HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-02-07TEEN COURT ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES MEETING OF FEBRUARY 7, 2019 STATE OF TEXAS § COUNTY OF TARRANT § CITY OF BEDFORD § The Teen Court Advisory Board of the cities of Hurst, Euless and Bedford, Texas met at 6:00 p.m. at Bedford City Hall on the 7th day of February 2019, with the following members present: HURST: Bien Camungol EULESS: Robin Edwards, Renu Sloan BEDFORD: Kathleen Toms, Phoenix Sheffield, Jeannette Cook TEEN REPRESENTATIVES: Hurst Council Liaison — Cathy Thompson Bedford Council Liaison — Dan Cogan Euless Council Liaison — HEB Teen Court Coordinator — Mindy Eichorst HEB Teen Court Assistant — Ruby Flores Also present: Hurst City Secretary — Euless Staff Liaison — Claudia Quintero Bedford Court Manager — Hurst Court Manager — Lisa Howard HEB Teen Court Teen Liaison - Bedford Administrative Services Director - CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Kathleen Toms called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. with a quorum of six Board Members present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Consider approval of the following Teen Court Advisory Board minutes: a) November 1, 2018 Regular Meeting Robin Edwards made a motion to approve the November 1, 2018 regular meeting minutes and Renu Sloan seconded the motion and all were in favor. 2. Introductions Claudia Quintero is the new EUless Court Manager and she was present for this meeting. OFFICER ELECTIONS 3. Hold election and vote for officer positions of Chairperson, Vice -Chairperson, and Secretary. There were two nominations for the Chairperson position. Phoenix Sheffield and Renu Sloan both nominated Kathleen Toms. Robin Edwards nominated Bien Camungol. Since there were two nominees, there was a ballot vote. By a vote of three votes for Kathleen Toms to two votes for Bien Camungol, Kathleen Toms was voted in as the new Chairperson. There was one nomination for the Vice -Chairperson position. Renu Sloan nominated Bien Camungol. Since there was one nomination, everyone verbally was in favor for Bien Camungol as Vice - Chairperson. There were no nominations for the Secretary position. Jeannette Cook volunteered to be the Secretary and everyone verbally was in favor. OLD BUSINESS 4. Discuss and possibly take action on items as they relate to 2019 annual Teen Court Scholarship Gala. The 2019 Teen Court Scholarship Gala will be on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Texas Star in Euless. Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst passed out donation letters for each of the Advisory Board Members along with a sheet with Sponsorship and Gala information. All For G0000000d will be running the silent auction by brining several different items including jewelry, vacation trips, and autographed sports memorabilia. The Advisory Board Members also asked if they will also bring No. No bags. Chairperson Kathleen Toms has asked that the Advisory Board Members try to bring two or three donated items to the next Advisory Board meeting. Ms. Eichorst advised that she would like to have the items by the first or second week in March to get them all organized. She also advised if anyone has any specific people or businesses they would like invitations to be sent to, to bring the addresses with them to the next meeting. Ms. Eichorst asked the Board Members their opinion on a small award or certificate for the adult volunteers being recognized at the Gala. The Advisory Board Members were all in favor of certificates and recognition. Ms. Eichorst advised that since there was not a January meeting due to not having a quorum, an executive decision was made to move forward with a speaker. The speaker is Lyndy Phillips, who was utilized by the City of Bedford in November 2018 for citywide in-house training. Mr. Phillips, who resides in Bedford, has several nationwide reviews of being an excellent speaker. Judge Murphy, City of Bedford, has mentioned that he would like to assist in getting a thank you plaque to present to each of the cities, preferably to each of the Mayors. Ms. Eichorst is looking at a few options for plaques as one of the options was a crystal or acrylic 3D city logo. There were four scholarship applications that were turned in and will need the Scholarship Committee to review. 5. Discuss and possibly take action about the Scholarship Application form. Chairperson Kathleen Toms made a motion to table this until after the Gala in April 2019. Vice - Chairperson Bien Camungol seconded this motion and all were in favor. NEW BUSINESS 6. Discuss and possibly take action on a Teen Court Gala Committee and a date for a meeting. The Gala Committee Meeting will be on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. in the Upstairs Conference Room, Bedford City Hall. The following Advisory Board Members advised they would be on the Committee: Chairperson Kathleen Toms, Vice -Chairperson Bien Camungol and Phoenix Sheffield. Also, Councilpersons Dan Cogan and Cathy Thompson mentioned they would assist. 7. Discuss and possibly take action on a Teen Court Scholarship Application Committee and a date for a meeting. The Scholarship Application Committee Meeting will be on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. in the Upstairs Conference Room, Bedford City Hall. The following Advisory Board Members advised they would be on this Committee: Chairperson Kathleen Toms, Renu Sloan, and Robin Edwards. 8. Discuss and possibly take action on a date for the next Teen Court Advisory Board Meeting. The next Advisory Board Meeting will be on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at Bedford City Hall. REPORTS Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst went over the Coordinator's Report and provided the Finance Report. ADJOURNMENT Jeannette Cook entered a motion for the meeting to be adjourned and Phoenix Sheffield seconded the motioryand all voted in favor.
