HomeMy WebLinkAbout1991-12-02 REGULAR MEETING PARK AND RECREATION BOARD DECEMBER 02, 1991 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:05 PM, Monday, December 02, 1991, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg. Other members present were Messrs. Charles Miller, Richard McNeese, Jerry Robinson; and Eric Owens. Also present were Rick Herold, Community Services Director; Julia Wakeley, Parks and Leisure Services Manager; and Ann Hajek, Recording Secretary. VISITORS Visitors included Mike Daniel, Mike McNamara, and Frank Fletcher. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Charlie Miller. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated November 04, 1991 were approved as written. OLD BUSINESS Charlie Miller reported that Midway and Blessing Branch are both in good shape. Basketball has gotten off to a good start at Midway. Richard McNeese said that his parks, Del Norte and Van Riet, had little activity but they look fine. Soccer is finished which may explain why the parks have little activity. Leon Hogg reported that Westpark and Wilshire look good but that at this time of year they do not receive much use. Jerry Robinson said that his parks are Oakwood Terrace, J.A. Carr Park, and Kiddie Carr Park. He stated that he walked the track at J.A. Carr Park and found it to be in good shape. He did notice one shopping cart in the creek. Leon said that park assignments will be changed in January. Leon also reported that at the last City Council meeting the sports associations were given three options concerning the proposed field use fees: - Pay the $3.00 fee as proposed. - Pay labor costs as incurred and pay for material. - Line the fields themselves and buy the material. LEISURE SERVICES REPORT Julia said that the annual dinner for the board and their spouses, which is usually held in December, will be held January 6 at Midway Recreation Center. Building use for the month of November was as follows: Midway Recreation Center Meeting Rooms: sports associations, 8; city usage, 8; rental, 1; other, 2 (election). The gymnasium was used 2 times: square dance and Boards and Commissions Dinner. Ruth Millican Center: Senior Dances, 5; City Usage, 2; Rental, 1; Writer's Guild, 4. Simmons Center had one rental. Bear Creek Pavilion was used 3 times and J.A. Carr Gazebo was used 1 time. Recreation units for the month of November were as follows: racquetball, 436; gym, 2,542; track, 482; game & snack, 451; weightroom, 891; RMC, 718, SIM, 608. Starting December 16 a bridge group will begin using Ruth Millican Center. In January another bridge group will also start using Ruth Millican Center. The first annual Midway Recreation Center racquetball tournament will be held December 6 and 7. Registration for basketball has concluded. The City of Euless registered the second most basketball teams in T.A.A.F. Region 4, with 28 teams. The Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Dinner was held on November 22 at the Ruth Millican Center. The event consisted of a dinner theater with the entertainment provided by the Parks and Leisure Services staff performing a radio drama in front of the audience. Over 120 seniors came to enjoy the evening. Units for November were as follows: regular meetings, 133; Monday meetings, 25; Spice of Life, 42. Frank Fletcher told the board that attendance at the Saturday night dances has improved. The trip to Marshall is scheduled for December 9 and 10. II. PARKS REPORT Rick reported that a few weeks ago a few members of the Parks Department attended the National Trails Symposium at which they were guest speakers. This symposium was on a Thursday and a Friday in Austin. On the same Friday they had to drive to Tyler early in the morning for a presentation they had been invited to concerning 1 + 1 = 2. Julia has put together a 1 + 1 = 2 coloring book. Diane Eggers is the new Volunteer Coordinator for the city. The board should be meeting her in the next few months. Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes •" December 02, 1991 Page 3 This is the time of year that horticulture crews will be busy. There is also a lot of construction done this time of year. The rain has slowed down construction at the Villages of Bear Creek a bit. The tree grants from Texas Forestry Service were received in the mail. 500 trees have been received from the Rotary Club. Rick said that Julia has been working on the largest living tree project. She will use over 500 children for the tree. III. BUSINESS OF THE TREE BOARD Richard McNeese reported that the Parks Department has gathered Red Oak, Sweet Gum, Chinese Pistache and Golden Rain Tree seeds to grow for next year's stock. Also, replacement trees have been planted at Trailwood, Bear Creek Parkway, City Hall, Fair Oaks, and the Recreation Building. Richard reported that it is time to prepare the Tree City USA application. IV. BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT Leon invited the board to help with a membership push for BEE in February. IV. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS None. V. INPUT FROM VISITORS Frank Fletcher told Rick that the floor at RMC is in very good shape. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned at 7:27 PM with a prayer by Chairman Hogg. /.
