HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-08-07 REGULAR MEETING PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD AUGUST 7, 1995 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:03 p.m. on Monday, August 7, 1995, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Leon Hogg. Other board members present were Chuck Behrns, Eric Owens, Jerry Robinson, Richard McNeese and Stephen O'Brien. Also present were visitor Frank Riley of EGSA and staff members: Parks and Leisure Services Manager Julia Wakeley, Director of Community Services Rick Herold, Parks Superintendent Johnnie Green and Parks and Leisure Services Secretary Anicia Wiltshire. INVOCATION Invocation was given by Eric Owens. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Hogg entertained a motion on the minutes from the July 12, 1995 regular meeting. Mr. McNeese motioned that the minutes be approved, Mr. Robinson seconded the motion and the motion carried. AWARDS PRESENTATION AND GUEST SPEAKER There were no awards given and no guest speaker present. OLD BUSINESS I. BOARD MEMBERS REPORTS Mr. Robinson reported that he was concerned about the lack of grass where the piping was replaced at Blessing Branch Park. Mr. Green stated that they were waiting for Code Enforcement's approval of the work that had been done, before attempting to re- grass that area. Mr. Robinson stated that Midway Park looked good except that the building had graffiti on it again. He stated he noticed new sand in the playground area. Mr. Owens reported that J.A. Carr Park looked good, especially the track, and that the roses around the gazebo were in full bloom. He stated that at Kiddie Carr Park he noticed 6-8 boys playing ball, and felt that this was a positive sign that the parks were starting to be used by the neighborhood kids. Mr. McNeese reported that with the heat, the Villages at Bear Creek Parks were not getting as much use. He stated that the area was clean and that the fields looked good. He stated that at McCormick Park a couple of lights were out, possibly from BB PALS Board Mtg 080795 page 2 gun damage. He stated that the gazebo had nails sticking out from where some standards had been kicked out, that the wood on the bottom steps was rotting and that the top step board is pulled away. Otherwise, he stated, the park looked good. Mr. Behrns stated that because of construction or repairs, his parks were decommissioned and he has no report. Chairman Hogg stated that one of the special events going on was Annie Get Your Gun and that he had taken tickets for the first weekend and that the event had been very well attended. He stated that the play is really good and volunteer help was still needed. He stated that the upcoming John Anderson Concert at City Hall will on the 26th and will have an opening band. NEW BUSINESS I. PARRS REPORT Mr. Herold handed out reports on project updates to the Tree Board and the Parks & Leisure Services Board. He stated that meetings between the Athletic Complex Committee continue with Schrickel , Rollins & Associates and that updates will be forthcoming in September. He stated that Bob Eden is still being worked on and that Midway #2 is being readied as well. He stated that Mr. Hart will present to City Council a proforma of Golf Course operations that will provide in depth information for the Council . He stated that we will hear if the Grant was accepted around Dec. 25. Mr. Herold discussed the necessity to charge for the John Anderson Concert and that to bring him back, even though the performer himself will not be paid, the crew and his band will be and that the stage will have to be rented and lighting will have to be gotten. Thus the charge for the concert. II. LEISURE SERVICES REPORT Mrs. Wakeley suggested that the members take a look at the new orchestra pit that was constructed at the amphitheater. She reported that the swimming pools had a total of 10,457 swimmers: 5000 at Midway, 2600 at South Euless and 2100 at Wilshire and all together, there were 198 children signed up for swim lessons. On July 4th free watermelon was given out to the children at Midway Morning Madness. This past month saw 779 patrons at Midway Recreation Center. Jerry Poteet went to the state track meet in Austin last weekend and his kids brought back three silver medals. She stated that he was excited and learned a lot about coaching children from this PALS Regular Meeting 080795 page 3 experience. She stated that the seniors saw the musical Texas in Canyon and that there is new air conditioning in the Simmons Center and that the heating will be finished the following week. III. BUSINESS OF THE TREE BOARD Mr. McNeese reported that an update expenditure report was unavailable. He reported that the 1+1=2 total was now at 29,839. Mr. Herold outlined ideas brought forth for the 10th year Arbor Daze Celebration. Mr. O'Brien inquired about the decision by Economic Development on the Tree Ordinance. Mr. Herold explained that it had not been modified. IV. OTHER NEW BUSINESS Mr. Riley of EGSA stated that an instructional winter softball league (Fall Ball) would take place from Sept. 9 through the second weekend in October. V. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS There were no council members present. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Hogg gave the benediction.
