PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
MAY 06, 1991
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at
7:00 P.M. , Monday, May 06, 1991, in the Council Chambers of the Euless
Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg. Other members present were Mrs. Bonnie
O'Brien, Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Messrs. Jerry Robinson, Richard McNeese,
Stephen O'Brien, and Charles Miller (alternate) .
Also present were Rick Herold, Director of Community Services; Julia Wakeley,
Parks and Leisure Services Manager; and Ann Hajek, Recording Secretary.
VISITORS
Visitors present included Mrs. Jan Hogg, Mrs. Janene Boyle, Mrs. Avona
Cardona, and Mr. and Mrs. Kendall Hogg.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Mr. Charles Miller.
MINIMS
The minutes of the regular meeting dated April 01, 1991 were approved as
written.
AWARDS PRESENTATION
Richard McNeese presented Jan Hogg with the Volunteer of the Month award for
all of her hard work throughout the years.
OLD BUSINESS
Stephen O'Brien reported that his areas are Bear Creek and Lakewood. He asked
if there will ever be a foot bridge across the low lying spot at Bear Creek.
Rick said he would look into it. He also reported that it looks like there
are some new trees at Bear Creek. In addition, he said, his children
thoroughly enjoy Lakewood park.
Helen Lightbody reported that Westpark has been very busy. The new paved area
looks good.
Jerry Robinson said that he enjoyed Leisure Faire despite the rain.
Leon Hogg said that Midway Park is well used.
Volunteer hours for Leisure Faire total 1,316.
Richard said that his areas are J.A. Carr Park and Oakwood Terrace. He
reported that J.A. Carr park is always busy. Simmons center held their grand
opening April 25.

Bonnie O'Brien said that South Euless and Ruth Millican Center both look good.
Charlie Miller reported that Villages of Bear Creek looks fine. A tree has
blown over from the creek at McCormick Park and is almost on the path. Also a
branch on another tree is growing quite low near the playground. Rick said
he would look into it.
NEW BUSINESS
I.
PARKS REPORT
Rick Herold reported that fertilizer has been spread in all of the parks.
He said that Fort Worth Star Telegram readers voted Euless City Hall the best
landscaped area in Tarrant County. It will be in this Sunday's paper.
He thanked the board for manning the Park and Tree Board booths at Leisure
Faire. He said that over 50% of the Leisure Faire visitors were Euless
residents but that some were from as far away as Louisiana, Illinois and South
Carolina.
Rick also reported that visitors to the faire heard about it from the following
sources: Flyers, 33%; newspapers, 31%; word of mouth, 24%; other, 23%; radio,
16%; poster, 11%.
Bids were opened for Villages of Bear Creek. They will be awarded at the
next council meeting.
II.
LEISURE SERVICES REPORT
Julia Wakeley reported that Midway Recreation Center had the following
building use for the month of April. Multi-Purpose Room: rentals, 9; city
usage, 9; sports associations, 13; tax assistance, 2; T.O.P.S. , 4; job fair,l.
Gymnasium: square dance, 1; senior's dance, 1; lawn and garden show, 3 days.
Other use for Midway Recreation Center was as follows: racquetball, 396;
track, 593; game & snack are, 393; gymnasium, 2,494. Leisure Faire had 10,000
units.
Building use for Ruth Millican Center had the following uses: Square Dance,
3; City usage, 2; bridge, 9; seniors, 8. Ruth Millican Center had 772
recreation units.
Bear Creek Pavilion was used 6 times. The gazebo at J.A. Carr park was used 5
times. Simmons center had 60 recreation units.
Bonnie O'Brien said that the seniors all are very appreciative of the
renovation at Simmons Center. Julia said that proceeds from the 1990 Ultra
went toward buying the new piano for the seniors.
Leisure Times will be mailed out later this month. Class registration will

run from May 20 through June 1.
The Spice of Life band performed 5 times in April.
Eighty-two adult softball teams have registered for the 1991 Spring season.
Euless Girls Softball registered 21 teams. This gives Euless 103 T.A.A.F.
registered softball teams, the first time Euless has registered over 100
softball teams.
The 10k has been rescheduled for June 8.
Upcoming summer activities include the N.C.A.A. Sanctioned Women's Summer
Basketball League, which will play Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings
beginning June 17. Also, the H.E.B. Youth Track Team will meet Monday through
Friday at Central Jr. High beginning June 3.
Swimming pools will open Saturday, June 1 with "Splash Day" and free admission
for the day.
III.
BUSINESS OF THE TREE BOARD
Richard McNeese said that the year-to-date expenditures for Tree City USA will
be updated next month.
He also reported that almost 4,000 trees have been given to area residents
through the 1 + 1 = 2 program.
Richard pointed out the first edition of "Tree Talk", the newsletter for
1 + 1 = 2 members.
Richard showed the board the proclamation from City Council recognizing Arbor
Day.
Leon mentioned to Richard that we need volunteer for the booth at HEB
Festival.

Mr. Kendall Hogg inquired about the lights at the South Euless tennis courts.
Rick said those are no longer being maintained.
VII.
FURTHER BUSINESS
A discussion was held on the new indoor soccer arena. Comments were made that
Euless has many excellent recreation opportunities.
Jerry Robinson said he had heard a lot of good comments on the new city limit
signs.

Leon Hogg: Westpark and Wilshire
Helen Lightbody: South Euless and Ruth Millican Center
Bonnie O'Brien: Special Events
Jerry Robinson: JA Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park, Oakwood Terrace
Richard McNeese: Van Riet and Del Norte
Bill Tarin: Bear Creek and Lakewood
Stephen O'Brien: McCormick and Villages of Bear Creek
Charlie Miller: Midway Park and Blessing Branch
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned at 7:54 PM
with a closing prayer by Chairman Hogg.
