two days— Saturday, April 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 29th from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will be held on the city hall campus. Ray is asking the Board Members to volunteer during the event to work in the forestry booth or parks and community services booth. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 5 February 5,2007 V. Other New Business Chairman Owens mentioned that the Board hosts an annual Park Board Appreciation Dinner for employees in the parks and community services department in February or March at North Main Barbeque. He asked if Linda would contact North Main and check on some available dates for the dinner and then to notify the Board Members as to some available dates. VI. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Billy Owens mentioned that Euless police officers are making more rounds through J.A. Carr Park and the senior center. Also the parking lights are now working and on in the evenings. He mentioned some trees were planted around Simmons and also complimented the parks staff for keeping the park clean. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Owens gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at7:50 p.m. Chairman Attest
