HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-04-06 REGULAR MEETING PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD April 6, 1998 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:04 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 1998, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Richard McNeese. Other Board Members present were: Glendora Waldrup, Jerry Robinson, Bruce Ebert, alternates Carl Miller and Boyce Byers. Members absent were Eric Owens and Stacey Hollinger. Staff members present were: Director of Community Services Rick Herold, Parks and Leisure Services Manager Julia Wakeley, Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux. There were no visitors present. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Bruce Ebert. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman McNeese asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the March 2, 1998 regular meeting. There being no changes Jerry Robinson made the motion to approve the minutes as written and was seconded by Glendora Waldrup. The vote was unanimous. OLD BUSINESS I. Board Members' Reports Mrs. Byers reported that both South Euless Park and Ruth Millican Park were nice and clean. Mr. Robinson mentioned both Bob Eden and Trailwood parks were well used and looked good. Mr. Miller reported J.A. Can Park seems to get a lot of usage and some new windows had been installed in the building. He also mentioned the graffiti had been cleaned up. • Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 2 April 6, 1998 Mr. Ebert stated the opening for The Parks at Texas Star was held on Saturday, March 28th and the attendance was good. Mrs. Waldrup stated she had no report this evening. Mr. McNeese stated Midway Park had lots of activity and Blessing Branch Park looked good. NEW BUSINESS I. Community Services Report Rick Herold, Director of Community Services, stated the city will be contracting out the mowing for the medians along West Euless Boulevard. The Park Board in the near future will conduct meetings with different groups (i.e. arts groups, athletic associations, senior citizens)throughout the city to determine what the citizens needs will be for the next twenty years. Long and short term goals will be determined during these meetings with a master plan being presented to City Council after all goals have been determined. Mr. Herold also mentioned an all day Park Board Work Session has been scheduled at the University of North Texas with the professors for Saturday, May 9th. The Board will update the parks master plan since the city has been rezoned in order to access any vacant land for future needs. Arbor Daze is scheduled for April 24th through April 26th. Landmark Bank made a donation and they will be the sponsor for the Tree Giveaways. The grand opening of The Parks at Texas Star was a great success. Chairman McNeese thanked Rick Herold and the staff for all their hard work. Julia Wakeley was inducted into the H-E-B Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 4th. Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and the Easter Egg Hunt both were a great success with the children. The Texas Trash-Off was held on Saturday, April 4th and there were many volunteers that helped. The Fuller House is scheduled to open on June 9, 1998, and invitations will be sent out to all the Board Members. II. Leisure Services Report Julia Wakeley, Parks and Leisure Services Manager, mentioned the Easter Egg Hunt and Breakfast with the Easter Bunny held by Heidi Hulin was a great success. The Texas Trash-Off Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 3 April 6, 1998 conducted by Diane Eggers had a large number of volunteers helping to clean the areas along South Pipeline Road. She also stated the Inductees Banquet for the H-E-B Sports Hall of Fame was held on Saturday, April 4th, and she was the first female to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. She received a jacket, ball cap, and rocking chair as well as her portrait being added at Pennington Field. III. Parks Report Johnnie Green, Parks Superintendent, stated the department has devoted most of their time to the Athletic Complex and will start within the next week to help with the setup of Arbor Daze. He also said new signage will be installed on the City Hall campus as well as The Parks at Texas Star. He further mentioned a new car dealership which is in the process of developing the vacant land west of The Plant Shed plans to put a pond in by the Wilshire Park area(which is city owned property). This area will be a retention/holding pond facility and will have lighting, fishing, picnic stations and a trail around it. The proposed development will consist of offices, a car dealership and a possible restaurant and hotel. IV. Business of the Tree Board Jerry Robinson, Chairman of the Tree Board, stated that to date 53,365 trees have been planted in the 1 + 1 = 2 program. He further mentioned the Parks Department had finished planting trees for Phase I of the new Athletic Complex. They have also started 1,000 more red oak acorns for Arbor Daze. Mr. Robinson also passed around a sign-up sheet for working the booth at Arbor Daze for the tree giveaways. V. Other New Business Chairman McNeese stated there was no new business to conduct. VI. Input from City Council Members and Visitors There were no visitors at the meeting. Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 4 April 6, 1998 ADJOURNMENT Chairman McNeese gave the benediction.
