HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-05-01 REGULAR MEETING PARK AND RECREATION BOARD MAY 01, 1989 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:04 P.M. , Monday, May 01, 1989, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Ernest. Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh, Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien (alternate), Messrs. Ron Henson, Richard McNeese, Leon Hogg, and Jerry Robinson (alternate). Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick Herold, Park Director; Jay Heilman, Director of Community Services; Lynn Shackelford, Director of Administrative Services; Jim Hickerson, Assistant City Manager; and Ann Hajek, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mr. Leon Hogg. VISITORS Visitors attending the meeting were Messrs. David Pryseski, Sonny Gonzalez, Bill Kirkley and Mrs. Jan Hogg. The Board presented Julia Wakeley and Rick Herold with the Volunteer of the Month Award. Mr. Leon Hogg stated that although they are paid employees of the city they still contribute many volunteer hours to the city. He mentioned that the Board wanted to show Julia and Rick that they appreciate the volunteer hours they put in. Board members and visitors expressed their appreciation to Julia and Rick. Mr. Lynn Shackelford, Director of Administrative Services, reported that he has the keys to the new recreation center. Building completion is very close. Furniture has been ordered and telephones are being put in. The landscaping and sprinkler system will be put in by the Parks Department. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated April 03, 1989 were approved as written. OLD BUSINESS BOARD MEMBERS REPORTS Mr. Leon Hogg reported that his parks look good. He mentioned that he had met a couple from Hurst using Lakewood Park. He stated that he was glad people from Hurst were driving to Euless to use our parks instead of our people driving to Hurst to use their parks. Leon reported that the BEE Committee had 577 volunteer hours for the month. The Working Connection donated 3,800 hours. The Trash Off had 520 hours. Park and Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes May 01, 1989 Page 2 Recreation Board had a total of 15 hours. The Ultra Golf Tournament accounted for 260 hours. Highway 10 had 52 hours. How-To-Grow Lawn and Garden Show had 162 hours. The year to date total of dollar amount to the city ($5.00 per hour) is $29,062.50. Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien reported that her parks are in great shape as usual. Mr. Jerry Robinson inquired about repair on the roof of Bear Creek Pavilion. Mr. Rick Herold said it has been discussed and will be done shortly. Mrs. Helen Lightbody reported that there has not been much activity at Villages of Bear Creek Park or McCormick Park but she is looking forward to lots of activity in the future. Helen mentioned that the Ultra Golf Tournament was very successful as was the How-To-Grow Lawn and Garden Show. Mr. Richard McNeese reported that there has not been much activity at Blessing Branch Park. At Midway Park everything was in use other than the swimming pool and the Recreation Center. Everything looks well maintained. Mr. Marland Ernest reported that his two areas of responsibility are Van Reit and Del Norte. Both are well maintained and well groomed. Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh reported that there has been a lot of activity at all the parks. She mentioned the possibility of putting a golf range in at Bear Creek as a lot of people are hitting golf balls there. Mary Lib further reported that she had been on a tour of the new Recreation Center with Lynn Shackelford. It looks wonderful and should be a highlight for the City. Special Events for May are Lion's Pride 10k on May 29 and the Senior Games of Texas the week of May 17. Jerry Robinson and Bonnie O'Brien are the representatives for the Lion's Pride 10k and Ron Henson is the representative for the Senior Games. Mr. Ron Henson reported that his areas of responsibility are Wilshire and Westpark. They are both in good shape. He stated that he and Jay Heilman had been to a tree seminar in Austin. He said that the Euless Tree Board is lucky because they receive support from the City Council and City staff. Ron explained several beautification projects that other cities are conducting including a Christmas tree disposal project. He further mentioned several things that other cities are doing through ordinances. • Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes May 01, 1989 Page 3 NEW BUSINESS