OF THE
ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY BOARD
April 21, 2011
ITEM 1 — CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Animal Shelter Advisory Board was called to order by Chairman Dr.
Gayla Maas at 11:00 A.M. at the City of Euless Animal Control Shelter, 1517 Westpark
Way, Euless, Texas 76040.
The following members were in attendance:
Gayla Maas, D.V.M.
Leon Hogg
Michelle Watson
JT Ackerman
Staff Support: Ron Young, Larry James, & Cynthia Daniel
Citizen Attendance: None
ITEM 2 - REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES FROM MEETING OF JANUARY 20,
2011
Chairman Maas asked if there were any questions regarding the minutes of January 20,
2011. Leon Hogg made a motion to approve the Minutes of January 20, 2011. Michelle
Watson seconded the motion. Motion approved.
ITEM 3 - STAFF REPORT— SHELTER OPERATIONS
JT Ackerman reported that employee, Jodan Shelton passed the euthanasia training
and is one step closer to obtaining certification to be fifth certified animal control officer.
Reiterated that all officer certifications are current.
ITEM 4 - SHELTER STATISTICS REPORT
Chairman Maas commented that the number of calls for service are down, dead
animals removed was up. Larry James said it was mostly wildlife — opossum, skunks,
squirrels, raccoons. Ron Young commented that animals picked up was down slightly
from same time last year, animals released to owners down — about half of what is was
before, animals adopted down, euthanasias down, animal bites were down, citations
were down, and animals in the shelter were down. Overall, everything is down except

dead animals removed compared to same quarter last year. Discussed whether this
was related to the economy. Chairman Maas thinks that there are more dead animals
because development keeps taking away the wildlife's habitats so more animals in the
roads.
ITEM 5 — DOG DAZE PREVIEW AND PLANNING
Chairman Maas stated all vaccination prices are figured out and that Larry James has a
price list available if he gets calls. The price of rabies shots did not go up but other
vaccines did. She tried to keep prices as close to the old prices as she could. Will set
up tables like last year's arrangement. Set for May 7th. Larry's brother's company is
donating the drinks and snacks. No hot dogs this year. Michelle has been unable to
contact the snow cone vendor.
ITEM 6 - SHELTER RELATED LEGISLATIVE BILLS FILED
Discussed some of the proposed State Legislative House Bills that would affect the
Animal Shelter that are mentioned in recent TML Legislative Updates such as HB 3450
- Animal Shelters. Chairman Maas thinks that the shelter is already in compliance and
even exceeding what is in the Bill. Discussed feral cat and euthanasia portions of the
Bill. There will be added costs for shelters if this is implemented. Larry mentioned
proposed HB 1919 which deals with allowing the killing of an animal/dog if a person is in
fear of their life. Chairman Maas said the RPOA (Responsible Pet Owners Alliance) is
heavily lobbying to block some of these bills from passing in Austin.
ITEM 7 - REVIEW OF SATURDAY OPERATIONS AND STATISTICS
Larry reported that staff has been calling from A to Z - residents who have registered
their pets with the City online to request proof of rabies vaccination info. They have
been getting a good response. Staff found out there wasn't a place on the online
registration form for the date of rabies vaccination. Tommy in Information Services (IS)
has fixed the glitch. People are returning their calls and sending in the info. JT said
they have talked to Tommy in IS and Adam Eakin who maintains the city's website
about the possibility of getting that data and send out a mass e-mail request for updated
phone numbers, ask if person still has the animal that is registered, and ask if they have
the rabies certificates things of that nature. This will be ongoing as time allows the IS
staff to develop the software. This is an attempt to not lose track of animals as people
move in and out of Euless.

into four categories: (1) Calls for service — 60 calls including standby; (2) Animal intake
— 24 brought in when open; (3) Animals released to owners — 4 owner pick ups; and (4)
Adoptions initiated on Saturday— 21 adoptions.
ITEM 8 - BOARD MEMBERS OR CITIZENS REQUESTS OF ITEMS OF INTEREST
TO BE ADDRESSED BY STAFF AND/OR PLACED ON FUTURE AGENDAS
Ron asked how the new fenced area in the back of Shelter is working for the GAP Club
girls. Larry said it's great and that the tree has been trimmed. The final cost of the
fence was $800. Shelter has not received any contributions for the fence from the GAP
Club girls yet. Staff will report at next meeting if any donations have been received from
the GAP Club for fencing costs.
The GAP Club fundraiser/dog adoption event for the Shelter is scheduled for May 14th
Commended the GAP Club girls who have been utilizing the fenced area to work with
the shelter dogs to exercise them, teach them manners, and to socialize them so that
they are more adoptable and less likely to be returned.
Shelter is ready for the summer- is set up with water hoses for bathing dogs and has air
conditioning in kennel area.
