HomeMy WebLinkAbout1990-06-04 REGULAR MEETING PARK AND RECREATION BOARD JUNE 04, 1990 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:08 PM, Monday, June 04, 1990, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Hogg.` Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien (alternate), Messrs. Marland Ernest, Ron Henson, Richard McNeese, Jerry Robinson, and Bill Tarin (alternate). Also present were Rick Herold, Community Services Director; Julia Wakeley, Park and Leisure Services Manager; and Ann Hajek, Recording Secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Richard McNeese. VISITORS Visitors present included Gary Barber, Michael Barber, David Barber and Marge Crow. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated May 07, 1990 were approved as written. AWARDS PRESENTATION Members of the Northeast Community Relations Team were presented with a letter and T-shirt for their volunteer work on Leisure Faire '90. OLD BUSINESS BOARD MEMBERS REPORTS Bill Tarin said his parks look good. Bonnie O'Brien said her parks look great. Helen Lightbody reported that her parks look good. Jerry Robinson said that his parks also look great. Leon Hogg reported that he has not received volunteer hours for this month. So far, he only has 36 hours to report this month which brings the year-to-date total to a little over 3,000. Leon said that his parks, Bear Creek and Lakewood, look great. Richard McNeese said that Ruth Millican Center and South Euless Parks look good and are starting to see more activity. Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes June 04, 1990 Page 2 Ron Henson said that J.A. Carr Park has a lot of activity. He said the parks look great. Marland Ernest said that the parks look great. He commended park employee, Cary, for carefully picking up trash before mowing. TREE BOARD REPORT Expenditures for the month of May totalled $2,738 which brings the year-to- date total to $19,998. 14 trees were planted in May which accounted for about 50% of the monthly expenditures. NEW BUSINESS I. LEISURE SERVICES REPORT Julia Wakeley reported that Midway Recreation Center received 21 usages outside of regular classes for the month of May. Ruth Millican Center was used six times. Simmons was used two times. Bear Creek pavilion was used 14 times. The gazebo was used two times. This is a total of 45 for the month of May. The N.C.A.A. Basketball League has 20 teams registered. Splash day was Saturday, June 2. Registration for Coed Sandlot Softball is currently being held. Registration for summer classes is being held. Peter Krause is doing an internship programming with the Seniors. He took them to Tyler last month. They are planning on putting together another cookbook. He is also going to hold a 1920's film festival. Also, another dinner theater will be held in a few months. Movies In The Park will begin June 8 at J.A. Carr Park. A survey has been conducted in two schools for the latchkey program. Ninety forms were returned by interested parents. The program looks very promising. II. PARKS REPORT Rick Herold reported that Julia officially opened the renovated Midway Pool with a backflip while breaking the ribbon. Dan Dearborn is leaving the parks department. There are now two positions to be filled. The Working Connection will be sending ten people to work for the parks this summer. They will be working at the Villages of Bear Creek. Their primary responsibility will be to clean the Park. Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes June 04, 1990 Page 3 All of the landscaping for Midway Pool was done in four days. Johnny Green should be commended for his efforts on this project. The bond issue may be put off until January. The City of Euless has received the Keep Texas Beautiful Litter Getter award. Construction on Hwy. 10 has begun. The department only had 48 hours to get the right-of-ways cleared. Bonnie O'Brien inquired about getting sponsors for picnic tables and trash cans. Marland said that such a project has been successful in Austin. A discussion was held. This item will be on next month's agenda. Rick thanked Leon and Ron for going to Houston to accept the Texas Urban Forestry Award. The new sandbox at Midway Pool hopefully will be used by the small kids. III. OTHER BUSINESS Bedford Parks and Recreation Board is interested in working more closely with the City of Euless Parks and Recreation Board on certain projects. Leon will be going to their next meeting. If anyone would like to go they are welcome. IV. 1 + 1 = 2 Marland Ernest made a motion that the Tree Board be the coordinating group for this program. Jerry Robinson seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. V. BEAUTIFY EULE'SS EVERYDAY REPORT Marge Crow reported that the City of Euless placed third in the Governor's Community Achievement Award. She would like to send a letter of appreciation to volunteers that help clean the right-of-ways. The committee will soon be selecting new officers for the coming year. VI.
