PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
May 5, 1997
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:03 p.m. on
Monday, May 5, 1997, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman
Richard McNeese. Other Board Members present were: Eric Owens, Jerry Robinson, Stacey
Hollinger, Bruce Ebert, Glendora Waldrup and alternate Carl Miller. Boyce Byers was absent.
Staff members present were: Community Services Director Rick Herold, Parks and Leisure
Services Manager Julia Wakeley and Administrative Secretary Linda Lux.
Visitors present were: Gregg Garcia, Tournament Coordinator for the Bedford-Euless Soccer
Association (BESA)
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Jerry Robinson.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairman McNeese asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the
March 3, 1997 regular meeting. There being no changes Eric Owens made the motion to
approve the minutes as written and was seconded by Stacey Hollinger. The vote was unanimous.
AWARDS PRESENTATION
There were no awards presented this month.
OLD BUSINESS
I. Board Members Reports
Mr. Hollinger stated South Euless was nice and neat except for around the picnic tables. He
noticed it was time to mow Ruth Millican again.
Mr. Robinson reported the athletic complex is really coming along now. He said there had been
numerous changes with the pouring of concrete, the amphitheater and the lights were now up.

Mr. Owens stated that both Westpark and Wilshire parks were looking good but they might need
mowing.
Mrs. Waldrup stated J.A. Can Park really looked good, the gazebo was nice and the roses could
use some weeding. She stateded she was concerned with a 10-inch pipe sticking up out of the
ground which the children could get hurt if they fell. She also commented on how good the
xeriscape looked. She also stated Kiddie Can Park was okay.
Mr. Ebert stated Midway has had lots of usage and the playground equipment could use some
painting. Mr. Ebert stated Blessing Branch Park looked nice.
Mr. McNeese said he would let Mrs. Wakeley and Mr. Herold inform the Board on any special
events taking place.
Mr. Miller stated McCormick Park was nice and clean but some of the fence had been down
awhile and the gazebo had some rails missing. Villages of Bear Creek is a great looking park and
he has planned a field trip for his class next week.
NEW BUSINESS
I. Parks Report
Rick Herold, Director of Community Services, said the mowing has gotten away from the Parks
Department due to Arbor Daze and working on the golf course. Arbor Daze made money this
year, evaluation forms will be out soon and the Board will receive a copy of this as well as City
Council Members. He also invited the Board to tour the golf course next month. Mr. Herold
gave a brief summary of the construction projects and their status:
1. Phase 2 grant will be due in August.
2. All the big fields are now built, the volleyball courts are done and the City will be
doing the grassing.
3. When the complex is done all the associations will get to use the fields with maybe
a couple of fields being dedicated. When Phase I opens all facilities will be used.
4. New golf course directional signs have been placed all over town.
5. "Media Day"there will be a shotgun at 1:00 p.m. with dinner (N. Main BBQ)
6. On"Media Day" (Wednesday, May 7) some of the guests will be: Scott Murry
(doing a live sports cast ), Pat Summerall, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, PGA Tour
Films, D-Magazine and architect Keith Foster.

7. The club house should be open in July, the pavilion is now completed and players
will be shuttled to the club house.
8. On Sunday, May 18, dignitaries will be in town for the grand opening of the golf
tournaments (with dinner being served at the pavilion). The golf tournaments are
scheduled for Monday and Tuesday(May 19 and 20) and the grand opening to the
public is scheduled for Thursday, May 22.
9. Anyone desiring to work as marshals, cart attendants or batting cages should plan
to attend the"Golf Orientation" on Thursday, May 15.
10. South Airport Drive has been officially changed to "Texas Star Parkway".
11. The first assistant golf pro has been hired and is a woman- Adena Wallace.
12. In August Phase 2 of the grant will be due.
13. The parks trails will start after the first of the year(1998).
14. The new EZ-Go golf carts are in and they are the top of the line.
IL Leisure Services Report
Julia Wakeley, Parks and Leisure Services Manager, mentioned a new prototype of the new
brochure"The Star"will be coming out in a few weeks and has lots of new classes for summer.
Ms. Wakeley attended the Mayors Conference and Jazz Festival in New Orleans with Mayor
Saleh. The festival is operated at the fairgrounds for 10 days and is open for a total of 60 hours
(6 hours/day), with 75 food vendors(Euless had 25-29) and with a boost to their economy of$2
million.
Mrs. Waldrup thanked the staff for the Arbor Daze packets which were sent to them.
Mr. Ebert commented on the size of Arbor Daze now and what would happen if it gets any larger.
Mr. Herold mentioned the possibility of using the Texas Star Athletic Complex and the golf
course (if South Pipeline Road could be closed down). He said on Saturday, April 19th, about
90,000 people attended Arbor Daze. He also stated KLUV will try and find $125,000 in
sponsorships for the city for Arbor Daze 98.
III. Business of the Tree Board
Chairman McNeese stated that to date over 50,000 trees had been given away. He said the
50,000 tree given away was to Gracey Hobbs,Live Oak Lane in Euless. Ms. Hobbs was
interviewed by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram during Arbor Daze. Chairman McNeese thanked

all the Board Members, staff and volunteers who worked so hard to make Arbor Daze 97 a great
success.
IV. Other New Business
Chairman McNeese passed around a letter he received from the Mayor regarding Arbor Daze.
Mrs. Waldrup stated she would like to tour the golf course soon.
Mr. Herold stated on Thursday June 5th, at 5:30 p.m. all Board Members and staff would meet at
the golf course pavilion, have box lunches and tour the golf course and athletic complex.
Carl Miller expressed his thanks to Rick Herold and the Lions Club for furnishing buses for his
class field trip. Mr. Miller also thanked Julia Wakeley and Tim Roland for the transportation used
in taking the children to the Ranger game.
V. Input from City Council Members and Visitors
Mr. Gregg Garcia, Tournament Coordinator with the Bedford-Euless Soccer Association(BESA)
apologized to the Board Members for not notifying them of the Texas Thunder 4 on 4 tournament
cancellation this year. They do plan on restarting the 4 on 4 next year and look forward to
working with the City again.
Chairman McNeese accepted his apology for the Board and staff.
Mr. Garcia asked permission to use the Bear Creek facility for a youth soccer camp this summer
from July 21-25 (5:30 till 8:30 each night)which would be operated by the Texas Youth Soccer
Camps which is a local group that teaches children soccer skills.
Eric Owens made the motion to grant permission with the coordination of staff and Parks
Superintendent Johnnie Green. The motion was seconded by Glendora Waldrup and the vote was
unanimous.

ADJOURNMENT
Chairman McNeese gave the benediction. There being no further business to conduct, the
meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
