PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
March 2, 1998
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on
Monday, March 2, 1998, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman
Richard McNeese. Other Board Members present were: Glendora Waldrup, Jerry Robinson,
Bruce Ebert and alternate Carl Miller. Members absent were Eric Owens, Stacey Hollinger and
alternate Boyce Byers.
Staff members present were: Parks and Leisure Services Manager Julia Wakeley, Parks
Superintendent Johnnie Green and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux.
Visitors present were: Mr. Sadhu Shori with the H-E-B Sports Hall of Fame and Council
Member Leon Hogg.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Glendora Waldrup.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman McNeese asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the
February 2, 1998 regular meeting. There being no changes Glendora Waldrup made the motion
to approve the minutes as written and was seconded by Jerry Robinson. The vote was
unanimous.
OLD BUSINESS
I. Board Members' Reports
Mr. Ebert stated he had no report this evening.
Mrs. Waldrup reported that J. A. Can Park looked good, the rose bed had recently been tended,
a new volleyball net had been installed, sand poured and everything looked clean. She said she
recently spoke with Senior Citizen Coordinator Diane Eggers about getting some senior citizens
who would like to volunteer their time to care and tend to the rose garden. Mrs. Waldrup stated
Kiddy Carr Park looked fine.

Mr. Miller said McCormick Park looked good and the grass had recently been mowed but there
was a broken post on the gazebo. He further mentioned Villages of Bear Creek also looked good
but he noticed the City had lost another big tree in the park.
Mr. Robinson mentioned the batting cages at The Parks at Texas Star had been very busy and the
Athletic Complex is really looking good. He also inquired as to if the overflow parking lot would
be completed by the opening date of March 28th. Jolwue Green, Parks Superintendent, stated
the lot is being scraped and should be ready for the opening.
Mr. McNeese stated he had no report this evening.
NEW BUSINESS
I. Community Services Report
Rick Herold, Director of Community Services, was absent from the meeting due to attending the
Tree City U.S.A. National Conference in Nebraska.
II. Parks Report
Johnnie Green, Parks Superintendent, said the rye grass seed which had been planted is looking
good and growing very fast. He said they have almost completed the tree plantings and the
Athletic Complex lights are in the process of being changed out with the new bulbs. They will
also have the overflow parking lot completed soon. Practice has also started this past weekend at
the Villages of Bear Creek Park.
III. Leisure Services Report
Julia Wakeley, Parks and Leisure Services Manager, handed out applications for the Ultra Classic
Golf Tournament scheduled for March 20th as well as the Arbor Daze Live& Silent Auction
invitations for March 14th. She also mentioned the Lu Mitchell show February 21st was good but
the attendance was low. The valentine event which Heidi Hulin held on February 13th was a
great success. Tim O'Connell's "Friday Night at The Rec"held on February 21st had a very
good turnout.

IV. Business of the Tree Board
Jerry Robinson, Chairman of the Tree Board, stated that to date 53,355 trees have been planted in
the 1 + 1 =2 program. He further mentioned the Parks Department had planted 3,000 red oak
acorns at the greenhouse for next years Arbor Daze tree giveaway. Mr. Robinson also stated the
Tree Conservation Ordinance is still being reviewed by the Development Department staff and
City Planner Carol Griffith hopes to have the revised draft for the Board's review in April.
V. Other New Business
(a) Mr. Sadhu Shori with the H-E-B Sports Hall of Fame at Pennington Field was
present in order to invite the Board to the Inductee Banquet on April 4th at the
Hurst Recreation Center. At that time they will induct Parks and Leisure Services
Manager Julia Wakeley as the first woman into the Sports Hall of Fame. The
purpose of the Sports Hall of Fame is to recognize people who have been involved
in and made contributions to the community. Mr. Short passed out information for
ordering tickets to the banquet on April 4th at 6:30 p.m. and invited everyone to
attend this very prestigious event.
Chairman McNeese advised the Board Members of the new 1998 park assignments. The new
assignments are as follows: Jerry Robinson(Bob Eden and Trailwood Parks); Boyce Byers
(South Euless and Ruth Millican Parks); Eric Owens (McCormick and Villages of Bear Creek
Parks); Carl Miller(J.A. Carr [Simmons] and Kiddy Carr Parks); Glendora Waldrup(Westpark ad
Wilshire Parks); Chairman McNeese (Midway and Blessing Branch Parks); Bruce Ebert (Special
Events) and Stacey Hollinger(Athletic Complex).
VI. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
Councilman Hogg mentioned the City hopes to start on Phase II of the Athletic Complex in the
near future. Additional lighting has been added around the Midway Park area. We will be
celebrating the 10th anniversary of Arbor Daze next month. Councilman Hogg further mentioned
the City is also still working on the vacant Western Hills property on W. Euless Boulevard which
in the near future will be torn down and a new facility built to house the Police Station and
Municipal Court offices.

ADJOURNMENT
Chairman McNeese gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct, the
meeting was adjourned at 8:08 p.m.
