REGULAR MEETING
PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
June 5,2000
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:03 p.m. on
Monday, June 5, 2000, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman
Eric Owens. Other Board Members present were: Boyce Byers, Carl Miller, Stacey Hollinger,
Glendora Waldrup and alternate Carroll"Scotty" Scott. Board Members absent were: Bruce
Ebert and alternate Mike Daniel.
Staff members present were: Director of Community Services Rick Herold, Manager of Parks and
Golf Maintenance Jon Snider, Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green, Superintendent of Recreation
Suzanne Hendrickson, Midway Recreation Center Supervisor Kathye McCall, Athletic/Aquatic
Supervisor Chris Thames, Seniors Recreation Specialist Diane Eggers, Recreation Clerk Anicia
Brown and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux.
Visitors present were: Council Member Leon Hogg and Glennis Eckels with the Bear Creek
Elementary Cub Scout Pack#546. Cub Scout Pack#546 included: Ned Whiting, Austin Mudd,
Andrew Justus, Ron Mudd,Nicholas Robinson, Ramsey Robinson, Ples Robinson, Austin and D
Greer, Cindy, Anthony and Austin Bird, Matthew and Marsa Berry, Riley, Tuckor and Tatum
Eckels, Isabelle Berry, Shane and Sherry Whiting, Sally and Christopher Mudd and Cindy
Matthews.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Boyce Byers.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the May 8,
2000 regular meeting. There being no changes Glendora Waldrup made the motion to approve
the minutes as presented and was seconded by Carroll"Scotty" Scott. The vote was unanimous.
OLD BUSINESS
I. Board Members' Reports
Mr. Miller said McCormick Park looked good and well manicured. He also noticed the gazebo
had recently been painted. Villages of Bear Creek Park had lots of activity with many people

using the soccer fields. Mr. Miller said at South Euless Park the swimming pool has been packed
with lots of swimmers. He also noticed some erosion on the south side of the construction area at
the park.
Mrs. Waldrup said J. A. Carr park looked nice and the marquee sign had lots of activities listed
for the seniors, there was fresh mulch around the playground area, the volleyball court looked
good and stated there had been lots of activity at the park. She inquired as to the status of the
bridge across the creek at Kiddy Carr Park and she also noticed some trash in the creek bed. Mr.
Herold said a bridge will be constructed and done with in-house staff and hopes to have the bridge
completed before school starts.
Mr. Hollinger said Midway Park is in great shape and there have been lots of ball games. He said
he has no report for Blessing Branch Park. He also stated the Athletic Complex is in great shape
and there has been lots of activity at the Parks at Texas Star.
Mrs. Byers said Westpark was nice and quiet and looks good. Wilshire Park had lots of children
swimming in the pool and she also noticed the hole has gotten larger. Mr. Green stated a new
construction fence will be installed this week to keep kids out of the pond area. Picnic table slabs
will be poured this week and they will be upgrading the picnic area. Mrs. Byers mentioned the
new porch on the log cabin was very nice and advised anyone who has not seen the log cabin to
please go out to Heritage Park and take a look at the historical cabin.
Mr. Scott said Trailwood Park looks good but he did notice some trash over by Mr. Samuels
house and also inquired as to how many times the port-o-lets are maintained. Mr. Green said they
are emptied three times a week and he said repairs have been called in and the new restroom
enclosures were installed today. Mr. Scott said Bob Eden Park looked good and had been
recently mowed. He inquired as to the water fountain and the swings. Mr. Green said the water
fountain is now open and the swings were ordered and would be installed when they arrive.
Chairman Owens said Special Events held during May were the grand opening of the Dr. Pepper
Star Center, which had an excellent turnout and the Dog Daze of Summer.
II. Volunteer of the Month
The Volunteer of the Month for June is Bear Creek Elementary Cub Scout Pack#546. Chairman
Owens presented the Cub Scout Pack with a plaque and thanked them for their help in the Tree
Booth during the three days at Arbor Daze. They mentioned it was Mrs. Glennis Eckels who
made the arrangements for them to work during the festival.

