PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
May 8, 2000
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:01 p.m. on
Monday, May 8, 2000, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman
Eric Owens. Other Board Members present were: Boyce Byers, Bruce Ebert, Carl Miller, Stacey
Hollinger, Glendora Waldrup and alternates Mike Daniel and Carroll"Scotty" Scott. There were
no members absent.
Staff members present were: Director of Community Services Rick Herold, Parks Superintendent
Johnnie Green and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux.
Visitors present were: Council Member Charlie Miller, Council Member Leon Hogg, Nita Young
and John Moore.
INVOCATION
Glendora Waldrup gave the invocation.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the April 3,
2000 regular meeting. There being no changes Glendora Waldrup made the motion to approve
the minutes as presented and was seconded by Stacey Hollinger. The vote was unanimous.
OLD BUSINESS
I. Board Members' Reports
Mr. Miller said McCormick Park looked good and a light had still not been replaced at the
Villages of Bear Creek Park.
Mrs. Waldrup said she drove by J. A. Carr Park and it had been mowed. She also suggested that
maybe every couple of months the debris could be cleaned out of the creek at Kiddy Carr Park
and also inquired as to the status of a bridge so the kids do not have to step across the creek.

Mr. Hollinger said Midway Park is in great shape and the ball fields are well maintained. He also
said Blessing Branch Park looks nice.
Mrs. Byers said she had no report this evening.
Mr. Ebert said at South Euless Park the trees are growing over onto the bridge and there is some
rust on the bridge. He also mentioned the pool bottom needs painting. He said Heritage Park
looks nice but did notice some ruts in the parking lot and also there is still a problem with the bird
droppings on the front porch of the Ruth Millican building.
Mr. Daniel said the Athletic Complex looks nice and the new Tee-ball field looks great. He has
noticed the lights are out around the sand volleyball area and asked that someone please check to
see what the problem is. Staff said that lights have already been reported.
Mr. Scott said Trailwood Park looks good but noticed someone had discarded old fencing
towards the back of the park. At Bob Eden Park the ball fields need to be cleaned up a bit.
Chairman Owens said the Special Events recently were (1) Arbor Daze, which was a great
success and thanked Home Depot and Landmark Bank for sponsoring the trees, which were given
out during the three-day festival. He thanked the Cub Scouts for all their help in the Tree Booth
during the week-end; (2) He also said he attended the grand opening of the Dr. Pepper Stars
Center on Sunday, May 7th and was surprised at the large turnout to see the new facility.
II. Volunteer of the Month
The Volunteer of the Month for May is Nita Young. Chairman Owens presented Nita with a
plaque and thanked her for all her help in the main stage ticket booth at Arbor Daze. Nita has
helped in the ticket booth for the last four years at Arbor Daze and said she really enjoys helping
during Arbor Daze. Nita also helps Diane Eggers when she is either out of the office and/or on
vacation.
III. Business of the Tree Board
Tree Board Chairman Ebert said the 1 + 1 = 2 program is now at 100,000 for the month of April.
He said the program has now came to an end with the last of the trees being given out during
Arbor Daze.

Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green mentioned the 1 + 1 = 2 program has now been reached but
Mr. Herold may have another tree program in mind with the Dallas Olympics. He also mentioned
the Parks Department planted trees at the new Dr. Pepper Stars Center in time for the opening on
April 27th.
IV. Parks and Community Services Reports
a. Rick Herold, Director of Community Services, said when the tree program was
started ten years ago, Euless was one of two cities to have such a program. He also mentioned
the Dallas 2012 Olympics have committed to planting 100,000 trees before 2012 and they are
asking Euless to help with the program"Root For Trees". The parks and golf maintenance staff
helped with the landscaping until late into the night at the Dr. Pepper Stars Center in order for it
to open on April 27"for a skating competition. The grand opening of the Dr. Pepper Stars
Center was held on Sunday, May 7th and there was a great turnout to tour the new facility.
Mr. Herold said a"Volunteer Night"was held at the Arbor Daze site on April 24th in which city
employees could come out and help with last minute set-up for which they were rewarded with
food and soft drinks. He said Arbor Daze was a great success on Friday with the Beach Boys but
Saturday and Sunday were slower days than the previous year. He said many complaints were
received regarding the one main entrance but overall most people enjoyed the new layout of
booths. Mr. Herold said there were three injuries this year with one broken leg and two sprains.
He said he hopes to have the financial reports for Arbor Daze at the next meeting.
Mr. Herold said an Athletic/Aquatics employee was hired on May 1' who was previously
employed with the City of Mesquite. Kerry Adair the new Food and Beverage Manager was
hired and starts on May 15th, he previously worked for Red Lobster in Dallas. We still have one
opening to fill which will replace Kathye McCall, Midway Center Supervisor who will be
transferring to the golf course.
Mr. Herold distributed a map of Heritage Park that showed the proposed location for the Himes
House log cabin, which is scheduled for moving on Friday, May 12th. This location will be south
of the Fuller House and will later have a fence around the cabin.
Mrs. Byers made the motion to accept staffs recommendation to move the Himes House log cabin
to the proposed area south of the present Fuller House at Heritage Park and to add stone columns
at the corners of the covering that will top the log cabin. Mrs. Waldrup seconded the motion and
the vote was unanimous.

V. Parks Master Plan
Bryan Klein and Tom Hoover with Hoover/Klein Group were not present for the meeting.
VI. Other New Business
There was no new business to discuss.
VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
Council Member Leon Hogg said he is about recovered from Arbor Daze. He mentioned the
Council is very excited about the log cabin being moved to Heritage Park. The man who is
moving the cabin and who is also an historian, said he thinks this is the largest log cabin in Texas
and it may possibly be older than the family realizes.
Council Member Charlie Miller said he received a nice compliment from a lady recently who said
her handicap son was hired as stage director for the upcoming summer musical"West Side
Story".
ADJOURNMENT
Chairman Owens gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct, the meeting
was adjourned at 8:24 p.m.
