HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-10-07 REGULAR MEETING PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD OCTOBER 7,2002 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 7, 2002, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Boyce Byers, Bruce Ebert, Glendora Waldrup and alternate Carroll "Scotty" Scott. Board Members absent are: Carl Miller, Stacey Hollinger and alternate Mike Daniel. Staff members present: Assistant Director Ray McDonald, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Council Member Leon Hogg, Billy Owens, Kevin Smith, Ken Freed, Calvin Petty and David Hager. INVOCATION Bruce Ebert gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the September 9, 2002 regular meeting. Chairman Owens said there is a correction to Page 3, Item III, in the last paragraph, saying "still" needs to be removed from his comment. Carroll Scott made the motion to approve the minutes with the stated correction and was seconded by Glendora Waldrup. The vote was unanimous. OLD BUSINESS I. Board Member's Reports Mr. Ebert said he inspected The Parks at Texas Star earlier today after the rain and noticed the trash had not been emptied and the area under the fitness center was flooded. The men's restroom by the batting cages had a strong odor and one of the commode handles was broken. Mrs. Byers said both Heritage and South Euless parks looked fine. At South Euless Park there had been installed two posts across the bridge to keep the vehicles from crossing the bridge. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 October 7, 2002 Mr. Scott said the only Special Event that he attended was the Greek Festival. The festival had a large crowd as well as good food. Mrs. Waldrup said both Bob Eden and Trailwood parks looked fine. She said the soccer fields at Bob Eden Park look rested and the vines on the fence had been trimmed. Chairman Owens said Midway Park has had lots of baseball activity recently and the fields are now looking good for the upcoming winter. Mr. Scott said Wilshire Park looks very good. Chairman Owens said that Wilshire Park is a very attractive park. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens introduced Kevin Smith as the October 2002 Volunteer of the Month. Kevin is a member of E.A.A. (Euless Athletic Association) and has given many hours of his time to volunteering for our special events. Chairman Owens said Kevin has even gotten his family as well as E.A.A. involved with our events. He said Kevin has volunteered for Arbor Daze, Dixie Boys Baseball World Series, Super Series National Baseball Tournament and the Arbor Daze Auction. Kevin worked the Dixie World Series and put together volunteers to take each of the twelve teams to wash their team uniforms each night of the tournament. NEW BUSINESS III. Business of the Tree Board Tree Board Chairman Ebert said there was only one tree planted during September and it was an historic Johnny Appleseed Apple Tree at Lakewood Elementary School. The ceremony was held with the entire first grade in attendance. IV. Beautification Award of the Month Chairman Owens presented Calvin Petty and Ken Freed with a framed letter of recognition for the Residential Beautification Award for October 2002. Chairman Owens also presented David Hager with Texas Star Business Center with a framed letter of recognition as the Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award for October 2002. Parks at Texas Star Development Committee Update Chairman Owens said the committee met on September 20th regarding Phase III of the Parks at Texas Star. $1.6 million will be used towards Phase III to build more baseball fields, a soccer field and more parking. The goal is to eventually move all baseball fields to the Parks at Texas Star complex. The next scheduled meeting will be on Friday, October 11th at 7:15 a.m. in Building "A". VI. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Community Services Reports—Ray McDonald Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald said the American Heart Walk was held this past weekend at the golf course and there were between 350 to 400 people in attendance. The walkers started at the pavilion and continued through the golf course for a three- mile walk. He also distributed a list of upcoming events from the department. He mentioned that the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner is this Thursday, October 10th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Texas Star Conference Centre. Mr. McDonald said the fall concert series is starting this weekend. The concert series will consist of: (1)the Teriki's Polynesian Dance Revue, Saturday, October 12th at the Villages of Bear Creek Park; (2) Sunrush opening for Tommy Alverson, Friday, October 18th at the pavilion at the Texas Star Golf Course; and (3) Lloyd Maines opening for Terri Hendrix, Saturday, October 26th at the Villages of Bear Creek Park. Mr. McDonald said the holiday events are: (1) Halloween Thing, Thursday, October 31st at the City Hall complex; (2) IceFest 2002, Saturday, November 30th at the Dr Pepper StarCenter; (3) Christmas Parade and kick-off of Euless' 50th Anniversary, Saturday, December 7th; (4) Heritage Park Celebration, Saturday, December 14th, and (5) the New Year's Eve Kids Show, Tuesday, December 31s1 at the Texas Star Conference Centre with Trout Fishing performing. Mr. McDonald mentioned that Glenda Hartsell-Shelton is the new General Manager of the Texas Star Golf Course and Conference Centre. Heidi Hulin has resigned and her job was posted this past weekend. He also congratulated Kevin Smith on being selected Volunteer of the Month and said our department has always worked well with the Euless Athletic Association. Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson said she attended the T.A.A.F. (Texas Amateur Athletic Federation) conference and said Euless received the Bronze Member City Award for having the most team registrations. She said we would also be hosting the regional church basketball league. Mr. McDonald said Suzanne and her staff should also have lots of new programs and events in the near future to present to the Board. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 October 7, 2002 Mrs. Byers mentioned that Jerry Poteet is asking for volunteers for the Halloween Thing and New Year's Eve. VII. Other New Business Chairman Owens said there was no other new business for discussion. VIII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Council Member Leon Hogg congratulated the Volunteer of the Month and recipients of the Beautification Awards. He also mentioned there are some low hanging trees on Linda Lane which need to be trimmed in order for emergency vehicles to respond to calls. Council Member Hogg also said a light would be installed at the entrance to Morrisdale Estates on W. Pipeline Road. He also mentioned that he is to be inducted into the HEB Hall of Fame in February 2003. Kevin Smith said some Grapevine select soccer teams have installed soccer goals on the property that has always been used as practice fields over by the Arbor Daze site on Midway.
