REGULAR MEETING
PARK AND LEISURE SERVICES BOARD
MAY 04, 1992
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Leisure Services Board was called to order
at 7:00 PM, Monday, May 04, 1992, in the Council Chambers of the Euless
Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg. Other members present were Mrs. Bonnie
O'Brien, Messrs. Stephen O'Brien, Richard McNeese, Charlie Miller, and Jerry
Robinson.
Also present were Rick Herold, Community Services Director; Julia Wakeley,
Parks and Leisure Services Manager; and Linda Lux, Recording Secretary.
VISITORS
Visitors present included Councilman Frank Douglass and Mike Daniel.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Jerry Robinson.
MINUTES
The minutes of the meeting dated April 06, 1992, were approved as written.
OLD BUSINESS
Bonnie O'Brien has been out of town and did not have a report.
Jerry Robinson reported that Van Riet looks good.
Leon Hogg said that he visited the parks this week. He would like to have a
celebration for the Old Iron Bridge in South Euless Park.
Richard McNeese said that it looks like kids have tied a rope to a limb and
winging across the guly at South Euless Park near the old iron bridge.
Leon Hogg said that Ruth Millican Center needs mowing. He also reported
a lot of lights out at Westpark.
Jerry Robinson asked about the temporary electric pole at Del Norte. Rick
said he would check on it.
Richard McNeese reported that he walked through Bob Eden and Lakewood Parks.
Lakewood equipment is getting a lot of use. Bob Eden Park needs some work due
to high use on the weekends.
Charlie Miller said that Westpark is in good shape although parking conditions
are tight. Wilshire was in use and looks good.
Stephen O'Brien said that Midway Park was in use when he went by. Blessing
Branch needs mowing.

Jerry Robinson said he went by the Villages of Bear Creek park and there was a
lot of work going on.
Frank Douglass said an ex-Euless resident who has been gone 10 years was very
impressed with our parks system.
NEW BUSINESS
I.
PARKS REPORT
Rick said he hopes the board feels good about Arbor Daze. He feels this is
good for the community and brings everyone together -- boards, employees,
business, etc. . . . He thanked all of the board members for their help and
input on the event.
Storer Cable has contributed $9,000 to the city for a park for the handicap.
An extension has been received until August for Villages of Bear Creek park.
Rick reported that the whole botanical budget has been spent at Westpark due
to citizens requests. Citizens are very pleased with the project.
City Hall looks fine after Arbor Daze.
Other things that happened during April included baseball season opening the
same weekend as Arbor Daze and the dedication of the Bob Eden and Blackie
Sustaire memorials. Rick said that Julia did a good job of getting the HEB
Fourth Graders to Arbor Daze.
Rick said concerning the parks Master Needs List he as been looking at how to
create other facilities for expansion. Long term plans for nature trails,
jogging trails, etc. . .
Charlie Miller asked about the possibility of more Parks staff in the budget.
Rick said he would try but it will depend on the budget. He said that
possibly things can be streamlined. He said we put in for a sports package in
the budget.
Richard McNeese asked if we have any good volleyball facilities. Rick said
there are currently volleyball facilities at Del Norte.
Leon Hogg asked if facts and figures on Right-Of-Way Mowing could be given at
the work session. Rick said he would report current figures on this as well as
last year's figures.

II.
LEISURE SERVICES REPORT
Building use for the month of April was as follows. Midway Recreation Center
meeting rooms: sports associations, 11; city, 5; rental, 5; other, 1
(election). The gymnasium was used once. Ruth Millican Center: sr. dances,
4; city, 4; rental, 2; bridge, 5; writers, 5. Simmons Center: Cher, 1
(election). Bear Creek Pavilion was used 6 times.
Recreation units for the month of April were as follows: racquetball, 314;
gym, 2,834; track, 569; game & snack, 662; weightroom, 628; Simmons, 536; RMC,
814.
Julia reported that the HEB fourth-graders who formed the living tree were
very well behaved and orderly. We have received 54 letters" of thanks from the
children and schools involved in the living tree. Attendance at Arbor Daze
was over 25,000. We have had very good response on the entertainment. The
food vendors, Arts & Crafts vendors and the Business Expo vendors were all
very happy with the event.
Julia said that the pre-grand opening for the amphitheater was a great success.
Estimated attendance is 600.
The Easter Egg Hunt went very well.
Staff is gearing up for another fun summer. We will have a computer camp for
kids, more water aerobics, financial planning and stress management just to
name a few. Leisure Times should be out at the end of May.
172 Senior Citizens enjoyed activities at the Simmons Center this month. 35
seniors participated in the Spice of Life Band.
Registration is beginning for the N.C.A.A. Sanctioned Women's Summer
Basketball League and will continue through May 22. The City of Euless
registered 187 sports teams with the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. The
City of Euless is expected once again to be one of the finalists in the "TAAF
Member City Award."
Charlie Miller asked if only fourth graders are involved in the the tree
program. Julia replied yes.
Leon said that over 70,000 coupons and raffle tickets were sold at Arbor Daze.
Jerry Robinson asked how we came out on Arbor Daze. Julia said the food
concessions did very well and we will try to increase these next year. Rick
said the final figures will be out at a later date.
Julia reminded the board that the pool will open on May 30. Also, Movies in
the Park will move to Villages of Bear Creek Park this summer.

Richard McNeese reported that the tree booth at Arbor Daze was a great
success. Leon Hogg said that a woman gave a tree back to the city to plant in
a park. He would like to send her a thank you note.
Rick reported that TU Electric would like to have a tree planting as a
community service project.
Rick said that he thought the Mid-Cities Daily News did a good job of covering
Arbor Daze.
Jerry Robinson mentioned that many of his co-workers at LTV saw the Arbor Daze
signs and stopped for the event.

BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT
No report.
V.
INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS
Councilman Frank Douglass said that he was very pleased with how well the
Parks and Leisure Services Staff and the Parks and Leisure Services Board work
together.
VI.
INPUT FROM VISITORS
Mike Daniel reported that 3,500 people attended the baseball jamboree.
VII.
OTHER BUSINESS
Leon said that he would like to have a work session in June. He also reminded
the board the the Ultra Golf Classic will he held in June. Rick asked if the
work session could be held after the June meeting.
Charlie Miller said that the Parks and Leisure Services Staff did a tremendous
job with Arbor Daze. Leon said that over 797 hours from Parks Dept. only were
put in for Arbor Daze. He would like Diane Eggers volunteer hours reported at
each meeting.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned at 8:28 PM
with a closing prayer by Chairman Hogg.
