HomeMy WebLinkAbout1990-11-05 REGULAR MEETING PARK AND RECREATION BOARD NOVEMBER 05, 1990 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:04 PM, Monday, November 05, 1990, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg. Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mssrs. Richard McNeese " Jerry Robinson, and Bill Tarin` (alternate). Also present were Rick Herold, Community Services Director, Julia Wakeley, Parks and Leisure Services Manager, and Ann Hajek, Recording Secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mr. Richard McNeese. VISITORS Visitors included George and Dottie McKinney and Marge Crow. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated October 01, 1990 were approved as written. AWARDS PRESENTATION Mrs. Dottie McKinney and Mrs. Marge Crow were each presented with a plaque for their volunteer work and accomplishments with the BEE Committee. VIDEO PRESENTATION The board viewed a videotape of Leisure Faire '90. Afterwards, Rick Herold said that the fair will run three days this year. Tentative dates are April 12, 13, and 14. He also said that the three-time grammy award winning band, Asleep At The Wheel, is scheduled to play at the fair on April 14. OLD BUSINESS Helen Lightbody said that she has seen a lot of activity at Midway Center. Jerry Robinson said that South Euless looks good. He asked about painting the trim on Ruth Millican Center. Rick said he would ask Facilities Maintenance about it. Leon Hogg reported that the year-to-date volunteer hours are 3,368 1/2 for a savings (at $5.00 per hour) of $16,842.50. He also said that new parks assignments will be given in January. Richard McNeese reported that the two special events coming up are the Boards and Commissions Dinner on November 12 and the Senior Citizen's Dinner Theater on November 16. Park and Recreation Board Meeting November 05, 1990 Page 2 Bill Tarin reported that his areas are Oakwood Terrace, J.A. Carr Park and Kiddie Carr Park. He said that J.A. Carr park is beautiful this time of year. He added that Oakwood Terrace is in good shape. NEW BUSINESS I. PARKS REPORT Rick Herold reported that BEE had a nice dinner. He said that the Capital Improvements Package was approved by City Council with two small revisions. Money for trash cans was cut from $20,000 to $5,000. Also, the plan to pave the parking areas at the Villages of Bear Creek was turned down. The new "Welcome to Euless" signs will premiere November 6. The 1 + 1 = 2 stickers are in. The logo should be back anyday. Rick asked for the board's approval on having large canvas bags printed as another 1 + 1 = 2 project. Also, Donna Hibbits of the school district has approved 1 + 1 = 2 in the schools. This should kick off sometime this month. Also, Rick said that he would like for the board to hand out trees at their booth in Leisure Faire this year. Citizens of Euless will get a free tree if they will sign a tree treaty promising to plant the tree in Euless. Finally, Rick asked the board if they would like to hold their December meeting at Midway Recreation Center where they and their spouses could also have dinner. The board was agreeable to this. II. LEISURE SERVICES REPORT Julia said she and Rick had a great time in Phoenix at the National Recreation and Parks Association Convention. They came back with many new and innovative ideas. Building attendance for the month of October was as follows. Midway Recreation Center: Racquetball, 404; Gym, 2,017; Track, 456; Game and Snack Area, 468; Blood Drive, 55. The multi-purpose room was used 3 times by the city and 9 times by various sports associations. The dance room was used once for a meeting and the arts & crafts room was used twice for meetings. Ruth Millican Center: two city uses for 60 units and 5 rentals for 500 units. Simmons Center had 320 units for bridge and 621 units for seniors. Bear Creek Pavilion was reserved 11 times and McCormick Gazebo was reserved one time. Fall session I classes concluded November 2 with registration for fall session II from October 31 through November 9 with new classes beginning on November 12. A blood drive was held October 26 at Midway Recreation Center. 55 people participated. Next year, the blood drive will be held in conjunction with the city benefits fair. Park and Recreation Board Meeting November 05, 1990 Page 3 The 2nd Annual "Club Ritz" will be held November 16 at Ruth Millican Center. Next month the seniors will be visiting the Omni Theater and the Arlington Arts & Crafts Fair. The band performed 5 times last month. Softball season finishes November 5. A tournament is scheduled at Bear Creek Park and Midway #2 to benefit T.J. Griffin, the Trinity football player who was paralyzed in a game 4 weeks ago. The Parks and Leisure Services Department is donating the fields and their preparation costs for this cause. The Volleyball and Flag Football Leagues will conclude in the next two weeks. Basketball registration will conclude November 8. The Leisure Services staff will be cooking the Employee Christmas Luncheon. III. BUSINESS OF THE TREE BOARD Richard McNeese reported that year-to-date expenditures for Tree City U.S.A. total $68,381.48. The recertification documentation will be complete in the next week or so. Rick asked the board for their recommendation on the canvas tote bags. The bags will cost us $3.50 each and we can sell them for $6.00 each. 250 would be a good number to order the first time. Bill Tarin made a motion that the board recommend that the bags be ordered. Jerry Robinson seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. IV. FURTHER BUSINESS The board discussed a date for the Appreciation Dinner and decided that sometime in February would be good. Leon Hogg asked staff to study this and make a recommendation at the next meeting. Rick reminded the board of the Christmas Tree Lighting. V. BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT Helen Lightbody said that the BEE Committee is busy working on Christmas decorations and the tree recycling program. VI. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS None. VII.
