HomeMy WebLinkAbout1990-10-01 REGULAR MEETING PARK AND RECREATION BOARD OCTOBER 01, 1990 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:02 PM, Monday, October 01, 1990, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg. Other member present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien` (alternate), Messrs. Richard McNeese, Ron Henson,' and Jerry Robinson. Also present were Rick Herold, Community Services Director, and Ann Hajek, Recording Secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mr. Richard McNeese. VISITORS Mike Daniels, Euless Athletic Association Commissioner, was present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated September 10, 1990 were approved as written. OLD BUSINESS Mrs. Helen Lightbody reported that Midway Recreation Center looks good. Mr. Jerry Robinson said that his parks look fine. Mr. Leon Hogg reported that his parks look good. He will report on volunteer hours next month. Mr. Richard McNeese reported that the Ultra Golf Tournament is coming up. Mr. Ron Henson reported that Van Reit and Del Norte look good. Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien said that Westpark looks good. She did not make it by Wilshire. She said that the extra trail at J.A. Carr park looks great and should get a lot of use. NEW BUSINESS I. LEISURE SERVICES REPORT Building usage for the month of September was as follows: Midway Recreation Center - Racquetball, 625; Gym, 2,972; Track, 603; Game & Snack, 732; Weight Room, 705; Gym Rental, 1; Multi-purpose Rental, 4; Multi-purpose other use, 8. The city health fair was also held in the gym. Simmons had 4 rentals and 1 other use. RMC had 2 rentals and 1 other use. J.A. Carr park gazebo was used twice. McCormick Gazebo was used once. Bear Creek Pavilion was used 5 times. There was 1 pool rental. Rick discussed the possibilities of renovating Ruth Millican Center, using . Park and Recreation Board Meeting October 01, 1990 Page 2 in-house labor, to increase rentals at the facility. Class registration for fall classes is currently going on. Ninety percent of the classes have made. Crafts are doing especially well. The seniors will be going to the State Fair. Tim Rolen is the new Senior Citizen Coordinator. Flag Football is underway at Westpark. Softball continues through October. Volleyball will begin soon with 9 teams. Registration for basketball will begin October 29. Euless was awarded the T.A.A.F. Women's Church State Tournament at the T.A.A.F. Convention. The tournament will be played July 12 & 13. Rick said that Andy Tarkington is now the T.A.A.F. District Director. II. PARKS REPORT Rick said that the city's fiscal year starts today. The city has gone to a new pay structure that should work well for city employees. Rick asked the board if they would be willing to write a letter to the parks employees that have not missed a day. Rick reported that he, Julia Wakeley, and Jerry Crane will be going to Phoenix for the National Recreation and Park Convention. A discussion of the Villages of Bear Creek Park was held. Rick explained a map and plans of the park. Rick presented a draft schedule for the Parks Capital Improvement Package. This will all be done with in-house labor. This proposal will go to City Council on October 16. We can make changes on this until October 14. Rick presented three logos for the 1 + 1 = 2 program. Rick also told the board that we will receive $5,000 funding from the Community Betterment Fund plus 50% of anything over $2,300 per month. Ron Henson made a motion that the board recommend to council the draft schedule for the parks Capital Improvement Package. Jerry Robinson seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously. Discussion was held on the logo for the 1 + 1 = 2 program. Jerry Robinson made a motion to accept logo #2 (trees incorporated with the city logo). Bonnie O'Brien seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously. III. BUSINESS OF THE TREE BOARD Richard McNeese reported that year-to-date expenses for the Tree City requirements total $60,006.48. BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT The next meeting of the BEE Committee will be October 8. V. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL None. VI. INPUT FROM VISITORS Mike Daniels, Euless Athletic Association Commissioner, introduced himself to the board. Volunteer opportunities were discussed. Leon asked that EAA turn in hours on volunteers working in their association so that we may include these hours in our volunteer hours and perhaps even recognize them through Volunteer of the Month.
