PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
AUGUST 06, 1990
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at
7:00 PM, Monday, August 06, 1990, in the Council Chambers of the Euless
Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg. Other members present were Mrs. Helen
Lightbody,`Messrs. Ron Henson,' Jerry Robinson, and Marland Ernest. -
Also present were Rick Herold, Community Services Director; Julia Wakeley,
Park and Leisure Services Manager; and Ann Hajek, Recording Secretary.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Mrs. Helen Lightbody.
VISITORS
Visitors present were Councilmembers Mary Lib Saleh and Peter Staks, Mrs.
Doris Herold, Dr. and Mrs. Don Bailey, and Bedford Park and Recreation Board
members Sharon Hileman, Kay Bunker, Leahmon Chambers, Ben Loflan, and Paul
Kuhar.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the regular meeting dated July 02, 1990 were approved as
written.
AWARDS PRESENTATION
Mrs. Doris Herold was awarded the Volunteer of the Month award for all of her
volunteer service.
SPEAKER
Dr. Don Bailey from the University of North Texas spoke on the value of
college sports.
OLD BUSINESS
BOARD MEMBERS REPORTS
Helen Lightbody reported that Midway Park and Blessing Branch both look good.
Jerry Robinson reported that South Euless and Ruth Millican Center both look
good.
Leon Hogg said that his parks were McCormick and Villages of Bear Creek. He
reported that Villages of Bear Creek is coming along well.
Currently there are approximately 3,000 volunteer hours for the year-to-date.

Ron Henson did not have a report.
Marland Ernest reported that his parks look great. He mentioned that it
looked like new trees have been planted. Marland also mentioned that the
planters along North Main look very good.
NEW BUSINESS
I.
LEISURE SERVICES REPORT
Julia Wakeley reported that attendance for the month of July was as follows:
Racquetball 473; Gym 4,084; Track & Game Area 1,868; Weight Room 492; Simmons
480; Midway Pool 3,735; South Euless Pool 1,781; Wilshire Pool 670. Simmons
had three rentals and one gazebo reservation. Bear Creek Pavilion was used
four times. Ruth Millican Center was used once. There were three pool
rentals. The Multi-Purpose Room was used five times for city functions and
once by EAA. The gym was used once by square dancers.
Two Movies-in-the-Park were shown with an attendance of 400 at each one.
Julia said that the after school proposal has been accepted by the school
district.
The City of Euless along with Hurst and Bedford hosted the T.A.A.F. regional
track meet. There were over 500 participants and 57 will go to the state
tournament. August 11 and 12 we will host a coed softball tournament.
N.C.A.A. Women's Summer Basketball league will end August 9. Fall softball
has begun. Registration for Flag Football will start this month.
Registration for the last session of summer classes will finish August 4. We
have over 300 participants.
The seniors will be going to Amarillo later this month. They had a bake sale
to raise some of the money needed for the trip. The kitchen band played four
times last month.
Julia also reported that Jase Waller, a city lifeguard, was named among the
Outstanding Young Men of America.
II.
PARKS REPORT
Rick Herold reported that the Parks Department has gone for over seven months
without a worker's compensation claim.
Rick reported that the Villages of Bear Creek has received the endorsement of
the Villages Homeowners Association with a few changes.
Midway #2 was used last week for a softball tournament and will be used again
this weekend for another one.

Rick invited the board to tour the greenhouse to see all of the refurbishing
that has occured.
Rick reported that he has been approached by a new soccer organization that
would like to use our fields. He said that he would like to meet with the
board to discuss this issue.
Rick, Nick and Jimmy will be visiting the Texas Association of Nurserymen
Convention for a day.
Rick said he feels very positive about the budget.
He also mentioned that he will be attending a meeting in Dallas to discuss
strategy in budget cuts.
III.
DISCUSSION OF 1 + 1 = 2
Rick explained the basics of this program to visitors at the meeting.
IV.
BUSINESS OF THE TREE BOARD
Ron Henson made a motion to present the 1 + 1 = 2 program to the City Council
with a recommendation for approval. Marland Ernest seconded the motion. The
motion passed unanimously.
V.
BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT
None.
VI.
INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS
Councilmember Mary Lib Saleh said that the flowers throughout the city are
beautiful.
She mentioned that the City Council has approved a program of displaying a
sign of "Your Tax Dollars At Work For You" any time improvements are being
done.
She also said that she appreciates members of the Park Board attending council
meetings. Leon Hogg mentioned that the trail at Wilshire school has been
approved.
Councilmember Saleh reported that the Texas Municipal League Region 8 meeting
will be held at Midway Recreation Center.
She also mentioned that managers throughout the city have been asked to
participate in Code Enforcement Week by looking at one quadrant of the city

and recommending any violations to Code Enforcement. She would like the
Park and Recreation Board's support and help in this program.
Councilmember Peter Staks commended the board for their innovativeness. He
said that he thought it was important that city sites be cleaned up while we
are trying to encourage the citizens to clean up during Code Enforcement week.
VII.
VISITORS
A discussion of various issues was held with members of the Bedford Park and
Recreation Board.
VIII.
OTHER BUSINESS
Marland Ernest mentioned that Dottie McKinney would be a good candidate for
the Volunteer of the Month award. Helen Lightbody recommended Marge Crow for
this award.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM
with a closing prayer by Chairman Hogg.