I. INPUT FROM DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY SERVICES Mr. Jay Heilman thanked Mr. Shackelford for all of his efforts in getting the ball field lights up. He also commended Rick and Julia on all of their efforts. Jay reported on the tree seminar he and Ron Henson attended in Austin. He said that there were two gentlemen from Austin. One of them made an excellent presentation and would be willing to come visit and make a presentation. Mr. Marland Ernest suggested that a joint meeting be planned with the Park and Recreation Board, BEE Committee and the gentleman from Austin. II. RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported attendance for the month of April was: Gym 5,145, Ruth Millican 658, and Simmons 549 for a total of 6,352. The attendance for April 1988 was: Gym 3,231, Ruth Millican 542, and Simmons 365 for a total of 4,138. Building usage in addition to structured classes was: Bear Creek Pavilion 6, Gazebo at J. A. Carr Park 4, Simmons 13, Ruth Millican 9. The seniors had a busy month. Mary Lib and Ray Saleh cooked and served a spaghetti dinner at the Spice of Life Kitchen Band's 2nd Anniversary Celebration. The band also had their Battle of the Bands with the Haltom City Ding-a-lings. Bonnie O'Brien and Leon Hogg helped Mary Lib and Ray serve dinner. On April 27 the seniors went out to lunch at Furr's. The Kitchen Band played at two elementary schools and one nursing home and at the How-To-Grow Lawn and Garden Show. Andy Tarkington has started with the Recreation Department as Athletic Coordinator. Spring and summer softball leagues have started. Three regionals, Men's Church Major, Women's B and Women's Church, are planned for July 8. July 22 Women's Major and Women's A regionals are scheduled. A state tournament with Co-Rec Major is planned for August 26 & 27. Andy is also starting a NCAA sanctioned Women's Basketball League. The Baloney League will make. It will cost $60.00 per team. Wilshire and South Euless pools will open May 27 and close Labor Day weekend. A big promotion with Gus & Goldie is planned. Swim lessons should begin June 12. Baseball Bucks are ready. Leisure Times Magazine should be in the homes by May 26 with a new session beginning June 12. Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes May 01, 1989 Page 4 Julia commended the Park & Recreation Staff members for their work at the Trash Off, the Ultra Golf Tournament, and the How-To-Grow Lawn and Garden Show. Attendance at the How-To-Grow Lawn and Garden Show was estimated at 2,000. Mr. David Pryseski reported on preparations for the Lion's Pride 10k. III. PARK DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Rick Herold reported that Dale Groom gave a nice comment for Euless and the How-To-Grow Lawn and Garden Show on the air the day after the show. He reminded the Board that Euless will be presenting at the National Recreation and Park Association Convention in San Antonio. Videotape from the Lawn and Garden show will be presented. Rick commended his staff for all of their hard work in getting the ball fields ready for opening night, for their help with the Lawn and Garden Show and for finishing the job even under unsurmountable odds. He said that the Parks Department is a talented group of people. He also stated that his Volunteer of the Month award belongs to all of the staff. Rick thanked the other city departments for their cooperation and work especially Lynn Shackelford and Reggie Cast. Mr. Leon Hogg reported that three board members played in the Ultra Golf Tournament. He said that tapes from the Lawn and Garden Show will be put in the library for people to check out. Mrs. Julia Wakeley thanked Reggie Cast and Linda Lux for always helping with special events. IV. BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT None. V. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS None. VI. INPUT FROM VISITORS Mr. Bill Kirkley thanked Rick for the amazing work on field #2. Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes . May 01, 1989 Page 5 Mr. Marland Ernest stated that it was time to rotate park assignments and new assignments were made: Bonnie O'Brien - McCormick Park and Villages of Bear Creek; Jerry Robinson - Midway Park and Blessing Branch; Richard McNeese - Westpark and Wilshire; Mary Lib Saleh - South Euless and Euless Jr. High; Ron Henson - Community Building, Ruth Millican Center and Special Events; Marland Ernest - J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park and Oakwood Terrace; Helen Lightbody - Bear Creek and Lakewood; Leon Hogg - Van Reit and Del Norte.
