HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-06-06 REGULAR MEETING PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD JUNE 6,2005 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2005, in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Carroll "Scotty" Scott, Mike Daniel and Randy Jones. Members absent: Glendora Waldrup, Stacey Hollinger and alternate John Raab. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Superintendent Terry Boaz, Parks Manager Johnnie Green, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Sandra Sipes (Trinity High School), Billy Owens (AARP), Alex Horton and Chuck and Eleanor Ward. INVOCATION Mike Daniel gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the May 2, 2005 regular meeting. Mike Daniel made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Carroll Scott. The vote was unanimous. OLD BUSINESS I. Board Member's Reports Mike Daniel said he visited the Parks at Texas Star Athletic Complex a couple of times and everything was in great shape and well attended. He said Veterans Field is almost complete and he also mentioned that EAA had their closing ceremony this past weekend. Carroll Scott said he recently walked both McCormick Park and the Villages of Bear Creek Park and they were both in good shape, mowed and cleaned. He also mentioned that he noticed a broken globe on one of the lamps which needs to be replaced. • Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 June 6, 2005 Randy Jones said there were lots of kids at the new splash pad at South Euless Park but said there is no signage as to how to turn the system on. He mentioned there also needs to be some wood chips in the swing area and also inquired if some seed could be thrown out under the trees on the east side of the park. At Heritage Park the barn has been put in place and looks nice in the park. The park is very clean but he did notice a bent picnic table and bent seat. Chairman Owens said J.A. Carr Park looks good. At Kiddy Carr Park the dirt had been replaced for the dirt bikes and said the basketball court was getting lots of usage. Chairman Owens said there were no Special Events for the month of May. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens presented Sandra Sipes from Trinity High School with a plaque for the June Volunteer of the Month. He mentioned she spent over four months coordinating 110 volunteers time slots, organizing and distributing volunteer t-shirts and parking passes and acted as the liaison between the Trinity High School's National Honor Society and Jerry Poteet for their participation at Arbor Daze this year. Ms. Sipes thanked the Board Members and said she and the students really enjoyed helping with Arbor Daze this year. NEW BUSINESS III. Beautification Award of the Month Chairman Owens presented Chuck and Eleanor Ward at 904 Tennison with the June residential Beautification Award. Their yard has attractive landscape with lots of colorful bedding plants and is well maintained with beautiful dark green grass. One look and you know the owners take pride in their work. They thanked the Board Members for the award. Chairman Owens presented Brenda with Milano Apartments at 1200 Fuller Wiser Road with the June business/civic/governmental Beautification Award. He said that all of the trees, color beds and use of shrubbery are pleasing to the eye and this is a great example of how an industrial landscape should look. It is efforts like yours that make our city a great place to work and live. Brenda thanked the Board Members for the award. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 June 6,2005 IV. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Mike Daniel reported on the following for May: • Arbor Daze Forestry Village was torn down from the Arbor Daze event • Rescued trees at the Preserve that were in the way of construction • Removed a storm damaged tree on Ash Lane • Elevated and structurally pruned trees at the Parks at Texas Star • Pruned trees and trained young trees at the Dr Pepper StarCenter and at the Parks at Texas Star—Phase III • Removed dead trees at J.A. Carr Park and also at the Villages of Bear Creek Park • Pruned trees at Midway pool • The majority of man hours was spent on landscape maintenance and also landscaping at the splash pad at South Euless Park V. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Report— Suzanne Hendrickson Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson updated the Board Members on the following: Upcoming Special Events • June 6th to June 12th — the city will again do the Airport R & R Program in which citizens will greet the troops as they come home from Iraq. • June 18th — Movie in the Park "The Sandlot" will be shown at dusk at the Parks at Texas Star Athletic Complex—admission is free. • June 25th—Trout Fishing in America will perform at 8:00 p.m. at the Villages of Bear Creek Park -admission is $8.00 for adults and$5.00 for kids. Summer Camp Registration • Summer camp is completely full for summer and camp started on May 31St Aquatics • Pools opened for the season on May 28th and swimming lessons started today - June 6th Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 June 6,2005 HEB Summer Lunch Program • HEB/ISD is serving free lunches this summer at Midway Recreation Center, Westdale Hills Apartments, Midway Park Elementary and Oakwood Terrace Elementary for kids 18 and younger Simmons Senior Center • Attendance in May was 812 • 2 trips were taken during the month Parks at Texas Star • June 3rd_6th—the Super Series "American" State Tournament for 14 year olds—36 teams • June 6th - 11th—EAA Invitational for 9-14 year olds • June 7th—Opening day for the Euless LoneStars at 7:35 p.m. • June 13th- 18th—EAA Invitational for 5 to 8 year olds • June 17th—20th— Super Series"Minor" State Tournament • June 24th—27th—USSSA"AAA" State for 13 and 16 year olds Suzanne said that Chris Thames was selected as the June Employee of the Month. b. Community Services Report—Ray McDonald Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald updated the Board Members on the following projects: Parks at Texas Star—Phase III • He mentioned that Phase III is almost completed except for some small items that need to be fixed. The scoreboard still needs to be installed and the turf has now really greened up. Splash Island • The splash pad is now open and has been a busy place for the kids to play. He said the parks crew finished their work at the Arbor Daze site and then went directly to the splash pad to get it completed before opening day on May 28th. Ray thanked Johnnie and Terry and the parks crews for all their hard work on getting the pad ready by opening day. He said this is an outstanding facility and hopefully we will have more splash pads throughout the city in the future. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 5 June 6,2005 McCormick Barn • Mrs. McCormick has donated her barn to the city and the barn was moved last week to Heritage Park. The barn will be restored by Bill Marquis and it will be a wonderful addition to this park. This project meant a lot to Mrs. McCormick and she wanted to do this while she is still alive to see the final results. The Preserve at McCormick Park • Progress continues, they have poured more trail, the playground system has been ordered, and we are still waiting to order the bridge due to the excessive erosion in the creek. We are currently getting some quotes on the piers for the slope. The trail, pavilion and playground should be completed within sixty days and the entire project must be completed by the end of the year. Some "trash" trees have been removed but more than 300 trees will be planted to replace those removed. Adopt-A-Park • Lori Dunham contacted him and would like to adopt Reflection Park. She wanted a small park since she will be the only one cleaning the park. Carroll Scott made the motion to accept Ms. Dunham's request to adopt Reflection Park and was seconded by Randy Jones. The vote was unanimous. Ray also reminded the Board Members that the R & R Program is this week and we are in need of donations for the goody bags we are putting together for the soldiers returning from Iraq. VI. Other New Business Chairman Owens said there will be no July meeting due to a lack of quorum. He also mentioned the great article in the newspaper about the McCormick barn being moved to Heritage Park VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Chairman Owens said there are no Council Members present in the audience tonight. Billy Owens with AARP said the Adopt-A-Park Program is really working and Carr Park is staying clean. Ray said he appreciates the group doing their part to keep our parks clean for our citizens.
