Parks and Leisure Services Board
January 8,2007
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:03 p.m. on
Monday, January 8, 2007, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman
Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll Scott, Randy Jones, Stacey Hollinger, Boyce
Byers and alternates John Elder and Sonja Adams. Members absent: John Raab and alternate
Everett Hartzler.
Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks
Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Johnnie Green, Recreation Manager Suzanne
Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux.
Visitors present: Billy Owens and members from the United Memorial Christian Church:
Reverend Mary Lou Dillon, Curtis Freeman, Peggy Hamil, Rayford Hamil, Jack Cornelisson, John
Collins and Linda Eilenfeldt.
INVOCATION
Stacey Hollinger gave the invocation.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the
December 4, 2006 regular meeting. Carroll Scott made the motion to approve the minutes as
presented and was seconded by Stacey Hollinger. The vote was unanimous.
I. Board Member's Reports
Chairman Owens said the Board Members should have received their new park assignments last
month for 2007.
Sonja Adams said her two new parks are Bob Eden and Trailwood. She said both parks were in
excellent condition. The sand volleyball courts at Bob Eden Park were all being used on her visit
to the park.

Randy Jones said his new parks are West Park and Wilshire Park. He said there was a nice new
retaining wall at Wilshire and lots of construction behind the pool area. At West Park the water
meter cover was missing by the fountain and the bleachers need to be sanded and painted.
Stacey Hollinger said he had no report tonight for the Parks at Texas Star athletic complex but there
had been no activity during the holidays.
John Elder said both South Euless and Heritage parks were clean and in good shape.
Carroll Scott said both McCormick Park and the Preserve at McCormick Park were in good shape
but there was some trash from the last rain along the creek at the Preserve.
Boyce Byers said the Special Events for December and January were:
• Saturday, December 9th from 1:00 to 5:00 was the Heritage Park Christmas event. The
weather turned out nice and there were about 350 people in attendance.
• Saturday, January 6th from 9:00 to 11 was the Midway Recreation Center Open House.
There were about 150 people in attendance and several memberships were sold. Tours were
given by staff and some instructors were on hand to answer any questions about classes.
Upcoming Events:
• Saturday, January 13th from 9:00 to 1:00 will be the Christmas Tree Recycling event at
Midway Park.
• Friday, February 9th at 7:30 p.m. at Midway Recreation Center will be the Valentine's Day
Concert featuring Trout Fishing in America.
Chairman Owens said his new parks are Blessing Branch and Midway Park. He did not have a
report for Blessing Branch Park. He said the Midway Recreation Center received a makeover with
a new rubber track upstairs, new TV's on the fitness equipment and the gym and racquet ball floors
were refinished.
Chairman Owens said John Raab emailed his report to him. John said J.A. Carr Park was very
clean and some of the gravel on the trail had washed out due to the recent rains. The Simmons
Senior Center was in good shape and the play ground area was clean and also in good shape. He
did notice some trash along the creek area. The basketball court at Kiddy Carr Park was in good
shape. He noticed in the middle of the park there was what was left of a water system timer which
had been opened and the wires ripped out.

II. Volunteer of the Month
Chairman Owens presented a plaque to the members of the United Memorial Christian Church as
the January 2007 Volunteers of the Month. He said the church has participated in the last several
Christmas Parade of Lights and they have created fabulous and beautiful floats each year. The
countless hours of work which they have put into these creations surely makes them worthy of this
award. In addition, their church choir has participated and performed in the last four Heritage Park
Christmas Celebrations.
Pastor Mary Lou Dillon thanked Curtis Freeman and John Collins for all their help with the parade
each year.
III. Business of the Tree Board
Tree Board Vice Chairman Carroll Scott reported on the following for December:
• Removed a hazardous tree at West Park
• Trimmed trees around ball field no. 3 at West Park.
• Trimmed Midway median between Main Street and Fuller Wiser Road.
• Trimmed Heritage Park for the Christmas Celebration event.
• Started tree planting project at Softball World(planted seven trees) along the entry way.
• Planted five Crepe Myrtles on Main Street along the green belt area on the west side.
IV. Parks and Community Services Reports
a. Recreation Update—Suzanne Hendrickson
Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson mentioned the following:
• Said Midway Recreation Center received new countertops in the office area.
• A new rubberized track surface was installed on the upstairs track which should last from
20 to 30 years.
• New TV's were installed on the cardio equipment in the fitness room.
Upcoming Special Events
• Saturday, January 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Midway Park will be the Christmas
Tree Recycling event. They will be giving away free tree samplings and mulch.

• Friday, February 9th at 7:30 p.m. at Midway Recreation Center — Valentine's Day Concert
featuring Trout Fishing in America.
b. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald
Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald mentioned the following updates:
1. He will be scheduling work sessions in the near future with the Park Board so that they
can work on the update to the Parks Master Plan.
2. In late November audits were done on the pools and Ray should have the information
back with recommendations on all three pools in about eight weeks.
3. We have completed or are in the process of completing some minor projects at the Parks
at Texas Star:
o new shade shelters on Jacobs Field are in the process of being put in
o raised the pavers at Yankee Field
o will be installing new batting cage tunnels soon
o the picnic pad at Jacobs Field will be moved to the opposite side of the trail to
alleviate the standing water
4. The low spot which held water on the trail near the playground at Bob Eden Park has
now been fixed.
5. New playground was installed at Midway Park and chips will be added later this week.
Sonja Adams inquired as to the study and/or status of the Simmons Senior Center survey.
Ray said he, Diane Eggers, Suzanne and the City Managers office met with Byron Folse on a
"facility plan" for our senior center. There are many options available, including the possibility of
relocating the center to another location. He will update the Board as more information becomes
available.
V. Election of Officers
Chairman Owens mentioned that new officers are elected in January for the Parks and Leisure
Services Board as well as for the Tree Board. The current officers are: Chairman — Eric Owens,
Vice-Chairman— Stacey Hollinger and Secretary —vacant (Mike Daniel). The current Tree Board
officers are: Chairman—John Raab and Vice-Chairman— Carroll Scott. The voting is to be done
by secret ballots and then given to Linda Lux to announce who the new officers are.

The new officers for 2007 are: Chairman — Eric Owens, Vice-Chairman — Stacey Hollinger and
Secretary—Randy Jones.
The new Tree Board officers for 2007 are: Chairman — John Raab and Vice-Chairman — Carroll
Scott.
VI. Other New Business
Chairman Owens reminded everyone of the HEB Hall of Fame event scheduled next month at the
Pat May Center in Bedford and reminded everyone to RSVP to Linda if you decide to attend.
VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
Billy Owens mentioned that the light in the vestibule area at the Simmons Senior Center is out and
needs to be replaced in order to see individuals that are coming into the center at night for the
AARP meetings.

Chairman Owens gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct,the meeting
was adjourned at 8:03 p.m.
