PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
January 10, 2000
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:03 p.m. on
Monday, January 10, 2000, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by
Chairman Eric Owens. Other Board Members present were: Glendora Waldrup, Carl Miller,
Stacey Hollinger, Boyce Byers, Bruce Ebert, alternates Mike Daniel and Carroll "Scotty" Scott.
There were no members absent.
Staff members present were: Director of Community Services Rick Herold, Parks Superintendent
Johnnie Green, Leisure Services Supervisor Suzanne Hendrickson and Administrative Secretary
Linda Lux.
Visitors present were: Council Member Leon Hogg and his wife Jan, Richard and Ginger Moore,
Donna Fisher and Doug McGrady(BESA), Rusty Mitchell (EGSA) and Fred Violette(EAA).
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Stacey Hollinger.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman Owens asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the
December 6, 1999 regular meeting. There being no changes Boyce Byers made the motion to
approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Glendora Waldrup. The vote was
unanimous.
OLD BUSINESS
I. Board Members' Reports
(The new park assignments for 2000 were mailed to Board Members in mid-December).
Mr. Miller said his new parks are McCormick and Villages of Bear Creek and stated he had no
report this evening.

Mrs. Waldrup said her new parks are J. A. Can(Simmons) and Kiddy Carr and both these parks
looked fine. She also reported the Special Events which were held during the month of
December. Those events were Breakfast with Santa, the Library puppet show, the seniors dance
and the Parade of Lights which was cancelled due to the rain.
Mr. Owens said he now has Special Events. The additional events held were the New Year's Eve
concert which had excellent attendance at both the childrens and evening show, the planting of the
Millennium Tree at midnight at the Texas Star facility and the upcoming Tree Recycling
demonstration which is scheduled for January 8t'.
Mr. Hollinger said his new assigned parks are Midway and Blessing Branch. Both his parks
looked good and also everything is in good shape at Midway with work recently being done on
the baseball fields.
Mrs. Byers said her new parks are now Westpark and Wilshire. Everything looked clean and in
great shape at Westpark. She did inquire about eroision problems at the rear of the property. Mr.
Green stated his staff has started working on the eroision problem by adding rock beds. Mrs.
Byers said there has been lots of work at Wilshire Park and everything is starting to look good.
Mr. Ebert said his new assignments are now South Euless and Heritage parks. At Heritage Park
he said some of the trees need to be trimmed and there needs to be a fence around the dumpster.
Also the porch area at the Ruth Millican Center needs to be cleaned due to the birds gathering in
the nearby trees. At South Euless the park looked clean, pool and picnic tables are in good shape,
the fencing looks nice around the tennis court. He noticed some drainage problems around the
pool area, the diving platform looked rusty and the basketball goal was not yet installed.
Mr. Daniel was assigned the Athletic Complex. He has heard many allcollades on the athletic
complex and also mentioned the Dr. Pepper Stars Center was really starting to look good.
Mr. Scott said his park assignments are Bob Eden and Trailwood parks. Trailwood Park was a
very clean and nice park but he did see some broken lights in the park. At Bob Eden Park he
noticed graffitti on the building behine the tennis courts, a hole in the fence area along the lake
property, some broken lights and signs along the path trail.

NEW BUSINESS
II. Business of the Tree Board
Tree Board Chairman Ebert said there was a total of 76,136 in the 1 + 1 = 2 program and 61 man
hours during the month of December.
Mr. Green advised the Board Members that the Millennium Tree was planted at midnight on New
Years Eve at the Texas Star facility. He further stated trees had been planted at a couple of the
elementary schools as well as the Sub Courthouse.
III. Leisure Services Report
Mr. Herold said Mrs. Wakeley is still out while her husband is recouperating and Pete is doing
much better.
IV. Parks Report
Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green said the Parks Department was broken into during the
holidays. Tools were taken, the vending machine was broken into, graffitti was found on the back
of the building and all the keys were stolen from his office. All keys have now been replaced and
locks changed out. He said South Euless Elementary was hit with graffitti as well as Bob Eden
Park and said maybe this will be curtailed since school has started back up.
V. Community Services Report
Rick Herold, Director of Community Services, mentioned the first town hall meeting is scheduled
for January 13th at 7:00 p.m. at Central Junior High School. He also said they are still working on
the possibility of Euless housing one of the olympic venue sites for the Dallas 2012 Olympics.
Euless is competing for women's softball and beach volley ball. The committee should be
finalizing all venues within the next couple of months.
Mr. Herold said we would start honoring volunteers for the Parks Board beginning this month
with Richard and Ginger Moore. He thanked the Moore's for their six years of work on the
annual Christmas Parades and said he looks forward to working with them on future parades.

Ginger Moore said they are very excited about the next Christmas Parade and have already started
working on it. She said the next parade is scheduled for December 2nd which will end at the City
Hall Complex and the parade will also coincide with the Christmas Tree Lighting on the same
date.
Mr. Herold also thanked the Park Board Members for all their hard work on the Parks Master
Plan and also mentioned the new gym flooring has arrived and is being acclimated at the facility
before being installed.
VI. Athletic Associations
Donna Fisher and Doug McGrady were present for BESA(Bedford-Euless Soccer Association).
They updated the Board Members on their season dates, field allocation requests and past and
present registration information.
Rusty Miller was present for EGSA(Euless Girls Softball Association) and also gave an update
on their fees, season dates for softball, field requests and registration information.
Fred Violette with EAA(Euless Athletic Association)was the third association present. He also
gave an update on season dates, past and recent registration numbers, field requests and his
concern for needing more practice fields for the kids.
Chairman Owens and Rick Herold said all the associations have had a good working relationship
with the city and all staff and they will try and do what they can to help them with their upcoming
events.
VII. Election of Officers
Mrs. Byers made the motion to keep the same officers for both the Parks and Leisure Services
Board as well as the Tree Board and was seconded by Mr. Ebert. The vote was unanimous.
The current officers for the Parks and Leisure Services Board are Eric Owens—Chairman,
Glendora Waldrup —Vice-Chairman and Stacey Hollinger— Secretary. The current officers for
the Tree Board are Bruce Ebert—Chairman and Carl Miller—Vice-Chairman.

VIII. Other New Business
Mrs. Waldrup suggested setting a date for the Appreciation Dinner for the Parks and Leisure
Services employees. The consensus was to set the date for Thursday, February 17t at 6:30 p.m.
at North Main BBQ.
IX. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
Council Member Hogg wished everyone a Happy New Year and said he had no report this
evening.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairman Owens gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct, the meeting
was adjourned at 9:10 p.m.
