HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-12-03 REGULAR MEETING PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD DECEMBER 3,2001 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:04 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2001, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present: Boyce Byers, Bruce Ebert, Glendora Waldrup, Stacey Hollinger and alternates Carroll "Scotty" Scott and Mike Daniel. Members absent: Carl Miller. Staff members present: Director of Community Services Rick Herold, Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green, Recreation Manager Ray McDonald, Recreation Superintendent Suzanne Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. Visitors present: Alex Horton, Bill Byers and Mrs. Carroll Scott. INVOCATION Glendora Waldrup gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the November 5, 2001 regular meeting. Mr. Ebert stated in his report on page 1 it should have read "sign was missing from the fitness trail not the playground gym". Boyce Byers made the motion to approve the minutes as amended and was seconded by Glendora Waldrup. The vote was unanimous. OLD BUSINESS I. Board Member's Reports Mr. Daniel said he did not have a report for Westpark or Wilshire parks. Mr. Ebert said both Bob Eden and Trailwood parks were in good condition. He said the graffiti had been removed at Trailwood Park. He said at Bob Eden Park the sign was still missing on the fitness trail but the park is very attractive and in good condition. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 December 3, 2001 Mrs. Byers said the Special Events in November were the Seniors Luncheon at North Main Barbecue and Alice in Wonderland at the United Methodist Church. The Parade of Lights was a great success this past weekend with many lighted floats and good weather. She reminded everyone of the upcoming events scheduled for December. The three events scheduled for December are: 1. Heritage Park Christmas—December 8th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. 2. IceFest 2001 —December 15th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Dr Pepper StarCenter 3. New Year's Eve Concert December 31'`, 2:00 p.m. children's show and 9:00 p.m. show Mr. Hollinger said he had no report for either McCormick or Villages of Bear Creek parks. Mrs. Waldrup said she did a quick drive by and both Midway and Blessing Branch parks look good. Mr. Scott said at J. A. Carr Park that the gazebo looked good and was clean. He said the walking path needs more gravel and many new trees had been planted on the grounds. He also mentioned that he could not see the signs in the Xeriscape bed and they need to be relocated due to the high growth of the plants. Chairman Owens said the park looks good but the net is down on the tennis court at South Euless Park. Heritage Park looks good with the new Christmas decorations in the park. Mrs. Byers said the new parks building is coming along and looks great. II. Volunteer of the Month Chairman Owens presented a plaque to Alex Horton as the December Volunteer of the Month. He said Alex is the Chairman of the Library Foundation, a member of the Library Board and is also the Chairman of the Trails Master Plan sub-committee that works closely with the Park Board. Chairman Owens further mentioned that Alex was among the delegation group that went to Austin to try for funding on the Trails Program. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 December 3, 2001 NEW BUSINESS III. Business of the Tree Board—Bruce Ebert Tree Board Chairman Ebert said there were a total of 52 trees planted. There were 33 trees planted at the Villages of Bear Creek Park, 19 planted at J. A. Carr Park and 1 was planted at the Texas Star Conference Centre. Mr. Green said all the oak trees planted were grown from acorns and most were about fifteen-gallon size. He said we also have two historic trees. One tree that is an offspring from the Magnolia tree that once grew at the original Fuller House site. The other tree is a fig tree clone from where the Euless Lumber Company once stood. Mr. Green also advised the Board Members that he met with the contractors for the Mid-Cities Blvd. Project and we will be planting the trees for that project. IV. Parks and Community Services Reports a. Recreation Center Remodel Update—Suzanne Hendrickson Suzanne Hendrickson distributed information regarding the recreation center remodel. She advised the Board Members that the center should be re-opened in early 2002. She said the fitness center will be expanded and include some additional fitness equipment. New tables and chairs, new paint on the walls and the floors will be stripped in the classrooms. The game area will get a new rubber floor, painted walls and the pool table will be recovered. She said other areas to be remodeled are the track, gymnasium, racquetball courts, new staff offices downstairs, tinted windows and a security system will be installed. After all the renovations have been made there will be a re-grand opening and she asked that the Park Board be present. She said they would do a mass mail-out to all Euless residents of the re-grand opening. b. Community Services Report—Rick Herold Mr. Herold thanked Suzanne for a great report. He also thanked the Board Members for a great year and said he and the entire staff really appreciates working with them. He further stated Alex Horton is working with the Library Foundation and the foundation wants to help the Historical Preservation Committee to help educate the public. Mr. Bill Byers wanted to remind the Board Members of the Heritage Park Celebration scheduled for Saturday, December 8th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mr. Herold said this is a great family event and the Historical Preservation Committee will be dressed in period costumes. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 December 3, 2001 Mr. Herold also thanked the Community Services staff for all their work during this past year with all their scheduled events. He said the department received a letter from The National Arbor Day Foundation stating Euless has been awarded the National Arbor Day Foundation's Celebration Award. This award is the highest honor given to events which focus on the importance of tree planting. Euless will be honored at the National Arbor Day festivities in Nebraska City on April 26th and 27th, 2002. V. Other New Business Chairman Owens mentioned that he, Boyce Byers and some other delegates went to Austin to attend a hearing for cities to re-apply for money for trail projects. He said this was a very interesting process and Euless was the 71st city to be heard out of 150 cities that were present at the hearing for the additional funding. Mr. Herold said that Community Services Finance Manager Gary Yakesch is the December Employee of the Month. Mr. Green reminded everyone of the Christmas Tree Recycling event scheduled for Saturday, January 5th, 2002. VI. Input from City Council Members and Visitors Bill Byers said he spoke with a lady Saturday night at the Christmas Tree Lighting event and she had recently moved back to Euless and said she really enjoys all the activities that are being offered for families.
