PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
JUNE 3, 2002
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on
Monday, June 3, 2002, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Vice
Chairman Glendora Waldrup. Other Board Members present: Carl Miller, Boyce Byers, Bruce
Ebert and alternates Carroll "Scotty" Scott and Mike Daniel. Board Member Stacey Hollinger was
absent and Chairman Eric Owens arrived late.
Staff members present: Director of Community Services Rick Herold, Recreation Manager Ray
McDonald, Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green, Recreation Superintendent Suzanne Hendrickson
and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux.
Visitors present: Keri May, Raylene Nail, Steve Lineweaver and Scott Wilcox.
INVOCATION
Boyce Byers gave the invocation.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Vice Chairman Waldrup asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the
May 6, 2002 regular meeting. There being no changes Boyce Byers made the motion to approve
the minutes as presented and was seconded by Carl Miller. The vote was unanimous.
OLD BUSINESS
I. Board Member's Reports
Mr. Miller said Wilshire Park was well manicured, the trail is very nice and there were lots of
people at the park. He said there were also lots of people at Wilshire Park.
Mr. Daniel said the trees had been trimmed at McCormick Park and the park was in good shape.
He said there has been lots of usage at Villages of Bear Creek Park and he noticed that we might
lose more trees along the creek bank from the recent rains. He said both these parks are in great
shape.

Mrs. Waldrup said she drove by Bob Eden Park and it was very clean and there were lots of
citizens using the facility. She said Trailwood Park is a very beautiful neighborhood park and is
also clean.
Mr. Scott said there were no special events this past month but he took a trip to San Antonio and
went on the wildflower trip and brought back some informative brochures on wildflowers.
Mrs. Byers said South Euless Park looked fine, lots of kids in the pool and the added posts solved
the problem with the bridge. She said the fence was broken by the Himes Cabin at Heritage Park.
She said this is a very beautiful park and also mentioned that the garden looks good by the cabin.
Mr. Ebert said the Parks at Texas Star complex is a beautiful park and gets lots of usage. He said
smokers are throwing their cigarette butts out in the grass and asked if something could be done to
alleviate this problem.
II. Volunteer of the Month
Vice Chairman Waldrup introduced Keri May and presented her with a framed award for the May
2002 Volunteer of the Month. As Trinity High School's cheerleader sponsor, she and her girls
have donated hundreds of volunteer hours to our special events, which include the Dixie World
Series and Arbor Daze.
Vice Chairman Waldrup introduced Steve Lineweaver and presented him with a framed award for
the May 2002 Volunteer of the Month. Coach Lineweaver is the head football coach at Trinity
High School and he and his players donated hundreds of volunteer hours to Arbor Daze 2002.
Mr. Herold said we can do so much when we work together with the school district and they have
been very cooperative and great to work with during the past years.
NEW BUSINESS
III. Business of the Tree Board
Tree Board Chairman Ebert said all the recently planted trees have received a layer of mulch to
help them survive the hot dry summer ahead. The historic fig trees were repotted into larger
containers and the cottonwood tree at the old Police Station was removed to accommodate for the
renovation of the building. Mr. Scott said there is a fig tree on North Main Street and he hopes that
it can be saved during the widening of the street.

IV. Beautification Award of the Month
Vice Chairman Waldrup presented Oak Park Apartments with a framed letter of recognition as the
Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification Award for June 2002. Ms. Raylene Nail was present
and thanked the Board Members for the award and said they are very honored and take pride in
their apartment complex by making it enjoyable for everyone to see. Vice Chairman Waldrup said
the apartments would also have a sign in the yard for the month of June.
NOTE: Chairman Owens arrived at 7:30
Vice Chairman Waldrup also presented Scott Wilcox with a framed letter of recognition for the
Residential Beautification Award for June 2002. Mr. Wilcox said he bought the house from his
parents a couple of years ago and said he has grown up in Morrisdale and said there are lots of
beautiful yards in his neighborhood. He thanked the Board Members for the award and said they
spend many hours maintaining their yard and enjoying the lovely water garden that had been
installed in their back yard. Vice Chairman Waldrup said he would also have a Yard of the Month
sign for the month of June in his front yard.
V. Parks at Texas Star Development Committee Update
Chairman Owens said the committee would be taking a tour this Saturday, June 8th, to athletic
parks in Hurst, Southlake and Coppell.
VI. Sandlin Park Grant Update
Mr. Herold said the public hearing on the Parks Master Plan was held in May and would now go to
the City Council on June 11th and if approved at that time would then be sent to Austin for the grant
process. He said the Sandlin property would continue the trail linkage project and would greatly
enhance the Master Plan. Mr. Herold also said the appraisal for the Sandlin property came in at
$305,000 and he feels the grant will score high marks when reviewed.
Mrs. Waldrup made the motion to recommend consideration in approving the Parks Master Plan for
submittal to the Texas Parks and Wildlife for the necessary grant processing. Mr. Ebert seconded
the motion and the vote was unanimous.

VII. Parks and Community Services Reports
a. Summer Activities—Suzanne Hendrickson
Recreation Superintendent Suzanne Hendrickson reported that memberships have increased at
Midway Recreation Center to 6,000 active members. She said the summer camp program is full as
well as the summer track program. The pools opened May 25th and there have been many kids at
the pools, and swim classes have also started for the summer. Suzanne also said the rentals have
increased for Simmons and Ruth Millican Centers.
b. Special Events—Ray McDonald
Recreation Manager Ray McDonald said there are many events planned for the summer. He said
Euless is hosting the Celebrity Baseball event that will benefit charities for Gilda House and the
Mike Modano Foundation on June 14th and 15th at The Parks at Texas Star. The Super Series opens
on July 6th and runs through July 13th at The Parks at Texas Star. The summer musical "You're a
Grand Old Flag" will be presented during the weekends of July 12th - 13th and July 19th - 20th at
Villages of Bear Creek. In August the Dixie World Series begins with the opening ceremony
August 2"d and games running through August 8th at The Parks at Texas Star. The CPT (Collegiate
Players Tour) will again be held at the Texas Star Golf Course from August 1 1th — 15th. Ray also
said there is a Tongan festival scheduled for Saturday, June 8th at Villages of Bear Creek as well as
the Philippino festival which will be at Bob Eden Park on the same day.
c. Community Services Report—Rick Herold
Mr. Herold said Byron Nelson was at the Texas Star Golf Course today for his charity golf
tournament. He also mentioned that a farewell party had been held for Duff Cunningham recently
and advised the Board Members that Adena Wallace had been promoted to the position of Head
Golf Professional to replace Duff. Mr. Herold stated that the budget process has started and all
departments were asked to cut their individual budgets by 2.5%, some special projects are being put
on hold, travel has been cut and no layoffs are expected. He said Euless is in good shape compared
to other cities and he will keep the Board Members posted of the budget process.
Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green said there has been an increase in field rentals now that
summer has arrived. He said his department is presently moving into their new facility and will be
moving most of this week and extended an invitation for all the Board Members to come out and
see the new facility.
Chairman Owens suggested that the August Board meeting be held at the new parks building in
order for the Board to tour the new facility.

VIII. Other New Business
Chairman Owens said there would not be a July Board meeting since City Council will not be
meeting during the month of July. He did say that the next scheduled meeting would be August 5th
at the new parks facility.
IX. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
There was no input from the audience.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairman Owens gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct,the meeting
was adjourned at 8:37 p.m.
