HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-12-05 REGULAR MEETING PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD DECEMBER 5,2005 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, December 5, 2005, in the Large Conference Room at the Parks Maintenance Building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll "Scotty" Scott, Stacey Hollinger, Mike Daniel, Glendora Waldrup and Randy Jones. Alternate John Raab was absent. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Johnnie Green, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Alex Horton, Elaine Green, Diane Golightly, Jerry Waldrup and Jay and Irene Gilpin. INVOCATION Glendora Waldrup gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the November 7, 2005 regular meeting. Stacey Hollinger made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Glendora Waldrup. The vote was unanimous. OLD BUSINESS I. Board Member's Reports Carroll Scott said both McCormick and Villages of Bear Creek parks were in good shape. He noticed some graffiti under the Fuller Wiser bridge. Glendora Waldrup said West Park was very clean and neat upon her inspection. She did not have a report for Wilshire Park. Jay and Irene Gilpin said they walk Wilshire Park every day and pick up trash daily on their walks. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 December 5, 2005 Randy Jones mentioned South Euless Park looks fine and Heritage Park was also in good condition. Stacey Hollinger said Bob Eden Park is well maintained and lots of soccer players. He had no report tonight for Trailwood Park. Mike Daniel said he has visited the Parks at Texas Star Athletic Complex several times and every time the park is always well maintained. He said he attended the Veterans Field dedication and also the dedication for Doug McGrady. Chairman Owens said J.A. Carr Park looks good and has been very active with walkers. He had no report tonight for Kiddy Carr Park. Chairman Owens said the Special Events for November were: • Veterans Day Celebration on Saturday,November 12th had about 200 people in attendance. • Airport R& R Program, November 14th-20th was well attended and every soldier received a goodie bag from the city. • Senior Holiday Luncheon on November 16th had about 250 in attendance. North Main BBQ hosted the luncheon for the seniors. • Walk of Champions Induction ceremony for Doug McGrady was held and there were about 30 people in attendance. BESA was very appreciative of the ceremony. • Holidaze Kidz Zone on December 3rd had 300 attending the event and special thanks goes to Fort Worth Community Credit Union for sponsoring this event. • Christmas Parade of Lights was also on December 3rd and there were 86 floats in the parade this year and they were all well decorated. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens presented a plaque to Jay and Irene Gilpin for the December Volunteer of the Month. He said they have volunteered for numerous special events over the last several years. Some of the events include: • 2001 —working in the coupon booth during Arbor Daze • 2004—Easter Egg Hunt and Arbor Daze Community Work Day • 2000 through 2005 —they have volunteered in the Hospitality Trailer during Arbor Daze • They walk every day at Wilshire Park and pick up trash while walking through the park Jay thanked the Board Members and said Euless is a great city and they enjoy all the beautiful parks. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Mike Daniel reported on the following for November: • There were 156 man hours during the month. • There were 35 trees planted. • The new tree specialist, Troy Cain recently started in the parks department and his talents as an arborist will be a big asset to the city and department. • 1 tree was planted at Wilshire pond, 31 trees at the Preserve Historic Tree Grove and 3 trees along the trail at the Preserves species trail. • Installed the tree ID markers at the Preserves species trail. • Removed a large dead cottonwood tree at the Preserve and removed brush and debris from illegal dumping. • Pruned trees at Building B that were in the way of the remodeling project. • Moved 2,200 live oak saplings to the lath area at the old greenhouse for winter storage. The trees will be used for our Arbor Day project with the elementary schools next year. IV. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report—Suzanne Hendrickson Suzanne gave a report of upcoming events for December and January: • December 10th — Heritage Park Christmas from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with tours being given of the homes and the McCormick barn. We will have arts and crafts, a petting zoo, train ride and pictures with Santa. Everything is free except the pictures with Santa. • December 17th—IceFest at the Dr Pepper StarCenter from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with free ice skating for everyone, and ice show and Santa on the zamboni. • December 26th—January 14th—Christmas Tree Recycling Program at Midway Park. • January 7th — Midway Recreation Registration Party — with open house of the facility as well as the fitness center. • January 19th—Historical Preservation Committee educational program meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. • Midway Recreation Center will be closed on December 30th to receive new fitness equipment, lockers and to have the gym floor and racquetball floors resurfaced. It will reopen on January 2°d • The remote lighting project for West Park is now complete. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 December 5,2005 b. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald commented on the following: • Congratulated Jerry Poteet, Michael Davenport and Suzanne for one of the best parades ever. The quality and originality of floats this year was great. • Heritage Park Celebration is this Saturday, December 10th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. • New playground equipment for the Villages of Bear Creek Park is on the City Council agenda for December 13th and we will also be adding new equipment to other parks in the future. • Preserve at McCormick Park — the contractor has now completed the project; the Historic Tree Grove and trail are also completed. Still need to install signage, grills and picnic tables. The State did a site visit November 16th and was very complimentary of the new park. • At the recent Board and Commission Dinner, he was very proud that three (3) of the businesses that our department works closely with were honored. Those businesses were North Main BBQ, Chick-fil-A and Starbucks Coffee. Ray also wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and will see everyone next year. V. Other New Business Chairman Owens said the Board Members received their schedule of meeting dates for 2006 and the next meeting is January 9th. Board Members also received the financial reports from BESA as well as the compiled results from the EAA survey. Chairman Owens thanked Glendora Waldrup for all her years of service on the Board and wished her well. VI. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Chairman Owens said no council members are present tonight. Alex Horton commended the Board on doing a great job this year and wished everyone Happy Holidays.
