REGULAR MEETING
PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
August 3, 1998
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on
Monday, August 3, 1998, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman
Richard McNeese. Other Board Members present were: Bruce Ebert, Eric Owens, Stacey
Hollinger and alternates Carl Miller and Boyce Byers. Members absent were Glendora Waldrup.
Staff members present were: Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green, Leisure Services Manager
Julia Wakeley and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux.
Visitors present were: Council Member Leon Hogg and Mike Daniel (Euless Athletic
Association).
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Stacey Hollinger.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman McNeese asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the June
1, 1998 regular meeting. There being no changes Bruce Ebert made the motion to approve the
minutes as written and was seconded by Eric Owens. The vote was unanimous.
Chairman McNeese advised the Board and audience that Jerry Robinson had resigned from the
Board as a result of his retirement and relocation out of the city.
OLD BUSINESS
I. Board Members' Reports
Mr. Hollinger stated everything looks good and the Athletic Complex is in very good shape.
Mrs. Byers mentioned both South Euless and Ruth Millican parks look great.
Mr. Owens stated both Villages of Bear Creek Park and McCormick Park looked good.
Mr. Ebert stated he was not aware of any special events this past month.

Mr. Miller stated both J.A. Can Park and Kiddy Can Park looked good. He did mention in the
southwest corner of Kiddy Can Park that he noticed a broken park bench.
Chairman McNeese stated the Midway Recreation Center has been very busy this past month but
there has not been much activity seen at Midway Park due to the hot weather. He further
mentioned there were about a half-dozen people using Blessing Branch Park for a picnic.
NEW BUSINESS
I. Community Services Report
Rick Herold, Director of Community Services, was not at the meeting due to attending the Dixie
Baseball pre-majors bidding in North Charleston, South Carolina.
IL Leisure Services Report
Julia Wakeley, Parks and Leisure Services Manager, stated `The Star' brochure had been
delivered the last week of July and there are many new and exciting programs. Sandra Renfro
will hold a 4-week class starting August 31st called `Ladies Monday Night Football'. `A Country
Christmas Carol' will be presented from November 30th through December 5th and the annual
Parade of Lights will be held on Saturday, December 12. The summer musical `The Sound of
Music' will be held on August 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th with gates opening at 7:00 p.m. and show
starting at 8:15 p.m. Euless residents can attend free of charge on Thursday nights dress
rehearsals. The Collegiate Players Tour (CPT) is scheduled to begin at the Golf Course at Texas
Star on August 17th-20th.
III. Parks Report
Johnnie Green, Parks Superintendent, mentioned due to the hot temperatures the water usage for
the City had almost doubled from June with 45,000 gallons to July with 80,000 gallons used. He
also stated the City is starting to lose some trees throughout town and we are in desperate need of
some rain. The golf course greens are being watered very sparingly with the rest of the course
not being watered. The playground equipment at South Euless Park was completely destroyed by
fire (vandals) and some trash cans were also set on fire at Midway Park. Graffiti has been found
at different areas in the Villages of Bear Creek Park. At Softball World there was

a hit-and-run which wiped out about 75 to 80 feet of fencing along the rear side on South Pipeline
Road.
Mrs. Byers commented on how nice the new striped parking lot looks at Bob Eden Park.
IV. Business of the Tree Board
Eric Owens, Vice Chairman of the Tree Board, stated that to date 63,547 trees have been planted
in the 1 + 1 = 2 program. He also stated a tree at the golf course (on the 14th green)which had
split was braced and cables installed in order to help prolong the life of the tree. Also a Chinese
Pistachio tree was planted adjacent to the disabled tree.
V. Other New Business
Chairman McNeese stated there was no new business to conduct.
VI. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
Councilman Hogg stated he had recently returned from the budget retreat and the City would
have a balanced budget with no tax increase. The City Council had approved more fitness
equipment for Midway Recreation Center and also a new pickup truck for the Parks Department
as well as the Recreation Department. He mentioned the budget was pretty tight this year but
City Council had approved increases for the employees again this year. Councilman Hogg also
stated the owner/developer adjacent to the Wilshire Park area had been given the okay to start
development of the hotel and office building (subject to the City's satisfaction). He said this
proposed development is expected to be a very nice development once it is completed.
Mike Daniel with the Euless Athletic Association mentioned the Regional Pony League
tournaments were a great success with eight to twelve teams playing The winners were the eight
and nine year olds who went on to the State playoffs in Katy, Texas. He also mentioned the Dixie
Baseball Association is wanting to have their World Series at the Parks at Texas Star in 1999.
Mr. Daniel said he is now the past president of EAA.

ADJOURNMENT
Chairman McNeese gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct, the
meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
