Parks and Leisure Services Board
October 2,2006
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:05 p.m. on
Monday, October 2, 2006, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman
Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll Scott, Randy Jones, Mike Daniel, John Raab,
and alternates Boyce Byers, John Elder and Sonja Adams. Members absent: Stacey Hollinger.
Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks
Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Johnnie Green, Recreation Manager Suzanne
Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux.
Visitors present: Billy Owens (AARP), Council Member Leon Hogg, Aaron Voss (McDonalds),
Bob and Toni Yosten, Michael Gidney (Albertsons) and Billy Byers.
INVOCATION
John Raab gave the invocation.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the
September 11, 2006 regular meeting. Randy Jones made the motion to approve the minutes as
presented and was seconded by Carroll Scott. The vote was unanimous.
I. Board Member's Reports
John Elder said he visited and inspected the Parks at Texas Star athletic complex twice during
September and as always it was in wonderful condition. He inquired if maybe the bleachers by the
sidewalk area (the soccer field for the older kids) could be moved or some kind of cover could be
installed since the bleachers face into the sun.
Boyce Byers said the Special Events for September were:
• Friday, September 15t — Volunteer Banquet was held at the Texas Star Conference Centre
with 100 in attendance.

• Saturday, September 16th—Professor Brainius Show was held at the Villages of Bear Creek
Park and 150 attended this event.
• September 18th through 24th—D/FW Airport—R&R Program to Greet the Troops. We had
210 people that came out and greeted the soldiers at the airport each day. Thanks to
everyone who donated money and/or items for the goodie bags that were given out.
• Saturday, September 30th —UTA Symphony presented `And God Made the Great Whales'.
200 people attended this concert. This program was funded through a grant from
ARTSNET.
Upcoming Events:
• Saturday, October 14th — Community Garage Sale from 8:00 a.m. to Noon at Midway
Recreation Center.
• Saturday, October 14th — Texas Junior Anglers fishing event from 9:00 a.m. to Noon —
Wilshire Park.
• Saturday, October 14th—Deryl Dodd concert with special guest Ed Burleson will perform at
8:30 p.m. at Softball World.
• Tuesday, October 31st — The Halloween Thing from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Midway
Recreation Center.
• Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 10th — 12th — the production School House Rock
Live! will be performed at the Ruth Millican Center.
Randy Jones said Kiddy Carr Park looked fine and J.A. Carr Park was also in good condition.
Sonja Adams said West Park was spotless on her recent visit and the park was not very busy.
Wilshire Park looked good but she noticed a crape myrtle bush had been knocked down. She said
the park staff does a great job in our parks.
John Raab said the Villages of Bear Creek Park looked good but someone had taken toilet paper
and papered the trees and the water fountain by the playground area was leaking at the bottom of
the fountain. He said he was also concerned with the retaining wall in the creek area.
Carroll Scott said he visited South Euless Park today and the grass was starting to come back from
the hot summer months. On his visit to Heritage Park he noticed the weather vane on the barn was
falling down.
Mike Daniel said Trailwood Park was clean and there was no activity on his visit. Bob Eden Park
had lots of activity and all three (3) of the volleyball courts were being used as well as lots of
people using the trails. He also noticed the `Fire Ban' signs had been removed from the grills.

Chairman Owens said Stacey is not here tonight but Stacey's park is Midway Park and the facility
looked good.
Chairman Owens said his parks are McCormick and the Preserve at McCormick Park. He had no
report tonight for McCormick Park. He said everything looked good at the Preserve at McCormick
Park on his recent visit. He said he commends the parks staff for keeping all the parks clean and in
good condition for our citizens.
II. Volunteer of the Month
Chairman Owens presented a plaque to Mike Gidney with Albertsons as the October 2006
Volunteer of the Month. He said Albertsons allows us to place posters and flyers in their facility
which helps to advertise our special events and to also recruit volunteers. Albertsons has donated
items to our R&R Program to Greet the Troops, Easter Egg Scramble, and Halloween Thing and
they just recently donated 30 cases of bottled water to our 2006 Bicycle Rodeo event.
Mr. Gidney said on behalf of Albertsons that they are eager to help in any way they can and look
forward to working with us in the future.
III. Beautification Award of the Month
Chairman Owens said the October residential Beautification Award of the Month goes to Bob and
Toni Yosten at 702 Live Oak. Their use of shrubs and bedding plants are outstanding and the lawn
is well manicured and has a nice green color. One look and you know the owners take pride in
their work. Thank you for helping to beautify our city.
Mr. Yosten said they have lived in Euless since 1969 and lived at their current address since 1972.
He said his parents also won the Yard of the Month earlier this year in their home town of
Muenster. He thanked the Board Members for the award.
Chairman Owens presented Mr. Aaron Voss with McDonalds Restaurant at 105 Spur 350 (Airport
Freeway) with the October business/civic/governmental Beautification Award of the Month.
Chairman Owens said this business is a great industrial landscape with a waterfall and tropical
landscape area which is attractive and well maintained and catches your attention as you drive by.
It is efforts like yours that make our city a great place to work and live. Thank you for contributing
to the beautification of our city.

Mr. Voss said McDonalds recently had an owner change a few months ago and said this is the first
time ever that they have won this award in the ten years that he has been employed at McDonalds.
IV. Business of the Tree Board
Tree Board Chairman John Raab reported on the following for September:
• There were 342 man hours for the month
• Raised the canopy of trees at the Villages of Bear Creek Park
• Removed dead hazard tree over the picnic table at Trailwood Park
• Removed hazard tree that broke at the base at 202 Ironbridge Place
• Put out fertilizer at city facilities
• Raised the canopy of trees at the amphitheater in the Villages of Bear Creek Park
• Removed school bus obstruction at Euless Main and Pinion
• Removed school bus obstruction at 2605 Sprucewood Lane
• Troy Cain also completed his International Society of Arboriculture certification
V. Parks and Community Services Reports
a. End of Year Report—Suzanne Hendrickson
Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson briefed the Board Members on the different activities
during the year as well as department numbers (visits, attendance, memberships, rentals and etc.)
for Parks and Community Services.
Suzanne said our department also received four (4) IFEA (International Festivals and Events
Association) awards. The awards are:
Gold Awards
• Best Sponsor—Fort Worth Community Credit Union
• Best Children's Programming—"Out of School Bash"
Silver Award
• Best Environmental Program—May Day Mother's Day Plant Sale& Tree Giveaway
Bronze Award
• Best Organizational Newsletter—Euless Today

b. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald
Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald said all the year end numbers were very
impressive and he thanked Suzanne for her report tonight. He also said Johnnie and Suzanne both
have a great staff and thanked them for all their hard work this past year.
VI. Other New Business
Chairman Owens said our next meeting will be November 6h.
VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
Council Member Leon Hogg said he had nothing to report tonight.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairman Owens gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct,the meeting
was adjourned at 7:48 p.m.