III. Business of the Tree Board
Tree Board Vice-Chairman Carl Miller said fourteen(14) trees had been planted at the new Dr.
Pepper Star Center.
Mrs. Waldrup inquired if a new tree program would be started since the 1 + 1 = 2 program had
been reached during Arbor Daze. Mr. Herold said we would try and find another program
possibly with the Dallas Tree Foundation, which will be working closely with the Dallas 2012
Olympics.
IV. Parks and Community Services Reports
Rick Herold, Director of Community Services, said he would now start having some of his staff
attend the meetings and make reports to the Board. At the next meeting he will have the Special
Events staff attend which will include Ray McDonald, Glenda Hartsell and Johnny Rodriquez. He
introduced Suzanne Hendrickson and said she would be introducing her Leisure Services staff.
Superintendent of Recreation Suzanne Hendrickson said there had been lots of changes and
activities in the Leisure Services department. Her staff members who were in attendance were:
Recreation Clerk Anicia Brown, Athletic/Aquatic Supervisor Chris Thames, Seniors Recreation
Specialist Diane Eggers and Midway Recreation Center Supervisor Kathye McCall. Program
Recreation Specialist Heidi Hulin was not able to attend the meeting.
Recreation Clerk Anicia Brown said she handles all facility rentals, does the daily deposits and
coordinates the summer musical program. She also said tickets for the summer musical"West
Side Story"are now available at the Midway Recreation Center.
Midway Recreation Center Supervisor Kathye McCall said the summer day camp started today
and is full for the entire summer, the fitness room is overflowing with users and Midway now
opens at 6:00 a.m. for people who want to exercise early. Some of the summer camps are: Boy
Scouts and Police Department camps at Bob Eden Park and the Jim Sundberg Skyhawks camp at
The Parks at Texas Star.
Athletic/Aquatic Supervisor Chris Thames was hired May 1st and he previously worked for the
City of Mesquite and is also a graduate of the University of North Texas. Chris said the summer
programs are now underway and the pools have been very busy since opening. He will also be
managing The Parks at Texas Star and stated this is the best facility he has ever seen. Also
registration for the women's NCAA basketball and summer track programs are both doing great.

Seniors Recreation Specialist Diane Eggers said she coordinates all the senior activities. Some of
the activities include pool tournaments, washer tournaments, water aerobics and lots of trips and
other activities. The seniors will be having a picnic on the 15th of this month. A new 21-
passenger bus for seniors (which will be handicap ready) will be ordered after approval of the City
Council at their meeting on June 13th
Ms. Hendrickson said Heidi Hulin who does all the class programming was not able to attend
tonight.
Mrs. Byers wanted to express her appreciation to the staff for everything they do for the
residents. Chairman Owens and Mr. Scott also commended the staff for all their hard work.
Mr. Herold also mentioned Suzanne Hendrickson is the editor of the Euless Today and she will be
working on the brochure now that Jenny Kratz has left the city.
Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green said his staff washed the outside of the Ruth Millican
building and repaired the light switch to the sand volleyball area at the Parks at Texas Star. TXU
was contacted regarding the lights at Trailwood and Bob Eden parks. The restrooms have been
opened at Bob Eden Park. He is obtaining quotes to have the South Euless bridge painted and
the gazebo has been painted at Carr Park.
Mr. Herold thanked the Board for all their help with lights, which have been out throughout the
parks. He further mentioned Resolution No. 00-1071 was sent to City Council to approve the
Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA). If passed by the United States Senate CARA
would provide funds to state and local governments to preserve open spaces, wildlife and historic
facilities via the reinvestment of Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas revenues. The Olympic 2012
venues will be announced on July 15th and the Dixie World Series will be held from July 28th
through August 3`'. The CPT (Collegiate Players Tour) is scheduled from August 13th through
17th at the Texas Star golf course. Also the Texas Star received four stars in the Golf Digest
magazine.
Mr. Herold introduced the Manager of Parks and Golf Maintenance Jon Snider. Mr. Snider said
he is getting acquainted with all the parks and he hopes to makes many improvements with the
grass and weed control throughout all the parks.

V. Other New Business
Chairman Owens stated there would be no Park Board meeting in July due to various vacations
coming up. He mentioned City Council would not be meeting during the month of July.
VI. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
Council Member Leon Hogg said the log cabin was moved to Heritage Park and is being restored
with original parts. It will also have the original foundation, have hand hewn log shingles and a
front porch. The man who is restoring the cabin said he thinks the cabin was built around 1850.
Council Member Hogg also said the bus for the seniors should be approved at the City Council
meeting on June 13th and he recently played at Texas Star and the golf course is in fantastic shape.
Mrs. Byers said the Class of 1955 thanked the city for the great class reunion that was held at the
Ruth Millican Center in May.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairman Owens gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct, the meeting
was adjourned at 8:23 p.m.
