HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-03-06 REGULAR MEETNG PARK AND RECREATION BOARD MARCH 06, 1989 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:05 P.M. , Monday, March 06, 1989, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Ernest. Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh, Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien (alternate), Messrs. Ron Henson, Leon Hogg and Jerry Robinson (alternate). Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick Herold, Park Director; Jay Heilman, Director of Community Services; and Ann Hajek, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh. VISITORS Visitors attending the meeting were Messrs. Sonny Gonzalez, Bill Kirkley, Marty Wiltshire, Steve Wiltshire, Jerry Massey and Ms. Janna Jeffcoat. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated February 06, 1989 were approved as written. OLD BUSINESS BOARD MEMBERS REPORTS Mr. Ron Henson reported that he had driven by Wilshire Park at night. The tennis court lights were on and everything was in proper shape. He noted that during the warm spell there was quite a bit of activity at the park. Lakewood playground equipment has been receiving a lot of use. Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh reported that the new playground equipment at J. A. Carr Park is very good looking as are the new benches. Mrs. Saleh also reported that the Gold Medal Award criteria is in. We should just have to update our entry from last year. The Special Events for March are the Little Leprechauns Shin-Dig on the 17th and the Easter Egg Hunt on the 22nd. Mary Lib will be the sponsor attending the Little Leprechauns Shin-Dig and will also be the sponsor attending the Easter Egg Hunt along with Mr. Richard McNeese. Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien had no report as she has been out of town. Park and Recreation Board meeting Minutes March 06, 1989 Page 2 Mr. Jerry Robinson reported that Bear Creek Park looks good. He also commented on the new play ground equipment at Lakewood. Marland Ernest asked if we have limited usage of the field at Lakewood. Rick Herold replied that we have the triangle on the hill. Mr. Leon Hogg reported that Highway 10 had 48 volunteer hours, BEE Committee had 120 hours, and the Little Ladies Tea Party had 3 volunteer hours for a total of 515 hours thus far this year. This amounts to a savings (at $5.00 per hour) of $2,575.00. Mr. Marland Ernest reported that Van Reit Park has been extremely busy on Saturday. The Winter Rye looks good. Overall the park is in excellent shape. Marland also reported that Del Norte Park has not had much activity. Helen Lightbody stated that she is looking forward to utilizing the park grant. TREE BOARD REPORT None. NEW BUSINESS I. INPUT FROM DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY SERVICES Mr. Jay Heilman reported that the Recreation Center is not as far behind schedule as originally thought. It is currently 45 - 60 days from opening. The pool at Midway Park will not be open this year. Mr. Heilman said that he is interested in sending someone to a Tree Board meeting in mid-April. A & M has set the meeting up and Jay said he has responded to them that he will send someone. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the old iron bridge currently located at South Euless park. Jay stated that he would like to have a video made of the bridge to show in local Junior High Schools this fall. Plans are also being made to apply for a state historical marker for the bridge. II. RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mrs. Julia Wakeley thanked Helen Lightbody for making the cupcakes for the Little Ladies Tea Party. Attendance for the month of February was: Gym 3,752, Ruth Millican Center 925 and Simmons Center 568 for a total of 5,245. The attendance for February 1988 was: Gym 3,815, Ruth Millican Center 704 and Simmons Center 460. Park and Recreation Board meeting Minutes March 06, 1989 Page 3 So far this year 20 senior citizens have used the free tax service being offered. The seniors enjoyed a Valentine's Day party on February 9 complete with chili dogs. They are planning an Easter Party for March 23 which will include a hat contest. The Spice Of Life Kitchen Band is on tour again. They will be performing at several local schools and will be involved in a Battle Of The Bands with The Ding-a-lings from Haltom City. Signups for summer league softball have begun. Flag Football season will end with a tournament on March 24. Basketball will also be ending soon. Upcoming events are The Ultra Golf Tournament, the Lawn & Garden Show and the Great Euless Trash Off. The recreation department will once again provide the refreshments after the Trash Off. III. PARK DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Rick Herold introduced three of the Park Department employees: Mr. Jerry Massey, Mr. Marty Wiltshire and Mr. Steve Wiltshire. He stated that between them these three men do about 80 - 85% of the mowing. Jerry Massey leads the mowing crew. He has been with the city for 8 years and has an almost perfect attendance record. He is active in his church. Marty Wiltshire has been with the city 15 years. He is a light equipment operator. He is responsible for mowing all of the right-of-ways. Steve Wiltshire always keeps his equipment in excellent shape. He works a lot of our special events and other projects. The Lakewood Tot Lot at Lakewood Park has been installed. A pole was broken but has been replaced. White sand has been placed at the park also. A chemical spraying program was initiated at City Hall, Bear Creek Park and Midway Park. This should kill the winter weeds. Soccer has started at Van Reit Park. TRAPS will be holding their annual convention in Arlington this year. Mr. Herold and Mrs. Wakeley plan to attend on March 8 and 9. Rick thanked Mary Lib for all of her help on the How to Grow Lawn and Garden Show which will be held on April 29. IV. BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT BEE has been meeting regularly. They are concentrating on recycling this year. The recycling center that will be located in Euless will accept clear glass, colored glass, newspaper, and aluminum. Park and Recreation Board meeting Minutes March 06, 1989 Page 4 V. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS None. VI. INPUT FROM VISITORS Mr. Sonny Gonzalez of the Euless Athletic Association suggested that picking up material at residents homes to be recycled should be looked into. He also thanked Julia and Rick for providing meeting places for the EAA. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned at 8:00 P.
