REGULAR MEETING
PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
APRIL 01, 1991
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at
7:00 P.M. , Monday, April 01, 1991, in the Council Chambers of the Euless
Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg.` Other members present were Mrs. Bonnie
O'Brien,'--Messrs. Bill Tarin,` Jerry Robinson; Richard McNeese, and Charles
Miller.
Also present were Rick Herold, Director of Community Services; Julia Wakeley,
Parks and Leisure Services Manager; and Ann Hajek, Recording Secretary.
VISITORS
Visitors present were Mr. Jack Hill and Mr. Todd Smith.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Mr. Bill Tarin.
MINUTES
The minutes of the regular meeting dated March 04, 1991 were approved as
written.
OLD BUSINESS
Bill Tarin said that Van Riet and Del Norte look good. He asked Rick if the
road leading to Van Riet from Fuller-Wiser will ever be paved. Rick said the
owner doesn't want it paved but the county periodically puts oil on it.
Charlie Miller reported that McCormick Park is in excellent shape. He asked
if, at Villages of Bear Creek, where the path comes close to the creek, if
some type of barrier will be put up. Rick said the path will be moved farther
away from the creek.
Jerry Robinson reported that the Villages of Bear Creek groundbreaking was
well attended. He missed the Leisure Faire Kickoff Luncheon but heard it went
well. He said he also missed the Senior's Dances but understands they went
well also.
Leon said that Midway is looking good, as does Blessing Branch. All the parks
have been well used. He has received the information on Volunteer Hours but
will have to get them in order and will report on them at a later date.
Richard reported that J.A. Carr Park and Oakwood Terrace look good. J.A. Carr
Park has a lot of walkers and joggers. The playground gets a lot of use.
Richard asked if the pavilion at Kiddie Carr Park is going to be moved. Rick
said it has been discussed but there is no time table on it right now.
Richard also said that things are collecting in the creek due to spring rains.
Rick said the new drainage utility district may help with some of this ongoing
problem.

Bonnie O'Brien reported that her parks are South Euless and Ruth Millican
Center. The parks look quite inviting. They are both clean and green.
NEW BUSINESS
I.
LEISURE SERVICES REPORT
Building use for the month of March for Midway Recreation Center was as
follows: Multi Purpose Room - Rentals, 3; Sports Associations, 24; Tax
Service, 4; City Usage, 6. The Don't Bag It Program and one Senior Dance were
held in the gym. Building use for Ruth Millican Center: Senior Citizen
Dances, 2; Umpires, 3; Square Dancers, 4; Bridge, 8; Seniors, 8. Bear Creek
Pavilion was used 7 times.
Attendance for the month of March was as follows: Racquetball, 519; Gym,
3,218; Track, 747; Game/Snack, 682; Weightroom, 681; Little Lad's Shindig,
20; Pediatric CPR, 15; Preschool Casa Manana, 35; Easter Egg Hunt, 300.
Julia reported that the Don't Bag It meeting was quite a success.
The Senior's have had three dances. It has been so successful that it has
been moved to the gym from Ruth Millican. We will try to have three a month.
The cookbooks are in and will be sold for $5.00. The Senior Bake Sale raised
$256.00 toward their summer trip. Also, the seniors were visited by children
from the First Academy on March 14. The children brought flowers and Easter
baskets. Attendance at Senior Events was as follows: Bingo, 7; Movie, 4;
General Meetings, 148. The Spice of Life Band performed 4 times.
Registration for adult softball is at 71 teams with one day of registration
left. One Euless men's volleyball team has advanced to the T.A.A.F. State
tournament.
II.
PARKS REPORT
Rick thanked the board for coming to the Villages of Bear Creek
Groundbreaking.
He said that Euless' Don't Bag It meeting drew the largest crowd ever to
attend a Don't Bag It program in the state. 25 demonstration yards will be
started in the city.
Response to Experts Day on April 12 has been great. Experts from across the
country will be there.
Rick, Jimmy Beck and Nick Mitchell will be going to Austin to the State
Forestry Conference to present the 1 + 1 = 2 program.
Jerry Robinson asked where the driving range will be located. Rick said that
a feasibility study is being done on the property on Hwy. 10 where the used
car company used to be located and the land adjacent to that.

Leon asked Rick to congratulate John Ledbetter and Jerry Massey on their state
certificates regarding Chemical application.
III.
DISCUSSION OF LEISURE FAIRE '91
Julia said that so far everything seems to be on target. The weather is about
all that could stand in our way.
Leon said that the showguides are in.
Rick said that VIP passes will be mailed to the board members.
IV.
BUSINESS OF THE TREE BOARD
Richard said that a lot of exciting things are going on. He reported that
Don't Bag It had a tremendous turn out. 285 Loblolly Pine Trees were given
out.
Year-to-date expenditures for Tree City U.S.A. are $23,135.00
750 trees will be given away at Leisure Faire.
Rick said Tree Talk will be out next month.
Leon encouraged board members to join the 1 + 1 = 2 program.
Richard reported that the Tree City U.S.A. Award for 1990 was presented to
Council on March 26.
V.
FURTHER BUSINESS
Julia said the Leisure Faire Kickoff Luncheon went well. All of the sponsors
except for KLIF were present. Also Mary Lib Saleh, Peter Staks, Frank
Douglass, Bonnie O'Brien, and Leon Hogg were there. The marketing plan was
discussed and sponsors were given a better idea of where their advertising
dollars are going.

INPUT FROM VISITORS
Jack Hill and Todd Smith both expressed their appreciation for the hard work
of the Park Board and the Park and Leisure Services Department.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned at 7:56 P.M.
with a closing prayer by Chairman Hogg.
