PARK AID LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
SEPTEIBER 14, 1992
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Leisure Services Board was called to order
at 7: 12 PM, Monday, September 14, 1992, in the Council Chambers of the Euless
Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg. Other members present were Mrs. Bonnie
O'Brien, Messrs. Charlie Miller, Stephen O'Brien, and Eric Owens.
Also present were Rick Herold, Community Services Director; Julia Wakeley,
Parks and Leisure Services Manager; and Ann Hajek, Recording Secretary.
VISITORS
Patty McDonnell was the only visitor.

The invocation was given by Eric Owens.
RIIUTES
The minutes of the meeting dated August 03, 1992, were approved as written.
AWARDS
Julia Wakeley recommended Avona Cardona for the Volunteer of the Month Award
for all of her help in the past, especially at the Villages of Bear Creek
Grand Opening. Charlie Miller made a motion that the board award Avona
Cardona the Volunteer of the Month Award for October. Eric seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
OLD BUSIIESS
Bonnie O'Brien did not have a report.
Eric Owens said that Ruth Millican Center needed some mowing but looked fine.
He asked about plans to turn the tennis courts at South Euless into an outdoor
basketball court. Rick said this should be done within the next 10 months.
Leon Hogg did not have a report.
Stephen O'Brien did not have a report.
Charlie Miller said that McCormick Park is in good shape. He talked to a
person walking and they said McCormick Park is their favorite park in the
city. He also mentioned that this Park might be a good place for an outdoor
basketball court. Charlie said that Villages of Bear Creek looks very good.
Leon asked if staff had come up with an idea for a celebration for the Old
Iron Bridge. Rick said they would have something next month.
NEW BUSINESS
I.
PARRS REPORT
Rick thanked the Board for all of their help at the Villages of Bear Creek
Grand Opening. He said some work is still being finished at the park. The
deadline for completion is November 1.
Rick said that Terry Boaz received the City Employee of the Month Award for
August. Terry will receive a day off, a plaque, and will be eligible for
Employee of the Year.
Rick said he has been on vacation. He visited 2 national parks and 4 state
parks .
II.
LEISURE SERVICES REPORT
Building use for the month of August was as follows. Midway meeting rooms:
sports associations, 6; city, 9; rental, 2 . Gymnasium: square dance, 1;
public hearing, 1; rental, 2. Ruth Millican Center: sr. dances, 5; city, 3;
rental, 4; bridge, 4; writers, 4 . Simmons Center Rentals, 2. Simmons
Gazebo, 1. McCormick Gazebos, 1. Bob Eden Pavilion, 2.
Recreation units for the month of August were: racquetball, 243; gym, 2,891;
track, 428 ; game & snack, 1,746; weightroom, 449; Simmons, 854; RMC, 1,098 .
Pool attendance: Midway, 1,980; South Euless, 796; Wilshire, 530; for a total
of 3,306 . Total pool attendance for the summer was as follows: Midway,
11,745; South Euless, 4 ,859; Wilshire, 3,139; for a total of 19,743 .
Julia reported that we had another safe summer at the swimming pools.
Julia said that Diane Eggers is enjoying her new position with the Senior
Citizens and they seem to be having fun with her. She had a Labor Day picnic
for the seniors that they all seemed to enjoy.
The City will be awarded the Member City Award for the Texas Amateur Athletic
Federation. The Member City Award is the highest award given to a city by
TAAF. It will be presented in Austin on September 21. Ed Harrison will also
receive an award at the TAAF Conference.
Fall Athletic registration has gone well with record numbers in these areas:
67 softball teams, 10 flag football teams, and 15 coed volleyball teams.
III.
BUSINESS OF TIE TREE BOARD
Year-to-Date expenditures for Tree City, U.S.A. total $73,145.
The City of Euless has been nominated for the outstanding National Arbor Day
Celebration.
The tours at the grand opening of Villages of Bear Creek Park went well with
over 130 people participating in the tours.
Rick said that the Rotary Club wants to give the city 500, 2 1/2" trees.
IV.
BEAUTIFI EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT
Bonnie said that the berm looks very good.
Rick reported that 100 nurseries will be coming in to look at the experimental
flower bed.

INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL
None.
VI.
INPUT FROM VISITORS
Patty McDonnell from the women's soccer team Afternoon Delights expressed the
team's dissatisfaction with the Van Reit and East Midway soccer fields. Leon
said the letter sent to the city through Darell McBrayer did not designate
teams or fields, it just asked for a field. Rick said that there is a problem
with moving goals around at Westpark. They are rather heavy and they tend to
be damaged easily.
Leon said that North Texas Women's Soccer Association should contact the city
directly rather than going through Darell McBrayer. He also said that the
city should receive a portion of the field maintenance fees paid by the teams.
Charlie Miller made a motion that for this season, staff work with the
Afternoon Delights and that a certified letter from the board be sent to North
Texas Women's Soccer Association stating that next year the board would like a
formal request in writing to the Parks and Leisure Services Board concerning
usage of the fields subject to approval of the Park and Leisure Services. The
letter should also state that the city wants appropriate maintenance fees.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned at 8:07 PM
with a closing prayer by Chairman Hogg.
