HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-03-06 REGULAR MEETING PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD MARCH 6, 1995 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7: 34 p.m. on Monday, March 6, 1995, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal building by Chairman Leon Hogg. Other board members present were Richard McNeese, Lynne Moffatt, Eric Owens, Stacey Hollinger and Stephen O'Brien. Also present were Julia Wakeley, Parks and Leisure Services Manager, and Johnnie Green, Parks Superintendent. VISITORS Visitors included Mike Mathews, Terry Mutchler, Charlie Miller and Jaffar Milledge. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Stephen O'Brien. MINUTES Chairman Hogg entertained motions of the minutes from the February 6, 1995 regular meeting. Mr McNeese motioned for the minutes to be approved, Mr O'Brien seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. AWARDS PRESENTATION No awards were presented. GUEST SPEAKER There was not a guest speaker. OLD BUSINESS Mr McNeese, who is over McCormick and Villages of Bear Creek Park, stated that due to the weather, trash cans had fallen over at McCormick Park. The new amphitheater sign at Bear Creek Park looked good and other than the conditions due to the recent weather, all looked good. Mrs Moffatt stated that the amphitheater sign was a great addition. She stated that her parks looked great, empty, but that was to be expected with the weather. PALS Board Meeting 030695 page 2 Mr O'Brien stated that he had no report. Chairman Hogg reported that he did not attend the Music Shop, but was informed that there was a lot of help and a good crowd. He stated that it was a free concert with the group Cowboys and Indians, a Texas Award nominated group, performing. Mrs Wakeley stated that April's Music Shop does not have a performer contracted as of yet. NEW BUSINESS I & II: PARKS AND LEISURE SERVICES REPORT Mrs Wakeley stated the Rick Herold was at the Mosier Valley Meeting in regards to the golf course. She stated that the Senior activities group hall a 42 tournament with 16 teams participating, aerobics classes are held once a week with 16 to 17 people participating and there has been a request for water aerobics. The seniors' Gainesville shopping trip was a success as was the pool tournament. There are plans to go to Greensville. Mrs Wakeley reports that there were 44 softball teams signed up and our recreation class attendance is up 20%. Mrs Wakeley presented the entries for the poster contest. Board members and visitors viewed the entries and discussed opinions. Chairman Hogg stated that the Board is handling the Arbor Daze poster and will have a booth to sell them. The winner of the contest is awarded $500.00 and their entry will be used for the poster and t-shirts. Mrs Wakeley stated that there are 27 food and drink booths as compared to 23 from last year. She stated that the business tent is filled as well as the arts and crafts tent. Mr Green reported that the amphitheater marquee was completed. In regards to the 1/2 Penny Project, the play ground at Bob Eden Park, they poured concrete last week, and due to the weather, pulled the forms just today, using hardwood bark for safety and support. There was a re-design incorporating ADA approved walk from the parking lot to the play ground. This area would include a picnic table that is wheel chair accessible with a cooker. The surface is ADA approved for wheel chairs. There is ongoing work on several projects for figures for the upcoming month. III: REPORTS FROM SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS Mike Mathews and Terry Mutchler of the Bedford Euless Soccer Association, gave their annual report to the Board. There was also discussion in reference to a request for two lighted fields. PALS Board Meeting 030695 page 3 IV: BUSINESS OF THE TREE BOARD Mr McNeese reported that the 1+1=2 total now stands at 18,127 to date. All signs are current. Girl Scout Troop #1301 has planted 1000 bald cyprus trees to give away during Arbor Daze. Southwestern Bell has donated 6000 trees. He stated volunteers are needed to help give the trees away at Arbor Daze. He is waiting to hear from Tree City USA for re-certification. Chairman Hogg stated that at the next meeting, he and Mr McNeese will list tree board and poster board hours. V: OTHER NEW BUSINESS Chairman Hogg entertained a motion on whether to extend the poster contest deadline or to select the winner now. Mrs Moffatt moved to select now, Mr O'Brien seconded the motion and the motion carried. The posters were looked at and voted on. The winner was a poster entitled "Arbor Daze" by Chris Sly. VI: INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS Charlie Miller stated that he thought that Parks was doing a nice job and that he attended to hear the Sports Associations reports. VII: INPUT FROM VISITORS Jaffar Milledge stated that he found the meetings interesting and was pleased with the Board's choice for the Arbor Daze poster. Board members welcomed new Parks and Leisure Services secretary Anicia Wiltshire. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Hogg gave the benediction.
